Opening Hymn

At the Name of Jesus king’s weston

At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow,

every tongue confess him King of glory now;

’tis the Father’s pleasure we should call him Lord,

who from the beginning was the mighty Word.

Humbled for a season, to receive a name

from the lips of sinners unto whom he came,

faithfully he bore it, spotless to the last,

brought it back victorious when from death he passed.

Bore it up triumphant with its human light,

through all ranks of creatures to the central height,

to the throne of Godhead, to the Father’s breast;

filled it with the glory of that perfect rest.

In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue

all that is not holy, all that is not true.

Crown him as your captain in temptation's hour;

let his will enfold you in its light and power. words: Caroline M. Noel, 1870

SERVICE

Prayer of Confession

Almighty and merciful God,

we know that when we offend another, we offend you.

We are aware that we have often allowed the shadow of hate

to cloud our souls, hiding the light from our unseeking eyes.

We have said unpleasant and hurtful things to our brothers and sisters

when they failed to live up to our expectations.

Grant that we might find that spark of love that ever burns within us,

the love that you have shown to us even when we failed you.

Fan the embers of that love until it roars again

in flames of love, peace, and reconciliation.

Forgive us our sins and help us to forgive those who have sinned against us.

Lead us into new life through your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for the sins of all. Amen.

Michael J. O’Donnell, USA, 20th cent.

Song of Forgiveness

O Lord, Have Mercy oré poriajú verekó

O Lord, have mercy, O Lord, have mercy, O Lord, have mercy, have mercy on us.

O Christ, have mercy, O Christ, have mercy, O Christ, have mercy, have mercy on us.

O Lord, have mercy, O Lord, have mercy, O Lord, have mercy, have mercy on us.

words and music: Guarani Kyrie, Paraguay; harm. Carlton R. Young

Words of Assurance

Pastor: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners;

that proves God’s love toward us.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

All: Glory to God. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination

Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus lemmel

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face,

and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.

words and music: Helen H. Lemmel, 1922

Gospel Reading John 12:20-33; Frieda Brown, lector

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to

Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’

Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered

them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a

grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears

much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will

keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my

servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is

for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came

from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ The crowd standing there heard it

and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ Jesus answered, ‘This

voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler

of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people

to myself.’ He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Lector: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

People: Praise to you, O Christ!

Sermon Rev. Dianne Lawhorn

Affirmation of Faith A Modern Affirmation #885, United Methodist Hymnal

Pastor:

Where the Spirit of the Lord is,

there is the one true church, apostolic and universal,

whose holy faith let us now declare:

Pastor and People:

We believe in God the Father,

infinite in wisdom, power, and love,

whose mercy is over all his works,

and whose will is ever directed to

his children’s good.

We believe in Jesus Christ,

Son of God and Son of man,

the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace,

the ground of our hope,

and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death.

We believe in the Holy Spirit

as the divine presence in our lives,

whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance

of the truth of Christ,

and find strength and help in time of need.

We believe that this faith should manifest itself

in the service of love

as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord,

to the end

that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.

Gloria Patri greatorex

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen. Amen.

words: Lesser Doxology, 3rd - 4th cent.

music: Henry W. Greatorex, 1851

Doxology old 100th

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below;

praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

music: Attr. to Louis Bourgeois, 1551

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

We will serve in a manner befitting our protocols, distanced with individual wafers and

individual (and sealed) cups of juice, leaving it to the discretion of our in-person participants

about whether to receive. Those receiving will do so at the altar rails, one pew section at a time.

The Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

…And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name

and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

…And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in

praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us,

as we proclaim the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery

in which you have given yourself to us.

Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit,

to give ourselves for others,

in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Closing Hymn

Take Up Thy Cross germany

"Take up thy cross," the Savior said, "if thou wouldst my disciple be;

deny thyself, the world forsake, and humbly follow after me."

Take up thy cross, let not its weight fill thy weak spirit with alarm;

his strength shall bear thy spirit up, and brace thy heart and nerve thine arm.

Take up thy cross, nor heed the shame, nor let thy foolish pride rebel;

thy Lord for thee the cross endured, to save thy soul from death and hell.

Take up thy cross and follow Christ, nor think till death to lay it down;

for only those who bear the cross may hope to wear the glorious crown.

words: Charles W. Everest, 1833 music: William Gardiner’s Sacred Melodies, 1815

containers located outside the Church Office.

Men's Shelter DUMC provides a meal for the Men's Shelter the first Sunday of every month. Our

next date is Sunday, April 4. Sign up at www.davidsonumc.org under Registrations to serve a meal,

make a sausage or vegetarian casserole, or purchase fruit cocktail or green beans. You may notice a

slight change in the amount of items requested for the Men's Shelter. Due to the increase in their needs,

we were asked if a larger quantity of food could be delivered. The amount of casseroles, fruit, and green

beans has been adjusted to help the Shelter feed more people. Thanks to all of you that have so faithfully

provided to this ministry, your passion for it is a gift.

Hospitality and Worship Opportunity

DUMC Greeter Greeters are guests first official point of contact with the congregation. They provide the

most important first impression of our congregation. They offer hospitality to everyone. Greeters remember

that all people are important to God and welcome them as such. If you feel led to be a welcoming and

inclusive part of DUMC, consider serving as one of its Greeters. This is a great way to meet new people

and say hello to old friends as they come for worship. Greeters are needed 20 minutes prior to the start of

each service and, if needed, Greeters will have a reserved seat in worship. To learn more and join the

Greeter Team, contact Charlotte Thomas at [email protected] or at 704-892-8277, ext. 279.
