A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians

I would like to welcome both you and your son to our De La Salle Catholic College Caringbah community. I hope your association with the College is both a positive and rewarding one.

The first week of a school year is one filled with great anticipation but it can be a time of anxiety for parents and students, unsure of what the year will bring. The first school week of 2019 will be even more challenging for your sons as they grapple with the significant transition from primary to secondary education. I wish to assure you that your son will be well cared for and that every effort will be made to ensure the transition to De La Salle Caringbah is smooth and trouble-free.

To assist in this process, the second Parent and Student Information Evening will be held on the first day of Term 1 (Wednesday 30 January 2019) at 6.30pm.

All boys in Year 7 will be participating in a camp during the year. The camp will be held 11-13 March 2019. This is a compulsory event for all students. This experience is an essential part of their curriculum and provides a valuable opportunity for students to develop further in confidence and make new friends. Further details will be provided as the camp approaches.

This is an exciting time for you and your son. Be assured that he is in safe hands and that he will be well cared for. De La Salle Catholic College Caringbah is a special place with a vibrant and positive spirit. We look forward to sharing this with you and your son in the years ahead, and indeed, for him to contribute to the consolidation and strengthening of our culture. Please do not hesitate to make contact should we be able to assist you with any enquiries.

Yours sincerely

Mr Peter BuxtonPRINCIPAL

A Message to Year 7 2019 students from the College Captain

Hi boys

I would like to welcome you, the future Year 7’s, into the De La Salle community. Year 7 was definitely one of my most memorable and enjoyable experiences. Throughout your time here you will meet new people who will end up being some of your lifelong friends. From one student to another, here are my tips to you to help make your transition into high school easier.

- Give 100% in everything you do, as this is the De La way and you will grow from it.- The most rewarding experiences will come from when you share your skills to make the College a better place- Be yourself when you meet new people as they will get to know you for who you are.- Build strong relationships with your teachers, as it is always good to have someone to turn too. The teachers are really genuine people and easy to get along with, so this shouldn’t be much of a problem.- Use your talents, whether it be sport, music or academic.- Don’t be afraid to speak out and ask questions.- And most of all, enjoy yourself! These will be some of the best years of your life.

I wish you the best of luck for the future and don’t be afraid to dream of great things.

College WebsiteThe College website has two pages dedicated to streamlining communication with parents and guardians. The LETTERS & FORMS page lists all relevant information which has been sent home. The EVENTS page provides families with links to College events. The pages can be accessed via the main MENU bar on the website under the sub category NEWS & EVENTS.

Trybooking.com.auAll College events which require an RSVP from parents will be placed on trybooking.com.au.

Sport Students will select their Friday sport preferences in the first week of Term 1 2019. In addition to the weekly Friday sports calendar, students can also pursue their own individual sports or team sport abilities through membership with the Southern Sydney Combined Catholic Colleges Association (SSCCCA) and the Shire Combined Catholic Colleges Association (SCCCA). Involvement in the SSCCCA is the school’s sports pathway towards NSWCCC, NSW All Schools and National Representation. Friday representative sports include cricket, Oztag, volleyball, softball, waterpolo, AFL, rugby league, soccer, hockey, netball and basketball. School based sports include golf, skating, surfing, bowling, Flip Out, weights and indoor sports.

Extra Curricular ActivitiesThe College provides an extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities for students. The College’s music department offers the opportunity for boys to join the College band. The College also competes in a variety of competitions such as debating and after school Art Club. Many students also participate in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. We strongly encourage your son to be an active member of the College community and participate in as many opportunities as he can during his time here.

Transport SCHOOL STUDENT TRANSPORT SCHEME & SCHOOL BUS SERVICES Secondary School students are eligible for subsidised transport if they live more than 2.0km (radial distance) from the College, measured on a radius from the centre of the school site, or 2.9km or more by the most direct practicable walking route to the nearest point of physical entry to the school. We encourage parents to refrain as much as possible from driving your son to school.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails. Applications forms for Opal Cards can only be submitted via the online application procedure. Information and a link to the online application can be found at www.transportnsw.info/school-students. Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018.

Year 7 students will receive their Opal cards by mail to their home address before the commencement of Term 1 2019. However, should your son not receive his card in time, do not worry as there is a grace period for the first few weeks of school to allow for all cards to be distributed. During this grace period, students are able to travel on a bus or train without an Opal card.
