Day of Pink

King George School will be celebrating Day of Pink on Thursday, April 12th – be sure to wear PINK! Day of Pink is a day where the students will be given the opportunity to talk about bullying and ways we can prevent bullying to help create a safe and respectful community. The Day of Pink began after 2 high school students in Nova Scotia took a stand against bully-ing in their school. These students asked all their peers to wear pink to school after they heard a male classmate had been bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Now it’s our turn to take a stand together against bullying – wear your Pink shirt on April 12th! We will be doing a variety of activities throughout the day to continue to bring this social issue to the forefront including: A School Wide Assembly Pink lemonade sale - proceeds to be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Students will be facilitating classrooms presentations on bullying Face painting

This month, we received a request from the Premier of

Manitoba to be a part of his commemorative bike ride that

will take place in June. Premier Pallister will be riding from

the location of the original St. Peter’s Reserve to the current

Peguis First Nation to mark the 200th anniversary of the

Selkirk Treaty. This Treaty was the legacy of an extraordinary

friendship between Lord Selkirk and Chief Peguis, and laid the

foundation for what would later become Manitoba. When he

arrives at Peguis First Nation, he plans to deliver letters from

Manitobans expressing their appreciation to the descendants

of Chief Peguis for the vital role they played in the formation

of our province. Students in our middle years wrote letters to

Peguis First Nation, which Premier Pallister will deliver when

he reaches his destination on June 18., 2017.

King George School 535 Park Street Brandon, Manitoba R7A 6M6 March 15, 2017 Premier Peguis Tour c/o Manitoba Legislative Building 204 - 450 Broadway Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C OV8 Dear Peguis First Nation, My name is Kathryn Nichol and Iam a student at King George School. I am writing this letter to thank Chief Peguis and all his descendants for helping the Selkirk Settlers 200 years ago. After receiving an email from our Superintendent about the com-memorative bike trip, we began learning about Chief Peguis and his generous contributions. Without Chief Peguis' help the Selkirk Settlers wouldn't have survived. Instead of leaving them to starve, Peguis taught the settlers how to hunt and survive in Manitoba. The commemorative bike trip undertaken by our Premier has al-lowed us to learn about the early history of our area and the gener-ous contributions of Chief Peguis. I hope that this gesture will help recognize our strong partnership. Sincerely, Kathryn Nichol

Cultural Days What an event!

King George School in Brandon, Manitoba is a very diverse and multicultural center of learning. We are very proud of our student’s heritages and each year we celebrate our various cultures during a week we call Cultural Days. We ran a project during the months preceding Cultural Days in March. This year, each class was assigned 14 different flags from around the world to research, draw and colour. We used these flags as a part of our decorations during cultural day and evening. Our celebration began on March 21st with a focus on the fine arts. Our elementary students made ornamental Chinese fans. They practiced writing in Chinese as part of their project. Words including love, happiness and respect were in the messages reflected in their art work. The middle years students created masks to be displayed throughout the week. Both the early and middle years students did an amazing job with their art and we had many compliments from the guests who attended our event. On March 22nd, we celebrated Cultural Day. Our school had eight different theme rooms set up. We had a wide variety of activities for our students to engage in. This year we featured Cuban salsa dancing, Tai Chi, Hindi writing, Scottish bagpipes, music of the Metis, indigenous storytell-ing, an art walk, a young man from the Philippines who shared songs while playing the guitar and a food room where students could sample foods from the indigenous and Mexican cultures. Our week concluded on March 23rd with Cultural Evening. This performance provided the opportunity for friends, family and guests to come to our gymnasium and watch over two dozen King George students, as well as some guest performers to showcase singing, dancing and martial arts. The students were very proud to be a part of our Cultural Days and King George School is proud to continue to display the talents of our diverse student body.

Ms. Cullen and Ms. Holt have volunteered to coach badminton. Practices will be starting after spring break and will run Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. until the bell rings to start school. There will also be practices after school from 3:30—4:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays with Ms. Holt. The first practice will be April 4

Basketball News

Our year-end basketball jamboree wrapped up the middle years basketball season on March 10th/11th. All three middle years basketball teams were committed throughout the season and have improved their skills as a result. Ms. Holt, Ms. Giannopolous, Mr. Nairn and Mr. Ketcheson volunteered their time to coach our students this year and it is greatly appreciated.

Lunch Program Reminder Students in grades 1 - 4 do NOT have access to microwaves in their classrooms for their safety. Please send food that does not require warming-up. We would recommend warming food at home and wrapping it in foil or putting it into a thermos so that it will still be warm at lunch time. Also, please be reminded that students need to bring their own cutlery. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Ms. Feasby’s Classroom Highlights

Our students made Dreamcatchers with Mrs. Fries as part of their social studies unit about the First People in Canada. Dreamcatchers are an ancient spiritual tool used to help assure good dreams to those that sleep under them. A dream catcher is usually located in a window or above your bed. As you sleep, all dreams have to pass through the dreamcatcher. Only good dreams can pass through the hole in the center while the bad dreams are caught in the webbing. The students really enjoyed making their dreamcatchers!

The students have been busy learning about communities including our community in Brandon. They explored various maps of Brandon, discussed important buildings and landmarks within our community and were inspired to create their own community using loose parts. They worked together to plan and design different parts of the community including a school, police station, fire department, grocery store, restaurant, houses, movie theatre and a park. We worked together to sketch and take pictures of the different parts and details of our community using iPads. Then, we used the pictures to create a video to share our learning and the community we created with others.

Math games are a favourite in our room! The students love to play different math games to practice and strengthen their math skills. We are working on our mental math skills by practicing our doubles (ex 4 + 4), 10 facts, 1 more/1 less and 2 more/2 less. We are also working on place value and how it helps us understand numbers. The students break numbers apart and look at how many groups of 10 there and how many ones. They then use base 10 blocks to build the number using the appropriate number of base ten and unit blocks.
