Special ‘On Duty’ episodeto focus on dramatic rescue

Last month’s dramatic rescue of amother and her two children trapped in acar over the edge of Highway 101 will beshown up close and personal on thisweek’s episode of “On Duty with SantaBarbara Firefighters,” Saturday at 7 p.m.on KEYT.

The 30-minute episode of “On Duty”is devoted to the tragedy and rescue.Viewers will see new footage of the res-cue and the work put in by county fire-fighters trying to free the victims insidethe car.

“On Duty” producer Linda Distenfieldsaid it’s one of the most incredible andintense stories she’s seen.

“I’ve seen the story many, many, timesover and I still get teary,” Distenfieldsaid.

The episode features interviews withsix of the firefighters involved, includingtwo who stayed with the 10-year-old girland her mother during the whole ordeal.Distenfield said it’d been a deep, emo-tional experience for the firefighters whoaren’t used to staying with those they res-cue for such a long time.

“They don’t usually spend this muchtime with people they’re helping,”Distenfield said.

On Jan. 12, a big-rig truck rear-endeda BMW in the northbound lane ofHighway 101, south of Buellton in theThree Bridges area.

After smashing the car, the truckdrove off the bridge and crashed into the

creek below where it burst into flames,killing the driver, Grover Beach residentCharles Allison Jr.

The impact left the BMW teeteringover the edge of the bridge for hours. Amother and her two children, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-month baby weretrapped inside until firefighters, with the

I had a mid-life revelationthis week. After a busy week-end standing around bonfires,barbecues and beaches talkingabout the weather (hot), sports(a good week at AppalachianState), and my child’s school’sspring break week, I realizedsomething: I spend far toomuch of my time talking aboutthings that don’t really mat-ter—or even hold much inter-est—to me.

That’s it. I’m done. Terminado. Nowthat I’m in my “late” mid-forties, andI’m starting to think I don’t want to liveto be 100, which makes me middle-agedlike, uh, now, it’s high time for me tostop fooling around and take a stand. Sohere it is: From this day forward I ambanishing the banter of small talk frommy life.

It’s not that I’m not a talker, I LOVEto talk, especially late at night (just askmy grumpy husband). But time’s awasting. I’m not getting any youngerand I don’t have any more time to wasteon idle chit chat when I could be talkingabout something, well, better.

From now on, no more small talk.Try asking me how I am. Last week Iwould have automatically answered“Fine. How’s it going?” or some otherequally scintillating conversationalnugget, but this week I’ll give you a realanswer, like, “How did I get to be soold?”

See what I did there? That’s one ofthe secrets of great conversationalists. Ianswered a question with a question.OK, it was a rhetorical question, butgive me a break. I’m new at this smalltalk banishment stuff.

But I think I’m onto some-thing with this answering aquestion with a question thing.Everybody’s favorite thing totalk about is themselves. Plus,I’m a naturally nosy person(hence the journalism career),so this new anti-small talkstrategy will work both ways.You get to talk about you—thus making you think I’mcharming and witty and inter-esting to talk to—and I get tofind out what I really want toknow.

Here’s an example. You ask me aboutthe weather, and I ignore your questionand ask you about what you thinkwould change if a woman were presi-dent.

Or you make an inane commentabout sports, and I’ll ask you when thelast time was that you had sex. “Do youreally believe in God or do you just likegoing to church? Are you naturally skin-ny or anorexic? Has your husbandalways been a jerk, or is he just havinga bad year?”

Isn’t this fun?Admit it, with the rare exception of

earth shattering headlines (“PearlHarbor Bombed” and “Kennedy Shot”come to mind) these off limits topics area thousand times more interesting thanany current events.

“Did you catch the news today?”might be greeted with “Do you feedyour kids healthier food in public thanyou do when they’re at home?”

“Thank God it’s Friday,” could gar-ner a response from me like, “Have youever Googled an ex-boyfriend?”

Hey, I didn’t say I was going to bespeaking deep thoughts from here on in,I only promised that I’d stop talking

about all the things I could not care lessabout and start talking about the thingsI’m really interested in. So when wasthe last time you thought about that ex-girlfriend of yours? Were you havingsex?

Asking better questions could actual-ly change the world—or at least oursocial gatherings—if we all joined inand started asking people about thethings that used to be considered rude.

Try one of these anti-small talk con-versation starters at your next party:

� How do you feel when someonesays you’re just like your mother?

� Have you ever been fired?� If you had to choose to be stuck

on a desert island with someone thatyou know—other than your spouse orsignificant other—who would you pick?(No, watching Angelina Jolie in a moviedoesn’t count as knowing her.)

� If you could go back in time andchange one thing about your childhood,what would it be?

� Have you ever gotten drunk andbeen told you did something you can’tremember doing?

� How much money do you make,and do you think you’re worth it?

� If I were to force you to singkaraoke right now, what song wouldyou pick?

� What would you like to accom-plish before you die?

And finally, � Is 48 really late-middle-aged?

is seeking the public’s help in locatinga 75-year old Isla Vista man who hasbeen missing since Monday.

James Otis Purcell was last seen at10:30 a.m. Monday morning when hewas driven from his senior livingfacility in Isla Vista to Santa Barbara

Cottage Hospital for a scheduled doc-tor’s appointment.

The driver, who had shuttledPurcell to the appointment, returned tothe hospital at 11:45 a.m.. and learnedthat Purcell had never attended thedoctor’s appointment.

Canada agreed on Wednesday to allow a member of the FlyingWallenda family of daredevils to attempt a tightrope walk overNiagara Falls, clearing the way for the stunt some time during thesummer.

Nik Wallenda, 33, secured support on the American side of thefalls last September when New York Governor Andrew Cuomosigned a bill giving him one year to perform the feat, whichWallenda says will be the first attempt in more than a century.

On Wednesday, the board of Canada’s Niagara ParksCommission voted unanimously to allow Wallenda to go ahead,reversing its earlier decision.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was 6 years old,” Wallendasaid by telephone from Niagara, where he had earlier attended theboard meeting. “This was a dream many told me was impossible:two countries to change laws. I’m blessed, that’s all I can say.”

Tightrope walker to cross Niagara

Nearly two-thirds of married couples and people with a sig-nificant other say their partner is the most important source ofhappiness in their lives, according to a new global poll releasedon Valentine’s Day.

And nearly half of all singles yearn above all else to find asweetheart, with about 45 percent saying finding a partnerwould bring them the greatest happiness.

“What strikes us when we look at the data is that you havethis majority of global citizens who are really looking at homefor happiness,” said Keren Gottfried, research manager at IpsosGlobal Public Affairs, which conducted the survey in 24 coun-tries.

up for the first anniversary of their royal wedding.Mattel Inc, the U.S. maker of Barbie dolls, said this week it

will release a special two-doll set in April to mark the one-yearanniversary of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding atWestminster Abbey.

The figures, part of Mattel’s Barbie Collector series, will comedressed up in outfits duplicating those the couple wore in a cere-mony that was viewed by an estimated 3 billion people world-wide.

For William, that means a pint-sized version of his red IrishGuards outfit with a bright blue sash.

For Kate, that means a miniature of the traditional white dressand veil she wore, as well as a teeny-tiny tiara just like the dia-mond-studded original she borrowed from Queen Elizabeth.

Scratch the Venti. Make that a Tall.Starbucks on Thursday took down its

controversial 4-foot, 6-inch glowinggreen mermaid sign on its new store onCarrillo Street.

The sign, although it was approvedmistakenly by the city last year, violatedthe sign rules.

The green sign went up two weeksago, and it caused a stir.

Once the city saw it, officials took adeeper look into the issue, where theydiscovered that Starbucks made a mis-take in how the described the sign to thecity. The city, however, owns someresponsibility because they didn’t catchthe error when the proposal was submit-ted.

The city’s Sign Committee reviewedthe proposal on Wednesday and decidedthat Starbucks should take the signdown.

The corporate giant agreed andremoved the sign. The company willput up a 36-inch wood sign that doesn’tlight up like the giant green mermaidsign did.

Starbucks is expected to submit a pro-

posal for a new 36” wood sign and returnto the Sign Committee for approval.

The city will not require Starbucks topay for any new permit or application

fees, said planner Jaime Limon.Starbucks will likely move the sign to

a new store out of Santa Barbara, Limonsaid.

U.N. condemns Syria, calls for resignationUNITED NATIONS (Reuters) — The

193-nation U.N. General Assemblyratcheted up the pressure on SyrianPresident Bashar al-Assad on Thursdayby overwhelmingly approving a resolu-tion that endorses an Arab League plancalling for him to step aside.

“Today the U.N. General Assemblysent a clear message to the people ofSyria -- the world is with you,” U.S.Ambassador to the United Nations SusanRice said in a statement.

“An overwhelming majority of U.N.

member states have backed the plan putforward by the Arab League to end thesuffering of Syrians,” she said. “Basharal-Assad has never been more isolated.”

The resolution, similar to one Russiaand China vetoed in the Security Councilon February 4, received 137 votes infavor, 12 against and 17 abstentions,although three countries said their votesfailed to register on the electronic board.

Russia and China were among thoseopposing the resolution, which wasdrafted by Saudi Arabia and submitted

by Egypt on behalf of Arab states. Unlikein the Security Council, there are novetoes in the General Assembly, but itsdecisions lack the legal force of councilresolutions.

The resolution said the assembly“fully supports” the Arab League planaimed at halting Syria’s 11-month crack-down on anti-Assad demonstrators andurges U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a special envoy to Syria.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) — A reportthis week showing rampant foreclosureabuse in San Francisco reflects similarlevels of lender fraud and faulty docu-mentation across the United States, sayexperts and officials who have donestudies in other parts of the country.

The audit of almost 400 foreclosuresin San Francisco found that 84 percent ofthem appeared to be illegal, according tothe study released by the California cityon Wednesday.

“The audit in San Francisco is themost detailed and comprehensive thathas been done - but it’s likely those num-bers are comparable nationally,” DianeThompson, an attorney at the NationalConsumer Law Center, told Reuters.

Across the country from California,Jeff Thingpen, register of deeds inGuildford County, North Carolina,examined 6,100 mortgage documentslast year, from loan notes to foreclosurepaperwork.

Of those documents, created betweenJanuary 2008 and December 2010, 4,500

showed signature irregularities, a telltalesign of the illegal practice of “robosign-ing” documents.

Robosigning involves the use ofbogus documents to force foreclosures

help of the Navy’s construction crew, the SeaBees, and their crane and forklift, freed them.

A helicopter flew the woman and the 10-year-old girl to Cottage Hospital. Both sus-tained moderate injuries in the accident. Anambulance took the baby to Cottage, but shesuffered only minor injuries.

After the accident, authorities shut downthe freeway for several hours. County fire-

fighters managed to put out the truck fire.While working to control it, firefighters dis-covered diesel leaking from the truck’sengines into the creek.

A hazardous materials team came in fromSanta Barbara and began to clean up the dieselfrom the creek. County fire officials said thatgallons of diesel had leaked into the creek.

A toxicology report later revealed thatAllison had been on methamphetamine at thetime of the crash and is believed to be thecause.

“However, one-sided pressure can’t help inseeking a proper settlement of the Syrianissue,” it wrote. Chinese Vice Foreign MinisterZhai Jun arrives in Syria on Friday as part ofBeijing’s own diplomatic efforts to end the cri-sis.

Earlier this week, Arab countries rejectedproposed Russian amendments to the resolu-tion that would have sought to blame Syria’sgovernment and opposition equally for the vio-lence.

settlement between the U.S. government andfive major banks last week.

The banks have never formally admittedany wrongdoing. A Wells Fargo spokesmansaid, “We have acknowledged we didn’talways follow our policies in the foreclosureprocess. We found some areas where therewere deficiencies in our process.”

It is expected that the $25 billion settlementwill include no admission of wrongdoing bythe banks.

DEAR GEORGE: According toWikipedia, curiosity is an emotion related tonatural inquisitive behavior.

Wikipedia also says that apes, cats, fish,reptiles, even insects have been observedexhibiting “curiosity.” Curiosity is a finething when we are wondering about the solarsystem, if chicken’s have lips and who is JohnGalt but thinking that a once or twice a week“something” means “having something bet-ter” isn’t curiosity- it’s just plain immature (Iam sorry if that wasn’t nice, but someone hadto say it).

The fact that you can be intrigued bysomeone is a big loud shout out to do some-thing, but not necessarily the something thatyou are thinking about. Not without somepretty intensive soul searching at any rate andan equal measure of being honest with youand yours before the cat has to die.

Since you are curious George, know thatexploring and implementing values is a lotlike playing cards.

Depending on the hand dealt, one mustwisely decide what to put into play in order towin and to know when a wild card should bethrown back on the table for a hand that hasthe best chance of winning the evening-notjust the round.

My definition of winning at life is leavingthis world better than you found it and honor-ing the contracts that one has chosen toaccept, in your case-the contract of better orworse or something in the middle.

Since you care about being honest knowthat living with honor and integrity meansthat values have been established after the

laborious task of said soul search-ing.

It’s a rather personal journey thatis best taken alone to make sure thatthat the intent is as clean and as trueas the eventual outcome.

What is the highest good when Iam thinking beyond myself? Howdo I know I am being as authenticas I can? Have I really given thismarriage my best? Does this meanone is always honest as the day islong?

Not always since often the highest good isin being kind. For example telling a smallchild that they shouldn’t give up their day jobin favor of making MORE badly paintedrocks isn’t nice. It could be true, but in thecontext of that little scenario, nice trumpstruth every time.

Making your wife aware just how you arebeing educated at Adult Ed is the honest thingto do. That you have realized you need moreand want to explore that- with her is the hon-est and kind thing to do. See how that handplays out before you jump to the conclusionthat you need to change tables to have a bet-ter time.
