I.V. Foot Patrol hit withNew Year’s Day bomb

BY NICK C. TONKINDAILY SOUND STAFF WRITER

In the third assault in two months torock the Isla Vista community, an arson-ist apparently firebombed the Isla VistaFoot Patrol office late Sunday night.Someone threw a device, “similar to a

Molotov cocktail,” which hit the build-ing around 11:40 p.m, according to theSanta Barbara County Sheriff’sDepartment.

Authorities said there were peopleinside the building, 6504 Trigo Road, atthe time of the attack, but the bomb did-n’t injure anyone. The building sustained only minor

damage.Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Brad McVay

said the Sheriff’s office would launch aninvestigation — later in the week, aftersupport staff return from holiday fur-lough.

The building serves as headquartersfor law enforcement in one of the mostdensely populated unincorporated areasof the county. It also provides a center for communi-

ty relations between the Sheriff’s officeand Isla Vista’s substantial student popu-lation.This marks the second attack on the

building in less than three months. On

searching the vehicle because there were severaluncapped needles near the car seats. He added,“I’m not a bad guy, I just have a problem.”Both men were arrested for possession and

NEWS IN BRIEFPolice arrest L.A. arson suspectPolice arrested a man on Monday in connection with a wave

of 53 arson fires targeting cars and structures, which causedmore than $2 million in damages and left nerves in the second-largest U.S. city badly frayed.Police declined to identify the man but said he was taken into

custody in Hollywood early Monday morning after a sheriff'sdeputy spotted him driving a van similar to one being sought inconnection with the fires.Los Angeles City Fire Department Captain Jamie Moore said

at a press briefing the suspect resembled a "person of interest"caught on surveillance videotape near several of the arsons. That person was described by police as a male with a light

complexion wearing dark clothing and a ponytail.Authorities declined to discuss the arrest in further detail but

said they would release more information at a late-afternoonpress conference.

Navy pilots killed in San DiegoTwo Navy pilots were among four people killed in an appar-

ent New Years Day murder-suicide on the wealthy island ofCoronado off the coast of San Diego, officials said on Monday. The two were F/A-18 pilots training at the U.S. Marine Corps

Air Station Miramar, the base said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office initially

posted on its website that the both were male, and both 25 yearsold. The Medical Examiner's information said the third deceasedman was a 31-year-old resident of nearby Chula Vista. The Office later took the information off the website.Authorities in Coronado, a wealthy island enclave off the

coast of San Diego, were called to a condo shortly after 2 a.m.on Sunday to investigate a report of shots fired at the residence, according to the sheriff's department.

Occupiers try to upstage paradeHundreds of anti-Wall Street protesters sought to upstage the

123rd Tournament of Roses parade on Monday but were large-ly confined to the sidelines.Several hundred protesters marched in a "human float" that

followed behind the official parade, unfurling a 250-foot bannerof the constitution and also displayed an approximately 70-footoctopus made of recycled plastic grocery bags."Everything is not coming up roses," one protester's sign

said. Another read, "This is what Democracy looks like."Onlookers were allowed to walk along the parade route

behind the official floats, so the protesters were joined by thou-sands of spectators and even a handful of counter-protesters,one of whom admonished the protesters to "get a job" on hismegaphone.

A Synchronized Approach to Insurance

DEAR READER: I am writingthis letter to thank you for your gen-erous support of the Daily Soundand Montecito Messenger and towish you a happy new year. The New Year offers us each the

opportunity to look back and reflecton the past 12 months. To examineour lives and relationships and re-evaluate our positions in life. We setnew goals or tweak plans to achieveold goals. We resolve to change ourlifestyles; to eat healthier; to exer-cise more; or to quit that bad habitonce and for all. This year, I’m looking at things a bit dif-

ferently. For the past 29 New Years (or atleast the ones I was old enough to knowabout) I have made a New Year’s Resolution. They were all made with the best of inten-tions at heart, however, nearly every singleone failed within the first month. When I sat down to make this year’s

ambiguous promise to myself, I began tothink about all the past devotions and whythey failed. But before I looked back, I decided to take

a look forward. This is a big year for me in many ways:

This newspaper turns 6 years old in March; InApril I will marry the love of my life; andSeptember 2 of this year will mark my 30thBirthday.All of my past resolutions have been about

me and only me. Each and every vow wasmade selfishly for my own benefit. Theynever stuck. This year I am trying something different. I

have three New Year’s resolutions and I made

them all with the notion that myactions can change the lives of oth-ers. My resolutions are:1. To be a better partner to my

future wife by listening better andattempting to understand her on amore spiritual level.2. To be a better employer to the

great men and women who workday-in and day-out to produce theDaily Sound and MontecitoMessenger by being more receptiveto their ideas and more aware of andproactive toward their discontent-ments.

3. To improve my physical health andwellbeing so that I will be around longenough to build a family of my own and con-tinue to provide for the many people whohave come to depend on me over the years. The third one will be by far the most diffi-

cult for me. Over the past six years, buildinga business and growing a relationship hastaken its toll on my physical health.Diet and exercise were always top of my

past New Year’s resolution lists, but theyfailed quickly because I was only thinking ofmyself. I wasn’t thinking about how my poorhealth would impact those around me.Today I am the heaviest I have ever been.

At 292 pounds I have finally realized that theonly way for me to have a long, happy lifewith the woman I love and our future childrenis to dramatically change my way of living.Tomorrow morning I begin a rigorous

exercise and healthy eating program specifi-cally designed for me by local personal train-er Stacey Cooper. Cooper’s program is very

Surf’s up in SBBY NICK C. TONKIN

DAILY SOUND STAFF WRITERSurf’s going up for Santa Barbara this

Thursday. The National Weather Service is predicting

that a storm in the Pacific could send waves ashigh as eight feet Santa Barbara’s way betweenThursday and Saturday.David Sweet, meteorologist for the National

Weather Service, said these “surf events” arecaused by offshore storms that generate swellsthat travel across large expanses of the ocea-nuntil they hit land and are common duringwinter months.Sweet said most surf events in the Pacific

send swells in a northwest direction. Becauseof California’s geography, Santa Barbara’s

coastline is shielded from these waves by PointConception.“Many times Santa Barbara is protected

from high surf events,” Sweet said. But this recent storm in the Central Pacific

kicked off further south than normal, whichmakes swells “refract” around PointConception and sends larger waves towardsthe Santa Barbara coast.“This system was in a place where the

waves generated have better access to theSanta Barbara area,” Sweet said. But Santa Barbara will still be sheltered com-

pared to areas outside of the county. Sweet esti-mates west-facing beaches in parts of Venturaand Los Angeles could see 10-foot waves asearly as today and up to 20 feet later in the week.

Nov. 15th at 7:45 p.m. two Molotovcocktails hit the building, causing minordamage.According to statements from the

Sheriff’s Office in November, the firstcocktail hit the sidewalk near the“Operation Medicine Cabinet” drop box,a county program to provide safe dispos-al of unused medicine. The fire causedminor damage to the box and the stuccowall of the IVFP building. The second shattered the windshield of

a patrol car parked on the curb in front ofthe building, but caused no fire damage.Witnesses reported a suspect dressed

in black toss two Molotov cocktails atthe office before fleeing the scene. Thesheriff’s office later released surveillancethat corroborated witness statements. The day after the November attack,

investigators discovered another sign ofattack — graffiti spray painted on

Snidecor Hall 500 yards away from theoffice. Messages reading, “2 cocktales[sic] 4 IVPD on the home” and “4Brute vs Drunk Sad Kids” had beensprayed on the doors. Deputies said theattack contained the moniker “CrazyIrish.”The incident prompted the FBI to

offer a $5,000 reward for informationleading to the arrest and conviction ofanyone responsible for the attack. It is not known at this time if the two

incidents are related. The investigation is still ongoing and

anyone with any knowledge is urged tocall the Sheriff’s office at 681-4100.
