September 11-18 • DC Shorts FIlm Festival 2008 3
Thank you for supporting the 2008 DC Shorts Film Festival, now celebrating our fifth incredible year. This year, we
are pleased to showcase 103 films and 6 screenplays from 8 different countries. DC Shorts’ amazing growth and
success have earned us the reputation as “one of the most influential film festivals” from Moviemaker Magazine!
Over 650 films and screenplays were submitted to the festival this year. The judging process began all the way back in May with teams
of judges rating each film’s style, content, originality, and technical merits. Recommendations were then sent on to a team of executive
judges, who viewed the 200 top scoring films to create the final cut. The final decisions were difficult and often heavily debated — all so
DC Shorts can present the very best films to you!
DC Shorts has always been proud to feature truly independent films and filmmakers. In this age of digital video and home computers
— and most recently the addition of high-definition technology — the ability to create films has become accessible to everyone. Our
festival proves that great film is no longer just from Hollywood, it’s from everyone and everywhere.
So butter up that popcorn, get nice and comfy and enjoy the movies! Remember not to rush out of the theater after the screening —
many showcases have a Q & A session with the filmmakers, who are visiting DC from around the globe.
Vote for Films!
DC Shorts has always presented
awards. This year, we have expanded
our competitions to offer even
more awards with incredible prizes
of cash and products. You help to
determine the Audience Awards by voting with
your phone! After each screening, you place your
vote using the first phone-based ballot system used
by a film festival. It is free, easy -- and explained on
page 5.
This year, we are offering awards in the following
categories:
· Filmmaker’s Favorite
. Best Original Song (PReSenTeD By gIBSOn)
. Best Cinematography (PReSenTeD By FujIFIlM)
. Best HD Film (PReSenTeD By WASHIngTOn CITy PAPeR)
· Festival Director’s Favorite
· Best Female Director
· Best local Film
. Best First-Time Director
. Diversity Award (PReSenTeD By veRIzOn)
. Audience Awards (YOU DECIDE)
Vote for a Script!
We are very proud to present our second
Screenplay Competition. Watch six scripts
read live by actors and the screenwriter —
we have dramas, comedies and more! At the
end of the show, vote for your favorite script.
The winner will receive $1000, plus another $1,000
when the film is completed. Plus, you can see the
final movie next year at DC Shorts 2009! This is a
unique competition — no one else in the country
presents scripts in this way. Be an important part in
the production of a film with a single vote!
Vote for Music!
Music is as important to a film as great writing
or beautiful camera work. That is why we are
celebrating the music of film through two special
contests. With OurStage.com, we held two online
competitions in August — one to determine the
Best Original Song from one of the films, and one to
choose three bands which will entertain you at the
various parties and events all weekend long!

Showcase 8 is presented by the Downtown BID. The Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) is a tax-funded nonprofit that works to revitalize the city’s urban core. The District covers a 138-block neighborhood near the u.S. Capitol to the White House where property owners tax themselves to make their community cleaner, safer and more vibrant. The tax is used by the BID to purchase services and capital improvements that supplement those provided by the city.

Making the Extremely Low Budget Feature @ 1:00pm
In this workshop Kelley will walk through the entire process from scripting
through post production. How to get the most for very limited resources, asking
the right questions to get free stuff, and working in an atmosphere where people
share your vision and put in very long hours for no money, and enjoy it!
Guerilla Marketing and Self Distribution of Your Film @ 3:00pm
Independent filmmaking is alive and well, it’s independent distribution that is
dead. Kelley walks though different ways to get an audience to turn out for your
screenings.
