NTMA Honor Award“ Terrazzo was selected for Miami International after a comprehensive
study during the design phase. It investigated almost every type of
flooring and included interviews with maintenance and operations
directors of airports in the U.S. and abroad. It concluded that a smooth,
seamless, hard surface was the best floor for public areas of today’s
airport. Terrazzo was the number one choice to meet that criteria.”

“ We would all like to use terrazzo because we know it
will be there and look good for the life of the building
— and it is low maintenance. Studies have shown,
if you base your floor selection on life-cycle cost,
Terrazzo is half or less the cost of VCT or carpet!”

The Terrazzo designs in this 158,000 square foot, 100-year-old building renovation used over 70 colors and 30 different aggregates. Floor murals blend abstraction, realism, and
varied perspectives, depicting a butterfly with a 66-foot wing perched on an iris, a railroad wheel, a series of stars, a bouquet
of daisies, and a pair of comedy and tragedy masks.

Composition and Embodied Energy: Terrazzo is composed of naturally occurring materials.
Recycle/Reuse Content: Terrazzo can contain as much as 100% recycled content.
VOC Off-Gassing and Indoor Air Quality: Both cement based and thin set epoxy terrazzo systems are comprised of zero VOC materials.
Overall, on typical projects, terrazzo can realistically contribute to five LEED credits, or up to eight on a case-by-case scenario.
