Equalizer setting
The sound in the vehicle is influenced deci-sively by the acoustic characteristics of thepassenger compartment, substantially morethan by the characteristics of the loudspeak-ers.
The position and installation of the loud-speakers and the volume to the rear, for ex-ample of the door or rear shelf, are howev-er also important.
Even when suitable loudspeakers havebeen selected and installed properly, reso-nances in the passenger compartment mayhave a detrimental effect upon the sound.
This can result in the bass frequenciesbooming or being absent, mid-frequenciesencroaching excessively, musical instru-ments or voices being strongly distorted, orthe sound generally being muffled.
The subjective sound impression can beimproved considerably by suppression oramplification of certain frequency ranges bythe car radio.
This unit is equipped with two parametric fil-ters. The first filter, “LOW EQ”, can be ad-justed from 32 to 500 Hz, the second, “HIGHEQ”, from 630 to 10 000 Hz. In this case, parametric means that one frequency canbe increased or reduced for each of the twofilters (+10 to -20 dB). The bandwidth/qual-ity of the two filters can also be adjusted.
The parametric filters can be adjusted ex-actly without instruments.
In addition, you can select from seven pre-programmed equalizer settings, which areadjusted for different musical styles. Referto the “Selecting pre-set sound settings”section.
The steps required for adjustment are de-scribed in the table.
Adjustment instructions
The instructions below represent a recom-mendation only. You can adjust the soundcharacteristics according to your own per-sonal preference.
We recommend that you use a familiar mu-sic CD for adjustment of the filters. The MD/CD should include tracks with a range of in-struments and voice. Pure electronic musicis not suitable for evaluation purposes, sincethe original sound is not known.
Before adjusting the equalizer, set the bass, treble, balance and fader to “0”.
This setting is described in the condensedinstructions under 8 AUD.
Now listen to the MD/CD with which you arefamiliar.
Evaluate your impression of the sound ac-cording to your taste.
Now read the “Tonal effect/problem” columnin the table, and look for solutions under“Measure”.
Use the LOW EQ filter for settings in thebass and lower mid-range, and the HIGHEQ filter for the treble and upper mid-range.
The “HIGH EQ” and “LOW EQ” filters canbe adjusted in the DPE menu:• Press DPE to call up the DPE main
menu.
Adjusting the frequency level
• Press / repeatedly until “HIGH EQ”or “LOW EQ” appear in the display.
• Press << or >> once or several timesto select the frequency.
• Press / once or several times toadjust the level (GAIN +8 ... GAIN -8).
• Press << or >> once or several timesto select a different frequency and toadjust the level accordingly.
• Press DPE or EXIT to save the select-ed level and to return to the DPE mainmenu.
• Press DPE or EXIT again to close theDPE menu.

Selecting a quality factor for the bassor mid-range
• Press / repeatedly until “LO-Q-FAC” or “HI-Q-FAC” appear in the dis-play.
• Press << or >> once or several timesin order to set the quality factor (Q-FACT 1 to Q-FACT 3).
• Press / to save the selected factorand return to the DPE main menu.
Or
• Press DPE or EXIT to save the select-ed factor and to close the DPE mainmenu.
Selecting the preset sound setting:
Selecting a preset influences the equalizerand sound settings of the unit. Each selected preset can be adjusted man-ually. When a different preset is selected, however, the factory default setting is re-stored. Your personal sound settings forBASS, TREBLE, EQ and LD are stored inthe “USER” preset mode.
To call up the presets:• Press / repeatedly until “PRESET”
appears on the display.
• Press << or >> once or several timesto select the (*USER* >> LINEAR >>ROCK >> DISCO >> JAZZ >>CLASSIC >> VOCAL) equalizer set-ting.
• Press / to save the selected equal-izer setting and return to the DPE mainmenu.
Or
• Press DPE or EXIT to save the select-ed equalizer setting and to close theDPE main menu.
