Special Events of the Year
Children’s Day: 14th November 2010
No. of Children: 150 approx
Venue: Lohargarh Ground
It was for the first time Children day was being celebrated. Children were very excited
and happy and they started gathering before the schedule time. Children from four
schools gathered. A sports program was organized by the initiative of Lohargarh Steering
Committee and working committee of Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre. Biscuit race for
smaller children and running race for bigger children was organized. The program ended
with a Dance competition.
Mary Ward Celebration: 31st January2011
The celebration was on 31st January at the centre itself. DMWSC joined the Loreto Family
world wide on 28th January, 2011. This day is celebrated to remember Mary Ward’s life
and contribution to the church and the world. A small celebration was organized at the
centre. Project staffs from the field and friends were the guest.
Expo visit to Delhi: 18th-21st February 2011
In collaboration with Delhi Domestic Worker’s Forum (DWF), Darjeeling Mary Ward social
Centre (DMWSC) arranged a three days Exposure visit for 13 members of the Community
Vigilance Committee (CVC) and field staff from Gulma tea Estate. The participants are

part of the ‘safe Migration’ programme, which is being implemented in Gulma, Mohargoan,
Dhagapur and Sukna Tea gardens in Champasari Gram Panchayat. The programme’s aim was
to strengthen community level mechanisms for counter trafficking and exploitation of
women and children.
Women’s Day celebration: 13th March 2011

International women’s Day (8th march) is a global day celebrating the economic political and
social achievements of women past, present and future. This year Women’s Day celebration
was celebrated at Chenga Ground on 13th March 2011.
Another celebration was marked in Gulma and New Chumta. Festivities included rallies and
displays of traditional dancing.
Staffs from Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre (DMWSC) were also able to bring some
of the celebratory atmosphere to the women inmates of the Siliguri Special Correctional
Home (prison), an opportunity provided by the Cluny Sisters’ Ministry there. During the
visit, the women were given gifts of flowering plants, which they could plant to brighten
their surroundings.

World Environment Day is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and
enhances political attention and public action. It is on 5 June. In Gulma Tea Estate
Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm. They planted trees and the whole
week was celebrated as Environment week with the slogan ‘SAVE TREES SAVE LIFE’.

Worlds Day against Child labour organized by ATN: 11th-12th June 2011

The Anti- Trafficking Network (ATN) of Siliguri organised an Awareness mela to mark the
occasion. In the two day’s program organized by ATN, Mary Ward Social Centre (MWSC)
as a part of the network participated and supported the event. MWSC had opened a stall
mentioning the different activities on what it deals with. The ATN which regulates the
work of Child Trafficking initiated this observance with the aim to support the vulnerable
groups.
Papal Exhibition
To mark the 25th Anniversary of the visit to India by Pope John Paul II, a team of church
high dignitaries made visits to several Indian cities in February. For their visit to Kolkata
on 6th February 2011, they were interested in meeting those involved with the social
service in the region. Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre (DMWSC) was invited to
participate in an exhibition showcasing the development work of church organizations in
West Bengal and Sikkim.
The Exhibition was organized by ABCD. The ‘Safe Migration’ team from DMWSC
participated in the exhibition. In the exhibition, along with other NGO’s we had a stall
where posters showing work of Safe migration were kept.

Projects: Collective Voices
OBJECTIVE: To empower local communities to know promote and enact their rights in EPHN.
PROJECT AREA: Panighatta, Lohargarh, Chenga, Panthabari
Population: 10,390
KEY ACTIVITIES:
• Training on Education, Protection, Health and Nutrition.
• Training on Documentation at CINI office, Kolkatta.
• Training on Focus Group Discussion and on Resource and social mapping for all the volunteers
who included the SHG as well as the youth.
• Involvement of volunteers (youth and SHG member) in the baseline helped enhance their
awareness about local issues and concerns.
• Resource maps were developed for the three communities –Panighatta Lohagarh and Chenga.
Resource mapping and sensitization done in the field.
• Linkage has been established with most of the key government functionaries and other stake
holders across EPHN domains.
• Formation of Working committee and Steering Committee.
• 28 women have been benefited from Janani Suraksha Yojana in Panighatta and Chenga.
• SHG women volunteer’s in Panighatta helped foil an agent’s attempt to take away local girls on
the pretext of giving them work. • Project supervisor has helped 30 families in Panighatta to be enlisted as BPL families. • The project team helped the Loreto School in Panighatta to obtain provisional tribal
certificates for 27 children. • The project team has helped 30 families in Panighatta and Chenga to get Ration card. • The project team has helped 57 children joined the ICDS school. • The project team has helped 75 elders to get their pension. • The project team has helped 8 drop out children to get admission at school. • The project team has helped 47 children to get immunization (polio). • Evaluation of the Project development at the end of one year.
IMPACT:
• Increased access and utilization of health and nutrition services in order to reduce child and
woman morbidity and mortality.
• Increased awareness about child and human trafficking and increase in elementary education
enrolment and retention rates especially among girl children.
• Increased in children receiving pre-school education and care through early childhood
stimulation activities.
• Increased in access and demand of essential EHNP services among target communities.

Project: Safe Migration
GOAL: Reducing number of incidences of unsafe migration, commercial sexual exploitation and
trafficking of women and children in Darjeeling region.
OBJECTIVE:
• Increase awareness on Human Trafficking
• Increased linkage and collaboration with the Government/ NGOs/ Ingo’s/ Civil
Society/Institutions/Media.
• Rescue the number of Unsafe Migration/Human trafficking cases.
PROJECT AREA: Gulma, Mohargoan, Dhagapur, Sukhna, New Chamta , Adalpur, Siptuguri,
Putingbari.
Population: 15,970
KEY ACTIVITIES:
• The project team has helped the formation of 13 Groups of Adolescent Girls Group.
• The project team has helped the formation of 12 Groups of Community Vigilance
Committee.
• The project team has helped the formation of 5 Youth Groups.
• 48 Self Help Group has been formed by the women in Gulma and the project team is
following up these Self Help Group.
• 27 lecture based programs were organized to increase awareness on human trafficking.
• Linking with Don Bosco, the project team through Vocational Training for the youth have
helped 5 youths to get trained in hotel management and now they are working.
• Involvement of local volunteers helped during awareness programme. Volunteers helped
the project team to gather local people, to maintain silence, and provided sound system
and Television for the session.
• Providing linkages for job opportunities. The project team helped 5 people to get jobs at
Bengal Kidney Centre at Pradhan Nagar, Siliguri.
• Networking with NGOS, through Anti Trafficking Network meeting and sharing
experiences.
• Networking with District Resource person/Gram Panchayat Resource Person (DRP/GPRP).
In the tea gardens DRP/GRP gives training to the tea garden workers but they never
came hence the project team met them and asked them to visit the tea garden and give
training to the tea garden workers. One training has been organized already.
• Networking with Pradhan, Up- Pradhan and Food & Supply. A survey was done at the
village regarding tribal certificate, ration cards, but the result was poor. So the project
team in this matter met Pradhan, Up- Pradhan and follow-up is being done.
• Networking with Bank Manager. Bank manager attends and visits the tea garden workers.
The Project team set up links with bank Manager to ensure that the Branch Manager
attends the self Help Group meeting of the Committee.

Child protection Programme
GOAL: To initiate community based child protection monitoring cells around the transit points
and market places.
OBJECTIVE:
• To combat instances of trafficking
• To provide rescue and restoration services through linkage and networking
• To help the rescued children deal with psychosocial problems through intensive counseling
and health services.
PROJECT AREA: Siliguri, Panighatta and Gulma tea Estates.
KEY ACTIVITIES:
• Staff selection.
• Sensitization programme was conducted for the community people.
• Formation of the community based monitoring cells.
• 3 Training on child rights, child abuse, child labour and J.J.Act has been performed.
• Training on anti trafficking act and safe &unsafe migration.
• Training on Barefoot Counseling and Child Psychology.
• Collaborating with Child In Need Institute, Darjeeling Mary Ward Social Centre
organized an Advocacy meeting on Child Protection issue with the government officials
and local NGOs.
• Rescue and restoration of children from difficult circumstances. The project team helped
to rescue 9 children.
• Monthly meetings with the community animators at Centre.
• Meetings of the partners (Child In Need Institute (CINI), Mary Ward Social Centre
(MWSC) and Kanchanjunga Uddhar Kendra (KUK).
• Rallies in the community for awareness generation.
IMPACT:
• Increased awareness about child trafficking.
• Increase in understanding and knowledge of child rights, child labour and child
trafficking. As a result the monitoring cells are helping in rescuing and restoring the
children.
• Effective mechanisms are being developed on child’s protection issues. Eg. Mayor of
Siliguri Mrs. Gangotri Dutta was the guest in a programme ‘Advocacy meeting on Child
Protection issues’ organized by Child In Need Institute& Darjeeling Mary Ward Social
Centre.
