    The Learning, Innovation and Knowledge (LInK) Centre is a university designated research centre that engages incross-disciplinary research projects which focus on creating learning, innovation and knowledge in the domainsof knowledge intensive rms, health services management, and technology.

    The Centre for Research on Student-Learning and Teaching (CReST) is a research cluster which aims to provide acohesive framework for high quality, leading-edge research on student learning and teaching.     High-Tech and Flexible Learning EnvironmentStudents at DCUBS enjoy excellent teaching and learning facilities. Students have 24-hour online access tomaterials, project details and submission requirements via moodle, our online learning platform which offersaccess to an e-library and allows students to study from home. The Business School building is wireless enabled.In addition, there are three open access PC labs and a dedicated postgraduate PC lab. Classrooms are tted withstate-of-the-art audio-visual equipment.

    Our part-time programmes have been developed for experienced working professionals and are deliveredin a manner designed to t in with their work and personal commitments. For example, our part-time M.B.A.students can choose between attending one afternoon per week or block sessions of three days per month.

    The Learning PartnershipDCU Business School has developed a reputation for lecturer and student interacting as equals in a learningpartnership. As part of the adult learning experience experiential learning techniques, including businesssimulations, case studies, seminars, problem-based learning, problem-solving and team building exercises areused to apply knowledge. Assessments tend to be less exam-oriented and focus more on work related assignments.We endeavour to provide our students not just with knowledge but also with a specic set of managementcompetencies.

    Global OutlookFrom the outset, DCU Business School has recognised theimportance of taking a global view on business. DCUBS is activelyinvolved in a wide array of international research projects, studentand lecturer exchanges, and other international ventures, whichare central to our existence. In addition, all of our programmeshave a strong international focus.

    Highly regarded internationally, DCU Business School is amember of the International Partnership of Business Schools(IPBS). The Dean of DCUBS is President of IPBS. Through this

    partnership the M.Sc. in International Management was madepossible and we currently have students enrolled on this programme from: USA, Mexico, India, China, Nigeria anda number of European countries including France, the Netherlands and Germany. Potential study options involvespending the rst semester in the USA, Mexico or France and the second semester in Ireland (DCU), Germany or Italy.

    International AlliancesForming international alliances is a key objective in DCUs overall strategic plan. DCU has formed recent strategicpartnership links with Arizona State University and Chinas Northeastern University and Capital University ofEconomics Beijing. DCU Business School faculty have formed research links with a number of institutions in theirscholarly work through group and individual academic networks. The Learning, Innovation and Knowledge ResearchCentre (LInK) is indicative of this. Within the Centre collaborative research is on-going with Arizona State University(USA), De Montfort University (UK) and Kingston University (UK).

    Professional Diploma in Accounting (PAC Code: DC500)1 Year Full-Time Programme

    Programme OverviewThe Professional Diploma in Accounting (PDA) isdesigned to fast-track graduates who wish to pursuecareers in accountancy or taxation, but whose primaryqualications are in areas other than accounting. Inthis sense, it is what we call a conversion programme.

    Accredited in 982, the PDA is the longest establishedprogramme of its kind in the Republic of Ireland andattracts high-quality graduates from a wide range ofdisciplines including arts, engineering, law, education,

    science and business. It provides students with anexcellent foundation in accounting and its relateddisciplines, bringing them to a high level of competencesuch that they are excellently prepared to commencethe advanced examinations of professional accountancyand taxation bodies.

    Entry RequirementsThe minimum entry requirement is a second classhonours degree in a discipline other than accounting(for those who have studied in any country) oraccounting (for those who have studied outside

    Ireland and the U.K.).

    Due to the regulatory nature of accounting, holdersof degrees awarded by institutions overseas are noteligible for direct entry to Masters degrees in accountingin Ireland. Hence, holders of such degrees are eligibleto apply for entry to the Professional Diploma inAccounting and, on successful completion of theprogramme, to DCUs M.B.S. in Accounting.

    When demand from qualied applicants exceedsavailable places, applicants are ranked for admissionpurposes on the basis of prior academic performance.

    Aims and ObjectivesThe key objectives of the PDA are two-fold. Firstly, theprogramme aims to develop students understandingof the conceptual underpinnings and practice ofaccounting. Secondly, it strives to enhance studentsproblem-solving, analytical, critical thinking andindependent learning skills so that they are equippedappropriately for challenging careers in dynamicprofessional and business environments.

    Programme Structure and ContentThe Professional Diploma in Accounting lasts for oneacademic year (September to May). It operates on asemester basis with a mix of semester- and year-longmodules. Some modules are assessed at the end ofthe rst semester and others at the end of the secondsemester.

    The modules on the PDA cover:

    n Financial Accounting

    n Taxation

    n Financial Management

    n Management Accounting

    n Law

    The programme commences with an introductoryaccounting course, which takes place one week beforethe standard University commencement date.

    Additional Programme FeatureFGS, Chartered Accountants, award a prize to thestudent who achieves rst place overall on theprogramme. The Irish Taxation Institute awards aprize to the student who achieves rst place in thetaxation module.

    Career ProspectsPDA graduates typically proceed to qualify as

    professional accountants and/or taxation specialistsand pursue careers in accountancy rms, nancialinstitutions, and manufacturing and service companiesin Ireland and abroad.

    The PDA is a great programme and it is ideal for graduates who wish to pursue careers in accounting. I really appreciated the

    Graduates are exempt, in full, from the CAPexaminations of Chartered Accountants Ireland.Exemptions are also available from CIMA, ACCA,ICPAI and The Irish Taxation Institute. However, itshould be noted that professional bodies reviewthe exemptions available to programmes offeredby all universities on an annual basis. PDA graduates,who achieve a minimum overall grade of a credit,are eligible to apply for a place on the M.B.S. inAccounting programme offered at DCU Business

    School.

    Programme OverviewThe M.B.S. in Accounting is the leading programme ofits kind in Ireland, an innovative partnership of learningwhich is informed and shaped by the needs of theaccounting professional of tomorrow. The programmeencourages critical and creative thinking, teamworkand communication, and develops a diverse range ofprofessional attributes which equip graduates to excelin the accounting profession and to adopt leadershippositions in their professional lives.

    The M.B.S. in Accounting is designed to meet theneeds of honours graduates who have taken majoraccounting specialisms in their undergraduate studies.It allows such candidates to combine study for aMasters degree with study for professional examinationsin an educationally effective way. The programme alsoprovides the opportunity for further career progressionto graduates of DCUs Professional Diploma inAccounting.

    Entry RequirementsThe minimum entry requirements are one of the

    following:

    n An honours degree in accounting

    n An honours degree with a signicant specialismin accounting

    n An honours award in the Universitys ProfessionalDiploma in Accounting.

    Applicants must have completed an honours degreeprogramme which has exempted them from theInstitute of Chartered Accountants in Irelands (ICAI)CAP examinations. Applications for exemption shouldbe directed to the ICAI. Details are available on the

    The course provided me with a superb training for my career in accounting and was a particularly good platform for the FAE.

    Although I found the course material very challenging, the lecturers were excellent and very supportive. The group assignments

    heightened morale among course participants and enhanced my personal and professional development.

    Programme OverviewThe nancial worlds demand for innovation has alwaysbeen intense. Today, as the nancial markets becomeincreasingly complex, the need to understand markets,systems and nancial instruments has never been greater.

    The M.Sc. in Finance and Capital Markets programmebuilds on the success that DCU Business School hasenjoyed in relation to the post-experience M.Sc. inInvestment and Treasury, which, since its inceptionin 990, has established a strong reputation as the

    leading graduate nance programme in Ireland.Now in its fourth year, this one-year full-time programmeis designed specically for graduates who have justcompleted their undergraduate studies and want toundertake a full-time taught postgraduate programmein nance.

    Students on the M.Sc. in Finance and Capital Marketswill obtain excellent specialist training in treasuryand investment activities in nancial markets andinstitutions. The programme emphasises technicalskills and rigour, and students will learn the latestquantitative and econometrics skills that are

    increasingly important in nancial services.

    Entry RequirementsThe minimum entry requirement for the programmeis any one of the following:

    n An honours degree in a business-related subject

    n Expectation of graduating with an honours degreein a business-related subject in the year of entry

    n An honours degree in a subject other than businesswhich has a high technical content, such asmathematics, statistics or engineering.

    As the M.Sc. in Finance and Capital Markets emphasisestechnical skills and rigour, students should have shownaptitude in technical subjects in their undergraduatedegree.

    Aims and ObjectivesThe principle aim of the programme is:

    n To develop students understanding of theconceptual framework underlying disciplinesrelevant to treasury management and nancialmarkets; relevant technical and quantitativetechniques; and methods of analysis used to

    evaluate nancial issues.

    Objectives of the programme are:

    n To develop students knowledge of the informationsources and analytical tools pertinent to effectivetreasury management in nancial markets

    n To provide students with up-to-date knowledge andunderstanding of nancial markets and the treasuryand investment activities within these markets

    n To develop analytical and quantitative skills innancial problem-solving. Also, to hone studentstransferable skills in reasoning, report writing,

    Aims and ObjectivesThe aim of this programme is to equip you with theknowledge, competencies and expertise to function asa successful, accountable and global marketing manager.The course also puts strong emphasis on your personal

    Programme StructureThe programme is delivered on a modular basis over twosemesters. It contains eight core compulsory modules.Within most core modules there is a strong focus onstrategic and analytic approaches to marketing. Youwill also be able to select a number of specialist modulesfrom a wide range of optional subjects. These are designedto give you exibility and allow you to tailor your studiesto your future career plans and academic strengths.

    Following completion of the taught element of theprogramme students work either on a major grouppracticum or an individual dissertation. The grouppracticum entails working with a client organisationto solve a real-world problem or to exploit a real-worldopportunity. This may involve identifying the commercialopportunity, researching the market, or developing amarketing campaign.

    During the course you will be exposed to a variety of

    teaching and learning methods that may include: casestudies, industry consulting projects, presentations andgroup project work. Students on this programme havealso beneted from meeting with and hearing visitingmarketing faculty from top-tier US and UK businessschools such as Harvard, Oxford, York, Northwestern,and George Washington.     Programme OverviewJointly offered by DCU Business School and DCUSchool of Computing, the M.Sc. in Electronic Commercefeatures a common core curriculum with two distinctstreams Business and Technical.     Putting Knowledge into PracticeThroughout the programme, students will be giventhe opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-worldprojects. This may involve running an online marketingcampaign, researching a commercial opportunityor international market entry strategy, compiling abusiness plan or applying some other business processor toolset. As well as undertaking these projects forindividual modules, students have the opportunityof working together in a group to complete a majorpractical project which is submitted and presented in

    August. In addition to business research, this typicallyentails the prototyping of an e-commerce system ordevelopment of a software application. Projects aresourced from DCUs research centres, corporate clients,or may be based on students own insights and ideas.

    Fees ReductionThis programme is supported by the HEA under theGraduate Skills Conversion Programme, resulting in areduced fee for most European Union students. This issubject to annual review but in 2009/200 the fees payableper annum by most EU students were reduced to2,000.

    Career ProspectsGraduates have pursued a variety of careers in theinformation economy as managers, entrepreneurs,business analysts, management consultants, e-marketingprofessionals and e-business technologists.     Programme OverviewThe M.B.S. in Human Resource Managementprogramme has been designed to equip graduateswith the knowledge, skills and abilities required towork in the fast changing world of human resourcemanagement (including areas such as training anddevelopment, employee relations and consultancy)or in the area of international business where thereare responsibilities for people management.

    The innovative and distinguishing features of this

    Programme Structure and ContentThe programme begins with an intensive two-dayTeam Building Event. Towards the end ofthe rst year students begin an extensive exercise inpersonal leadership development that continues overthe second year of the programme. This module isfacilitated and delivered with faculty colleagues in our

    partner institution, Northeastern University, Boston.

    The second year adopts a thematic, integrated approach,which focuses on the key strategic drivers of sustainablegrowth: operational excellence, entrepreneurship andinnovation, customer relationship management, andstrategic information systems. At this stage studentshave the option of an International Week to Boston,which includes a class in leadership that is deliveredby an adjunct faculty member of The Kennedy Schoolof Government at Harvard. It also involves visits toUS-based companies with each visit being linked toone of our MBA modules.

    The nal semester completes the programme, with thecapstone theme of the DCU MBA: Strategy, Leadership,and Renewal. This theme focuses on the unique roles,tasks and responsibilities of corporate leadership andgovernance in the overall strategic development,performance and renewal of the enterprise.

    The DCU MBA is inculcated by a spirit of inquiry, grouplearning, and active engagement by all MBA participants.We seek to maximise peer-to-peer learning. To achievethis learning, we limit classes to 25 students.

    The programme is delivered in two formats. Studentsmay attend the programme on a weekly basis (one dayper week) when classes are typically delivered from2.00pm to 9.5pm. Alternatively, students may attendthe programme on a block release basis when classesare delivered over three (8 hour) days per month(typically Thursday, Friday and Saturday).     Programme OverviewThis is a part-time programme aimed at people workingin nancial services who wish to deepen their knowledgeof nancial markets and products.
