The Shidler Group recognizes the growing demand for fast and reliable Internet service, which is why we partnered with Hawaii Dialogix Telecom (HDT) to provide a dedicated 10 mbps symmetrical circuit, complimentary to all Davies Pacific Center tenants. If you are currently receiving the building’s complimentary Internet service, please note that service with the original Cisco LRE modem terminated on Sunday, May 31, 2015. In order to continue service without interruption, or to begin taking advantage of the complimentary service, please contact HDT at 808-440-8700, or email customerservice@hawaiidt.com.

Another major change for retailers and the community takes effect July 1, 2015, as we gear up for an island-wide ban on plastic bags. It is a habit - we head to the grocery store, get everything we need, then put it in a plastic bag. It’s the same routine many of us have had for decades, but in about one month, that will change. No more plastic bags when you check out. Non-recyclable paper bags will also be banned. We will only be allowed to use paper bags and compostable bags, but not traditional plastic bags. It will be a little bit of a learning curve for most of us, but please be encouraged in knowing that the change will help decrease pollution and protect our environment. Honolulu is the last county in Hawaii to make the switch. Are you ready for the switch? Please see page 5 for details on the ban on plastic bags.

One of the newer members of the Davies Pacific Center family of ten-ants is Otto Cakes, a familiar name, especially if you’re a dessert lover. Located on the Queen Street side of the building on the ground floor, Otto Cakes features many of the popular cheesecake flavors and assorted brownies offered at its main Kaimuki store. The owner, Otto, makes more than 250 different varieties of cheese-cakes from scratch. With flavors such as Maple Bacon, Cookie Butter, Root Beer Float, Caramel Apple, Butterscotch, Cotton Candy, and Red Velvet, you may be surprised to learn that the overwhelming crowd favorite is the Plain cheesecake, which is by no means plain!

Here’s a short Q&A with the owner himself, Otto.

What made you decide to open your second location at Davies Pacific Center? When we were at our China-

town location, many of our customers walked over from the downtown office buildings. Opening a second location at Davies allowed us to continue to serve our loyal downtown custom-ers. So far, it’s been working out really well.

How’d you get started in the cheese-cake business? My mother loved cheesecake, so one day, I decided to make one for her as a gift, and it turned out great. Then, a couple of weeks later, I made one and took it to work. I got eight orders from co-workers that day. That was the start of it. And, I’ve been in business now for 25 years. In addition to our two locations, we provide cheese-cake to many of the restaurants around town.

What makes your cheesecake unique? I think it’s not so much that our cheesecake is unique, it’s that other people’s cheesecakes don’t taste like

cheesecake should. If you taste our cheesecake blindfolded, you’ll know its cheesecake. That’s the main dif-ference. And, of course, everything we make is from scratch and baked fresh daily.

With over 250 flavors of cheesecake, how do customers know what’s available on any given day? The best way to find out what we’re offering is by following us on Instagram. We’ll post the flavors we have that day and any specials we have going on as well. Or, just stop by our Kaimuki shop on 12th Avenue or our Davies Pacific Center shop, which is on the ground floor, next to Ahi Lovers on Queen Street.

This July, DeBartolo Development will celebrate its 1st anniversary as a tenant of Davies Pacific Center. The DeBartolo name is well-known among the real estate industry as well as the sporting world. Long-time San Francisco 49er fans may remember that Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. was the owner of the franchise during the Joe Montana and Jerry Rice era, when the team won five Super Bowl championships. Today, DeBartolo Development continues its winning ways in the real estate field, with successful investment projects throughout the United States. Currently, their largest project just so happens to be right here in Hawaii, the Ka Makana Ali’i development in West Oahu.

Here’s a short Q&A with Rich Hartline, Vice President of Development.

As a developer, you obviously know a thing or two about evaluating properties, so what made you decide to locate your office space at Davies Pacific Center? We were looking for a space in the downtown business

district and Davies Pacific Center turned out to be the ideal location. We’re within walking distance to many of our business partners. The office space itself was also perfect for our needs, just the right size and ready to move in. Denise and her team run a first-class operation; we’ve been here nearly a year and are very happy with our decision.

Tell us a little about the Ka Makana Ali’i project. West Oahu is one of the fastest growing regions in the state. Ka Makana Ali’i will reside in Kapolei and is the first regional shopping center to be built on Oahu in more than three decades. When complete, Ka Makana Ali’i will be the gathering place for West Oahu residents and visitors. It will consist of more than 150 shopping, dining, and entertainment options, as well as two hotels and office space. Construction is already under way with the first phase scheduled to be complete next year.

So, what can West Oahu residents look forward to? Some of the tenants that have already come on board

include: Macy’s, H&M, Forever 21, AT&T, Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, Rix and Town & Country Surf Designs. It’ll have the first Hampton Inn and Suites in Hawaii. Plus, there’ll be movie theatres and restaurants, including a few well-known eateries that will be entering the Hawaii market for the first time. We envision Ka Makana Ali’i to be a family-friendly town center, where people can find everything they need, all in one place. This is something the community needs and deserves.

Does DeBartolo Development have any other projects in Hawaii? Besides Ka Makana Ali’i, we have the Aqua Pearl Resort in Waikiki, which we’ll be enhancing over the next few years. And, we’re always on the look out for new opportunities both here and on the neighbor islands. We relocated our West Coast main office from Arizona to Hawaii last year, as we’re very much committed to the Hawaii market.

The Fourth Annual Kaka’ako Community Cleanup was held on April 18th, in celebration of Earth Day 2015. This year’s event focused on cleaning and sprucing up Mother Waldron Park with additional cleanup efforts extending down both the Mauka and Makai sides of Pohukaina/Halekuwila Streets from Cooke Street to South Street, and ending at Waterfront Plaza.

The cleanup included picking up trash, pulling weeds, and removing debris from the street, park, and gutters. The team of over 100 volun-teers also removed graffiti, painted the playground equipment, painted and stenciled the storm drains as part of the city’s “No Dumping” campaign, and painted the park’s restrooms.

This annual event is sponsored by: The Shidler Group, Totally Against Graffiti (T.A.G.), Kaka’ako Improvement Association, and Building Owners and Managers Association Hawaii (BOMA Hawai’i).

Books Are Fun Book Fair TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST - 7:00AM–1:30PM

Did you know that when you make a purchase at the Books Are Fun Book Fairs, you are also contributing to the Hawaii Foodbank? It’s true! At the conclusion of our last book fair, which was held on April 14th, Books Are Fun was able to make a generous contribution of $78.33 to the local non-profit organization on behalf of the Davies Pacific Center and its tenants.

OVERVIEW

Effective July 1, 2015, businesses shall be prohibited from providing plastic checkout bags and non-recyclable paper bags to their customers at the point of sale.

Nothing in the ordinance shall preclude a business from making available to customers, with or without charge, at the point of sale:

• Reusable bags, compostable plastic bags, or recyclable paper bags for the purpose of transporting groceries or other merchandise; or

• Non-recyclable paper bags to protect or transport prepared foods, beverages, or bakery goods.

BANNED PLASTIC BAGS

Plastic Checkout Bag means a carryout bag that is provided by a business to a customer for the purpose of transporting groceries or other retail goods, and is made from non-com-postable plastic and not specifically designed and manufactured for multiple re-use.

The following types of bags are excluded from the ban, and may continue to be used:

• Bags used by customers inside a business to package loose items, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, ground coffee, grains, candies, or small hardware items;

• Bags used to contain or wrap frozen foods, meat or fish, flowers or potted plants, or other items to contain dampness;

• Bags used to protect or transport prepared foods, beverages, or bakery goods, including takeout bags used at restaurants, fast food restaurants, and lunch wagons, to transport prepared foods;

• Bags provided by pharmacists to contain prescription medications;

• Newspaper bags for home newspaper delivery;

• Door-hanger bags;

• Laundry, dry cleaning, or garment bags, including bags provided by hotels to guests to contain wet or dirty clothing;

• Bags sold in packages containing multiple bags intended for use as garbage, pet waste, or yard waste bags;

• Bags used to contain live animals, such as fish or insects sold in pet stores;

• Bags used to transport chemical pesticides, drain-cleaning chemicals, or other caustic chemicals sold at the retail level, provided that this exemption shall be limited to one bag per customer; and

• Compostable plastic bags.

ACCEPTABLE BAGS

Compostable Plastic Bag means a checkout bag that is provided to a customer for the purpose of transporting groceries or other retail goods, which meets current ASTM D6400 Standard Specifications for compostability and is labeled:

• With the Biodegradable Product Institute (“BPI”) logo as meeting the ASTM standard for compostability; and

• With “Compostable” on both sides of the bag in either green lettering that is at least one inch in height, or as otherwise specified; or within a green band that is at least one inch in height in order to be readily and easily identifiable.

Recyclable Paper Bag means a paper bag that: (1) is one hundred percent recyclable, (2) contains a minimum of forty percent post-con-sumer recycled content, and (3) displays the words “Reusable” and “Recyclable” in a highly visible manner on the outside of the bags.

“Reusable Bag” means a bag with handles that is specifically designed and manufactured for multiple reuse and is made of: (1) cloth or other washable fabric; or (2) durable material suitable for reuse, including plastic that is at least 2.25 mils thick.

SMALL AND SAVORY, PERFECT FOR SUMMER!

Cook cloves from 1 head garlic in 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter in

a small covered saucepan over medium-low heat until golden brown

and very soft, 15–20 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl; let cool.

Add 1 cup grated Parmesan, 2 teaspoons chopped oregano, 1

teaspoon grated lemon zest, and 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

flakes to garlic and mash to a paste; season with salt.

Heat broiler. Slice a baguette in half lengthwise, then crosswise.

Broil, cut side down, on a foil-lined baking sheet until golden

brown, about 2 minutes (watch carefully). Let cool slightly, then

spread cut side with garlic paste. Broil until cheese is golden and

bubbling, about 2 minutes. Slice.

DPC STAFF PROFILESJessica VogtBorn and raised on Oahu, Jessica brings over a decade of customer service, hospitality, and administrative experience throughout various industries, ranging from food service to fashion. Jessica has been with The Shidler Group since January 1, 2014. She was assigned to the Property Management Office at our sister property, Waterfront Plaza, as a temp, and was hired permanently shortly thereafter. Besides being a new addition to the Davies Management Office, she is currently a full-time student with an online institution, completing her Associate degree in Applied Science in Information Technology. She and her husband currently reside in the Salt Lake area with their two young children, Samarra, 8, and Elijah, 3. In her free time, Jessica enjoys cooking and hosting dinner parties for her friends and family. Among other things, Jessica especially enjoys being outdoors, crafting projects with her children, and planning for her future business as a café/restaurant owner.

Vickie L. KingI was raised as a townie in Jamesport, Missouri, and grew up with hardworking parents who continue a forty-year tradition in the construction business.

In 1992, I decided to become a globe-trotting Marine (Aviation-Flight Line Supply). After attending boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina, I was stationed in Yuma, Arizona for three years and Iwakuni, Japan for fourteen months. After serving in the military, I was a Correctional Officer in a minimum-security men’s prison in Cameron, Missouri for over a year.

In 1997, I relocated to New York City to embark on a new career and worked as an Administrative Assistant to the Trump Organization’s Security Director in Property Management for five years. While working with the Trump Organization, I obtained my New York real-estate license and worked as a sales agent for eight years. For two years I worked as a Field Security Supervisor/Building Evacuation Specialist for Classic Security. I joined Securitas Security in 2012, and worked at The Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City as a Fire Safety Director/Supervisor. I was granted a transfer to Honolulu in 2015, so I could be closer to a family member who serves in the United States Army.

In my leisure time, I enjoy reading, exploring Hawaii and going to the beach. I also don’t mind having a nice glass of Merlot with family and friends, paired with some good food, of course!
