Optical results

The European Standard EN 379 establishes 4 tests on the optical quality of the auto-darkening filters:

A of these testsccording to the results , grades awarded will be which will be indicated on the CE certificates and must be shown on the filter. From left to right, here are the meanings of each grade:

The first grade which may be 1 or 2 (1 being the best), refers to the optical class:

-1: optical class 1, there is no limitation of use (a maximum of +/-0.06 diopter variation is permitted). -2: optical class 2, limited use only (maximum permitted variation of +/-0.12 diopter).

The second grade, which may be (from best to worst) 1, 2 or 3, refers to the diffraction (angles taken by the light rays through the optics of the ADFs). The more diffraction there is, the less sharp the image perceived by the welder will be.

The third grade is for dark shade homogeneity. Here, the best result is 1 and 3 the worst. The test is done by measuring the dark shade in the four corners of the filter as well as in the middle. The 5 measurements must match.

The fourth grade corresponds to the angle dependence of the LCDs in respect of the viewing angle. All liquid crystals have the distinction that with angle, they become more clear. Digital watches, televisions, monitors, etc... always have an angle of vision beyond which it is not possible to see the image. Due to this physical phenomenon, when looking through an ADF, the welders can observe a darker shade right in front of his eyes getting clearer above and beneath with the increase of the viewing angle. Some manufacturers of ADF have developed liquid crystals with compensation of the angular dependence of the filter so that even when the welder looks up or down, the dark shade stays unchanged. Once more, the best result is 1 and the worst 3. (1 would be for 1 shade maximum variation).
