My Projects-Torque Wrench

• My Role – Assess Torque Wrench Reliability over 100 uses for

multiple configurations– Determine if addition of glass to the torque ring reduces

wear– Confirm that torque ring modifications eliminate crack

failures– Characterize output torque over time

Page 7: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

Torque Wrench Overview• Four main components

– Torque Ring– Spline – Engagement Button– Distal Spring

Page 8: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

Torque Wrench Overview

Page 9: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

Torque Wrench Overview• Assembly

– Button in engaged position– Clickers and teeth become aligned during clockwise rotation– Engagement arms acts as cantilever beam

• Disassembly – Counterclockwise rotation – No deflection-allows app to unscrew

Page 10: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Test Method

– 3 Torque Ring Materials, 5 specimen each A:Radel R-5000, B: Radel R-5000+2.5% Glass Fibers C: Radel R-5000+2.5% Glass Beads

– Ultem-5000 Spline– Block: 50 Torque Cycles, 25 Autoclave Cycles

2 Assemblies per Operation

Page 11: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Conclusions

– Output torque did not remain within the 5-10 lbf*in range requirement– Group A’s peak torques decline at a lesser rate than that of Groups B

and C– No perceivable difference in the wear due to the addition of the glass in

the Radel material. – No evidence of crack failures in the torque rings– Uneven wear

Page 12: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Next Steps

– Implement design modifications to increase contact area and minimize rocking during rotation» Addition of engagement arm

Page 13: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Test

– Simulate the “added arm” to support the hypothesis– Addition of shims to torque wrench

Page 14: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Test

– Torque Wrench Groups A: Receives autoclave sterilization B: No autoclave sterilization

– Effect of autoclave sterilization on torque– Reliability of design modification

Page 15: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects-Torque Wrench • Results

– Output Torque remained between 5-10 lbf*in – Declining Torque over Cycle Blocks

» Group A declined at a lesser rate than B– Even Wear– Statistical difference between Group A & B

My Projects- Clamp Force Fixture

• My Role – Fabrication of Fixture used for Summit Clamp Force

Measurements – De-Bug

» Update Solid works Files» Buccaneer Nest

– Update Test Method » Universal for Buccaneer, Summit, ACE

– Complete GR&R

Page 17: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects- Clamp Force Fixture

• Lasso Test Method – Thin conductive wire (5V) placed between the clamp arm

and blade – Blade is grounded– Instron exerts force to the clamp arm until the contact is

broken – The force is recorded when the voltage drops below

1.5V

Page 18: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects- Clamp Force Fixture

Page 19: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

My Projects- Clamp Force Fixture • Results

– GR&R Failed– Pad Deformation on Buccaneer Device Clamp Arm

• Next Steps/Recommendations– Implement a feature to hold proximal linear slide into place once

desired position is acquired » Pin that interferes with interactions between the legs of the slide

and the railing – Adding Chamois to the Wire

Page 20: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

Additional Projects

• MR Sensor GR&R – Test set-up – Document Test Method– Minitab GR&R Analysis

Page 21: Danielle Terry End of Term Presentation Fall 2015

Additional Projects

• Blade Displacement Testing– Engineering Study for Test Method

• Blade Load Testing • Fuji Algorithm Testing- Burst Pressure Analysis• Voltage Testing for Spot Coagulation• Denali Sterilization Testing
