Title Alice’s Daughter — Healing Through Art: How survival and healing are possible

through art and connecting with our land’s ancient Aboriginal spirit. Description Aunty Rhonda speaks out against injustices against her people and Mother Earth.

As an Elder, Rhonda conducts cultural and art workshops at high schools, and has worked in prisons with young women around suicide prevention, helping them reconnect with their Aboriginality. As a representative of the Stolen Generations, Rhonda officiates at National Sorry Day events in Brisbane and Ipswich. Title Suicide Prevention and the Conversations We Need to Have Description

Suicide will be highlighted as a major issue amongst Aboriginal Torres Straight Islander peoples, demonstrated via researched data. The uncomfortableness and shame around this topic will be addressed. There will be discussion around the historical, cultural and social determinants of mental health and the importance of considering these in any potential solution. I will discuss my lived experience of my mother committing suicide when I was a child, and the resulting intergenerational impact. Title Elimination of Trachoma by 2020 “Clean Faces, Strong Eyes” Description Australia has committed to the elimination of trachoma, a preventable, blinding eye

infection by 2020. In order to achieve this aim there needs to be ongoing awareness of the importance of clean faces and good hygiene to prevent the spread of and reinfection from trachoma. Trachoma is still found in some remote Aboriginal communities in the tri-state border region of NT, SA and WA. Through the eyes of my mother ‘Stolen Generation’, my sister’s and my son’s generations I will tell the trachoma story, its implications on other health issues and how we can work towards elimination together.

Our workshop will showcase the STEM, Cultural Understanding & Aboriginal Communities’ Portal which has been collaboratively developed by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff of the University of South Australia. Title Tidda-Links’: Connecting local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women’s voices

to family and sexual violence service planning. Description

My Grandmother, Mother, Aunties, Sisters and Cousins fought hard against the ongoing injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Now, as a Principle Female Aboriginal Health Worker, I’ll workshop with you how Health services can be shaped to better attend to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander survivors of family and sexual violence. For three generations, women in my family have been survivors of this ongoing ‘cycle of violence’. We have stayed strong amidst the domestic/family and other types of violence and the sexual assault, we keep fighting. Hopefully the next generation can also say ‘Because of her, we can!’

Title Enhancing women’s health in remote communities by removing specific barriers and providing culturally-appropriate options

Description

Research indicates that females in some communities have challenges during menstruation with access to sanitary products (such as pads), facilities for waste disposal and washing, and insufficient information about bodily changes. NATSIWA, UQ and Women on Country are working to identify the barriers and needs, in order to provide suitable options. This workshop will discuss with Indigenous women barriers and solutions for girls and women regarding menstrual hygiene. We recognise that this is a delicate, personal women’s business topic that can be difficult to discuss. We hope to build long-term options to ensure women’s dignity every day of the month.

Song is central to the maintenance of language, ceremony and culture, it holds our traditional knowledge and it teaches us who we are and where we fit in our world.
