Boasting lightweight builds for ages 2 to 15 years, we’ve taken time to develop this premium range to ensure it hits the ground rolling!

Starting with the new Academy balance bike, the ‘Wobble’ offers a perfect introduction into cycling without the headache of gears and pedals, allowing your child to focus solely on balance.Moving up through the ranks, each model has been designed individually to ensure each component, nut and bolt is perfectly matched to the bikes intended use and, user! Where suitable components weren’t available, we made our own! Exclusive power-optimised junior cranks grow with each wheel size as well as handlebars, stems, chain rings, gearing and brake levers built to make the riding experience on any Academy bike fun and, confidence inspiring! Yet another exclusive feature across the entire range is our new, one-bolt adjustable stem. Offering infinite height adjustment on the specially made shim, your child can easily find the perfect handlebar position and lock it in place by tightening just one bolt! This exclusive offering also gives a smooth rear edge to the handlebar stem, meaning less chance of knee vs stem arguments! With incremental gear ratios and, Shimano’s light action junior revoshifter on geared models, all these fantastic features are wrapped up around our super lightweight, triple butted alloy frame and chromo fork.

We’ve done our homework on this new premium range and any child will be sure to do the same for a chance to ride one!

For those hooked into the world of off-road riding the advent of larger wheel sizes is the hot topic.

The traditional MTB wheel has a diameter of 26 inches but in recent years 29 inch wheels have become more prevalent on top level bikes.A larger wheel decreases the angle of attack as it hits any given object on the trail. This gives improved roll-over across lumps, bumps, roots and rocks making riding through such conditions easier.You also get improved traction due to larger contact area between tyre and the ground but there are some negative points to consider.Firstly there is a weight penalty of typically around 10-12% for a 29 inch wheel and 5% for 27.5 inch and the bigger the wheel is, the more energy it takes to get it rolling.That said, once the wheel is turning a 29 inch or 27.5 inch wheel will carry its momentum better than a standard 26 inch wheel. This means you’ll roll through technical sections better than with a small wheel.

For 2014 we are bringing the benefits of the larger 29 inch wheel across more of our range starting with our XC21Disc and introducing the mid size 27.5 inch (also commonly known as 650B) to our 24 speed models upwards.Where wheel size options exist, to distinguish the difference we suffix our new 29 inch bikes with LW, which denotes a Large Wheel. Our 650B wheel bikes carry the suffix MW or Mid-size Wheel.

Ultimately, you’ll want to know which one is right for you. There is no hard or

fast rule and will come down to your riding style, personal preferences on the technicalities given and in some instances body geometry. We’d always recommend you discuss this with your local bike shop as they are there to give you one to one service, ensure your bike fits correctly and will leave them fully serviced and ready for action.

Many brands are finally turning their attention to the growing demand for women specific bikes. At Dawes this market is no revelation.

DAWessUppORtsCyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC) is a registered charity (1140017) providing a unique and highly effective way of helping kids with

cancer through activity and exercise

Cyclists Fighting Cancer give new bikes, tandems and specially adapted trikes to children and young people who have been affected by cancer throughout the UK. The effects of the disease and its treatments in children are numerous; amputations, balance issues, physical weakness, coordination difficulties, lack of self esteem are just a few of the most common side effects seen in many patients.

Exercise has been shown in numerous adult studies to be the single most effective way of improving both physical and mental wellness for people surviving cancer. CFC encourage cycling as the best form of exercise based rehabilitation especially for children because it provides all these benefits in a low impact, fun, sociable and exciting way.

Cancer also causes massive disruption in families, therefore CFC aims to give bikes to their siblings and in many cases their parents in order that they can take part in an activity as a family once again after what can be years of hospitalisation and upheaval.

CFC plan to supply another 300 awards this year which will take their total since they started in 2006 to over 1300 bikes. In addition CFC are funding a dedicated research study with the University of Leeds to clearly illustrate the relationship between physical and mental well being and physical activity in children surviving cancer.

Cyclists Fighting Cancer operate totally on the kind support of the public and cyclists doing bike rides around Britain and across the world. All monies donated make a huge difference to the total fundraising effort and ultimately to the number of children affected by cancer they support.

You’ll notice each bike in our catalogue shows which EN standard it meets and here’s a little more information on what each standard relates to. You can use this as a guide for each model’s intended use and its limitations.

BS EN14765; Bicycles for young children. (permissable total weight of rider + luggage + bicycle = 60kg) These bicycles are intended for use by children on roads, paths and cycle tracks that are in good condition. Paths and cycle tracks can be gravel or dirt roads with minor undulations.

BS EN14764; City and trekking bicycles. (permissable total weight of rider + luggage + bicycle = 135kg, Note 105kg for folding bicycles) These bicycles are intended for use on public roads, paths and cycle tracks that are in good condition. Paths and cycle tracks can be gravel or dirt roads with minor undulations and small potholes.

BS EN14766; Mountain bicycles. (permissable total weight of rider + luggage + bicycle = 135kg) These bicycles are intended for use off-road, on rough terrain such as coarse pebble tracks where tree roots and rocks are likely to be encountered.

BS EN14781; Road Racing Bicycles (permissable total weight of rider + luggage + bicycle = 135kg)These bicycles are intended for high speed amateur use on public roads but are not considered specialised racing bicycles for sanctioned competitive events. Whichever bike you choose please carry out the service and maintenance checks as advised within the user manual.
