In his seven seasons as athletic director, NPHS athletes have won three team state titles and six individual state championships. In addition, he has led significant upgrades to several athletic facilities, including this summer’s Kelso Stadium renovation. Cooper has been honored as the IIAAA District 4 Athlet-ic Director of the Year in 2017.

Cooper is a 1979 graduate of NPHS, where he was a three-sport athlete. He went on to play baseball collegiately at Indiana Central (now the University of Indianapolis). He coached girls basketball at NPHS from 1988-2005, winning 228 games and four sectional titles. In 10 seasons as baseball coach from 2002-11, his teams went 242-56 and won five sectional titles. KELSO STADIUM

3

The Dragons’ home turf Is named for two New Palestine luminaries. Kelso Stadium was dedicated in honor of former NPHS principal Robert Kelso shortly after he passed away in 1983.

The playing field was named Shepler Field in 2003. Its namesake is Hall of Fame football coach Marvin Shepler. The team’s first varsity coach, Shepler led New Palestine to three sectional titles and the 1990 State Finals. Between 1986-92, the Dragons won 38 consecutive home games on what would become Shepler Field. Shepler coached the Dragons from 1968-2001 and taught at NPHS for 49 years, retiring in 2017.

The stadium has been the home of NPHS football since its inception as a varsity program in 1968. Kelso Stadium has been upgraded several times, with a new two-story press box and new bleachers in the 1990s, new goalposts added in 2015 and a scoreboard with video capabilities added prior to the 2016 season.

The stadium underwent its most significant facelift in 2018. An artificial playing surface replaced the old grass field, allowing Shepler Field to be used year-round by multiple sports and activities. In addition, a new concession building opened and two sections of bleachers were installed in the south end zone.

Entering 2018, the Dragons are 175-90-1 all-time at Kelso Stadium. The Drgons have two long winning streaks on the turf. They won 38 consecutive home games from Sept. 12, 1986-Oct. 2, 1992, and 21 consecutive games on the Kelso Stadium turf from Aug. 30, 2013 through Oct. 14, 2016. The stadium has been host to 18 conference champions, nine sectional champions, five regional titlists, two state runners-up and the 2014 state championship team. NP clinched two semistate titles at Kelso Stadium - a dramatic 30-28 victory over Columbus East in 2014 and a 56-6 win over Castle in 2015.

2018 SEASON NOTES

4

NEW TURFAfter 50 seasons of playing home games on natural grass,

the Dragons will begin playing on synthetic turf this fall. Instal-lation of the new FieldTurf surface began with excavation in May and was completed in time for the 2018 season. The new playing surface for Shepler Field is part of the most significant renovation of Kelso Stadium since 1998, which also includes new bleachers and a new, expanded concession/restroom build-ing, both behind the south end zone. The Dragons played 265 varsity games on Kelso Stadium’s grass field, winning 175 and tying one.

NEW FOESNew Palestine begins the season with two highly-anticipated

non-conference games. The Dragons open the 2018 campaign against Kokomo, which was last season’s Class 5A state run-ner-up. Week 2 sees a visit from Center Grove, the Dragons’ first-ever game against a member of the Metropolitan Interscho-lastic Conference and first against a Class 6A school. Center Grove is a two-time state champion and four-time state finalist in the state’s largest class.

CHASING 350New Palestine enters the season with 342 wins in its 50 years

of varsity football. Eight victories would give NP an even 350 in its history.

LOOKING FOR SIXThe Dragons have posted five consecutive undefeated

regular seasons and Hoosier Heritage Conference champion-ships. NP currently holds the state’s longest active regular-sea-son winning streak at 45 games, the seventh-longest in state history. The Dragons need one win to tie Brownstown Central (1998-2004) for sixth and four to tie Seeger (2000-05) for fifth. The Dragons’ 34 consecutive HHC victories are a conference record.

ALL-STATE TALENTSix players in the 2018 Dragon lineup have received All-

State honors in their careers. Senior OL Austin Keele was a consensus choice last season, receiving honors from both AP and IFCA. He helped lead a line that averaged 483 yards per game last season. He is a two-time IFCA All-State selection. Senior WR/DB Colby Jenkins is the seventh Dragon to reach 1,000 career receiving yards. Junior RB Luke Canfield ran for 1,764 yards and 29 TDs last seasoan. Junior S Maxen Hook led the Dragons with 69 tackles, three interceptions and six passes defended. All were named IFCA Junior All-State. Junior RB Charlie Spegal ran for 2,385 yards and 33 touchdowns for Delta before moving to New Palestine during the second semester. He was AP Class 4A All-State and IFCA Junior All-State in 2017. In addition, senior LB Luke Ely was named IFCA Junior All-State in 2016.

TROPHY TIMEThe Dragons have held the Hoosier Heritage Conference’s

Helmet trophy for 30 straight games since defeating Yorktown 35-14 to take possession on Sept. 27, 2013. The Helmet chang-es hands when the team in possession is defeated.

NP also holds the Boundary Rail Trophy, which goes annual-ly to the winner of the county rivalry between the Dragons and Mt. Vernon. The Dragons have won five consecutive games in the series, including a 47-3 victory last season. NP has won 12 of the 13 Boundary Rail meetings.

VETERAN EXPERIENCE The Dragons graduated only seven seniors last season, giv-

ing them a veteran, experienced group. NP returns nine of its 11 starters on offense and eight starters on defense. In addition, the team’s kicker, punter and return specialists all return.

Offense: The entire offensive line, the top receiver and both starting backs return from a squad that produced 483 yards per game last season. Senior QB Zach Neligh accounted for 2,991 yards of total offense and 35 touchdowns. WR Colby Jenkins is sixth on the NPHS all-time receiving list and tallied 655 receivng yards a year ago. Kade Large had 221 receiving yards. A line that features Jacob Brittsan, Noah Mack, Austin Keele, Alex Cotterman, Kyle King and Will Olive - all of whom started games last season - blocks for three 1,000-yard rushers. Neligh, Luke Canfield (1,764 yards) and Charlie Spegal (2,385 yards for Delta). A number of newcomers, including sophomore Blake Austin and junior Dawson Eastes, will mix in.

Defense: The Red Rage returns eight starters from a unit that surrendered 141 ypg last season, including All-State DB Maxen Hook (69 tackles, 3 INT), former All-State LB Luke Ely (63 tackles, 7.5 sacks) and HHC interception leader Ryker Large (6). LBs Kade Large (41 tackles) and C.J. Faubion, as well as DBs Jenkins and Brody Luker (3 INT) and DLs King (3.5 sacks) and Keele (35 tackles) also have siginficant experience. Expect Tyler Horsley, Jacob Hockett and Luke Canfield to make significant contributions.

Special teams: The Dragons return K Alex Kropp (55-60 PATs, 4-5 FG) and P Eric Roudebush (38.8) as well as several members of a dangerous return game.

HEAD COACH KYLE RALPH

6

Sixth-year NPHS head coach Kyle Ralph is the fifth head coach in the school’s history, the third to lead the team to an undefeated regular season, the second to lead the Dragons to the State Finals and the first to win a state championship.

He came to NPHS in 2013 armed with an attack-ing style on both sides of the ball, which continues in the team’s commit-ment to conditioning in the weight room during the offseason. It has led to five HHC titles, three sectionals, three re-gionals, a semistate and a state title in four seasons.

The Dragons have also had five un-beaten regular seasons and gained 6,000-plus yards of offense three times. Coach Ralph has been named IFCA Region Coach of the Year twice, and coached the IFCA South All-Stars in 2014.

His New Palestine teams have rewritten the record books, shattering state records for points and total offense in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The Dragons hold the top two scoring seasons in Indiana history – 854 points in 2015, 851 in 2014 – and the top total offense season, with 7,701 yards in 2015.

Coach Ralph is a 2002 graduate of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and a 2006 graduate of the Uni-versity of North Carolina. He was a two-time First Team All-ACC lineman at North Carolina, playing for head coach John Bunting. He was the 2005 ACC Coastal Division Offensive Lineman of the Year.

He has also participated in NFL training camps with the Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers. Prior to coming to New Palestine, Ralph was an assistant coach at St. Xavier, Oak Hills and Withrow High Schools in the Cincinnati area from 2007-12.

Coach Ralph also helps coach the Dragons’ track and field teams. In 2016, the Dragon boys track team finished sixth in the State Finals, with state champi-on Samuel Voelz and two state runner-up relays. He lives in New Palestine with his wife Ashley, a NPHS teacher and graduate, and their three children. Ralph teaches physical education at NPHS.

The Hoosier Heritage Conference has emerged as one of the premier conferences for mid-sized schools in Indiana, celebrating its 25th year with two team state championships, as the New Palestine softball and New Castle volleyball teams each took home IHSAA titles in 2017-18.

The HHC was founded in 1993-94 with competi-tion in 16 sports. A football championship was added the following season. The conference now sponsors championships in 19 sports, as well as three academic disciplines. New Palestine is the reigning All-Sports champion for both boys and girls sports.

The conference began with six charter members - Greenfield-Central, Hamilton Southeastern, Mt. Ver-non, New Palestine, Pendleton Heights and Rushville.

In 1996, Delta and Shelbyville joined to expand the league membership to eight teams. In 1998, Hamilton Southeastern left the league, but the league mem-bership returned to eight schools a year later when Yorktown entered the conference. In 2013, Rushville departed the conference. A year later, New Castle joined the league. 2018-19 HHC officersPresident: Keith Fessler, NP Pres-elect: Connie Rickert. DRAGONS VS. OPPONENTS

19

TRAVELING TROPHIESThe Dragons play for two traveling tro-

phies, the HHC Helmet and the Boundary Rail.

The Boundary Rail goes to the annual winner of the New Palestine-Mt. Vernon game. It is a piece of the interurban track that ran along U.S. 40, which is roughly the boundary between the two school districts. NP and MV have played annually since both began varsity football in 1968. Since the trophy was instituted in 2005, NP has won 13 of the 14 meetings. The winning school often paints the rail in its colors.

The Helmet is a challenge trophy the eight HHC schools play for. The winner holds the trophy until it is defeated by another conference school. Entering 2018, New Palestine has held the Helmet for a re-cord 32 consecutive games, since winning it Sept. 27, 2013 against Yorktown. In 2012, six different schools held the Helmet.
