WHAT ARE THE DRIVING FORCES BEHIND THE KNOWLEDGE –

BASED BIO –ECONOMY BEYOND COMPETITIVENESS?

Source: EC

Global challenges like:

Growing and aging populations;

Increased demand for high quality food and sustainable food production;

Increased incidence of food - related disorders (cardiovascular, obesity…);

Increased demand for feed;

Increase in infectious animal diseases and zoonoses;

Danger of plant diseases, new pathogens and pesticides;

Limited resources of raw materials and energy;

Threat of global warming and other global changes (biodiversity loss, etc…)

WHY

EUROPEAN TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS?

EUROPEAN TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS (ETPs) were set up as industry-led stakeholder forums with the aim of :

defining medium to long-term research and technological objectives;

developing roadmaps to achieve them;

contributing to increasing synergies between different research actors, ultimately enhancing European competitiveness.

STAKEHOLDERS TYPICALLY INVOLVED:

INDUSTRY - large, medium and small, embracing the whole production and supply chain, including component, equipment and sub-system suppliers and user industries. In addition to the research actors, those involved in technology transfer and the commercial deployment of technologies (for example, service providers and operators would also normally participate).

PUBLIC AUTHORITIES - in their role of policy makers and funding agencies, as well as promoters and consumers of technologies. Although, given their strategic dimension, policy measures and related initiatives may be launched at the European level, national, regional and local levels should also be associated, especially when they are important initiators of policy. Some platforms have created so-called Member States “Mirror Groups”, with the objective of providing co-ordination and an effective two-way interface between the platform developments and complementary activities at a national level.

RESEARCH INSTITUTES AND THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY (especially encouraging the academic/industrial interface).

FINANCIAL COMMUNITY (private banks (including the EIB), the European Investment Fund (EIF), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), venture capital, business incubators etc.).

CIVIL SOCIETY, INCLUDING USERS AND CONSUMERS - ensuring that research agendas benefit from a mutual dialogue between the research community and society as a whole and that they involve the future customer base. In some instances, participation from trade unions could also be considered.

WHY A NATIONAL COORDINATION?

Following BEcoTePs experiences and the recent developments in EU research activities (JPIs, ERA-NETs, VIII FP, ecc…) a coordination of KBBE National Technology Platforms was promoted also in Italy. Mr. Luigi Rossi is the person in charge.

This activity will be addressed at:

Defining common themes and joint priorities across the widely diverse sectors relevant for the Bioeconomy at national level.

Developing the dialogue with national Institutions that was started in 2009.

EXPO

THE FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE AND

TECHNOLOGY:

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR KBBE NTPSs!

The theme: Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.

The Expo Milano 2015 will be a universal event which will provide visibility for tradition, creativity and innovation in the field of nutrition, inspired by themes which have already been developed in earlier editions of the Expo and adapting them in the light of new global scenarios at the heart of which there is the right for the entire planet to have access to healthy, safe and sufficient food.
