Hola the ‘Mighty, Electrifying

and Powerful D6’!!!

I hope you have all been vibrant

for service this summer! Time has

been moving so quickly. The first

quarter (May- July) of the Key

Club year has already come to an

end, now we are already in the 2nd

quarter. This simple means that

as officers we need to work fast,

and make more of our key club

experience.

What do you want out of your Key

Club experience this year? What

do you want to achieve at the end

of the year as a club officer, or general member? I encourage

you all to begin pondering upon these questions if you haven’t

started. Have NOT ONLY set club goals, but also have set goals for you as an individual officer of member.

Some of our divisional problems so far have been: Poor

attendance to divisional and district activities, late or non-

receipt of club Secretary’s Monthly Reports and club Bulletin

Editor’s Newsletters. I have also noticed poor communication

among not only club officers, but also officers and myself- I MUST know how your club is doing at all times!!!

Let’s this 2nd quarter work on all the problems that are preventing you from having excellent clubs!

Each club should be focused on building strong clubs by

December, membership growth and getting members excited about DCON.

So, that’s it for now folks! See you next time…

Divisional Project #3- Primary School Beautification Project REPORT

On Saturday, September 1st our last divisional project to close off the summer was held at the

Water Ford Primary in Portmore, St. Catherine. Clubs in D6 which participated in the project were:

Hillel High, Immaculate High, Merl Grove High, Queens High, St. Andrews High, Holy Childhood,

Meadowbrook High, and Pen Wood High! On the project day, Key Clubbers from St. Andrews High,

Immaculate High and Pen Wood High, all came out for a day of service to assist a school in need.

The project had 3 parts: collection and presentation of donations of books, stationeries, toiletries

and food for the school, cleaning up of the school grounds and painting of a grade 1 classroom and a

Tree Planting Exercise.

The project which also fell under the Major Emphasis and its service initiative: Children their

future our focus- live to learn, highlighted key clubbers demonstrating their passion for service, and care

towards this country’s future by assisting our nation’s children in any way possible, as children ARE the

future!

I would like to thank all the Key Clubs and Key Clubbers who supported the project, and special

thanks the Kiwanians: DLG Gerthlyn Holman, DP

Leroy Johnson and Zone Coordinator Candice Neil

for their great support towards the project. Without

you all, none of this would have been possible!

Keys to success: Communication

Managers merely push other people to accomplish a task or get work done; while leaders, however, share a unique vision with people and supply the necessary values and skills to move people to really want to accomplish things; leaders touch people emotionally. Here are some tips to guide you on your journey to becoming a better leader and manager in your club, school and community.

Make sure you are aware of proper etiquette, especially amongst members, other officers and adults.

Ethics is learning what is right and wrong, and doing the right thing. It plays a huge role in both the club as well as your club’s image in this organization.

Strong public speaking abilities will help you get the message across to larger groups.

Keep your members and other officers up-to-date with things they need to know.

Don’t be shady with your team.

Be aware of not only your body language but everyone else’s as well.

Improve your listening skills. Listen attentively, not only to adults, and other officers but to the needs of your members.

Speak clearly and concisely.

Develop your ability to negotiate.

Make sure to keep your cool when dealing with difficult situations.

D6 COMMITTEES & CLUB REPORT

This year in an effort to ensure the smooth running and success of the division and get

members more involved, Division 6 will be having 3 divisional committees. They are: Projects,

Fundraising and Social Committee. One member from each school is expected to join each

committee, take part in committee meetings and the planning of divisional events, represent the

views of their club at meetings and relay information from meetings to their club. These persons

cannot be club officers. I need club officers to help in the selection of these persons; I need 1

general member for each committee from each club by Sept 15th.

The Club Report is a chart which shows which clubs I have noted in my files to have received MRFs and Newsletters for. It is to help motivate clubs to work hard, or continue the good work.

Page 12: D6 KEY LINK| AUGUST 2012

St. Andrew High School Girls!

Hi! I’m Ronique Dennis. I love to smile and see other people happy. I’m easy going and hard working.

My goal for my club is to achieve the same high recognition of our hard work at the district and

international level as last key club year. Since I joined & fell in love with Key Club, it has motivated me

to work harder, break out of my shell & become a leader in my club & still handle my school work, gave

me a chance to inspire my fellow key clubbers and has taught me to appreciate the little things in life.

Hi! I’m Ashli Daley and I’m 15. This year I want to get the lower scholars’ more actively involved in the

club. Key Club is important to me because it has helped me to realize that there are people out there that

need my help, and it’s the little things that I can do, that make a difference in their lives. Key Club has

really taught me that life doesn't revolve around me and that selfishness will get you nowhere in life.

Hi! I’m Ghian- ajo Martin. I'm extremely fond of books and Comedy movies. My goal for this year is to

make this key club year the most memorable year for my fellow club members and myself. I am

striving to do an excellent job as a Secretary. Key Club is important to me because it’s something I

like to do, and it’s something I know will benefit others in a positive way

Why is Key Club

important to

you…?

Hi! I’m Shadae Bingham. I am a fun jovial person who loves to socialize but is

serious when it comes to getting work done. I plan to work to ensure the steady

security of all that is placed within the treasury. Key club is important to me

because it teaches how to be humble and helps me to realize the joy it brings in

helping and devoting my time to others.

Hey, I’m Roxanne Thomas. I love to have fun, hang out with

friends and try new things; I am very friendly and

hardworking. My main goal for the year is to create something

new and vibrant to the St. Andrew high school key club and

possibly in all the clubs in D6. Key club is important to me

because I was able to make new long lasting friends while

being able to bring service to the world and enjoy doing it.

Page 13: D6 KEY LINK| AUGUST 2012

Hi! I’m Sasha-Gay Crossman. I am a very optimistic and determined individual. My main goal is to build my club to the point that other clubs aspire to become like us. Service is important to me as it is my way of giving back to my school and community, it also me to become a more rounded and helpful and ultimately a better citizen.

Meet the Officers!!!

Merl Grove High School!

Hi! I’m Joelle Blake. I like to socialize, encourage and uplift persons. This year my goal is to continue being the best secretary I can be, and get distinguished secretary at DCON. Service is important to me as it is my small way of helping others who are less fortune.

Hi! I’m Shanice Brown. I want to become a pathologist. As an officer I intend to continue building the clubs legacy by enforcing the rules and making sure enough funds are made to make out club successful. Service is important to me because there are others in the world who are not privileged, so in doing service it gives me a great sense of accomplishment.

Hey, I’m Katherina Johnson. I’m very artistic and I have a personality you will always remember. My goal for this yr is to assist my fellow board members to the best of my ability in attaining success through lending a hand. To me, service means showing someone you care, that they ate not forgotten. It’s important as it betters my character, and helps me see that life shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Hi! I’m Joneal Crawford. I am a fun- sized chica, as we all know big things come in small packages. My main goal for the year is to increase membership by at least 50%. Service is important to me, as it is my initiative to help make my "home, school and community" a better environment for future generations.

Why is service

important to

you…?

Page 14: D6 KEY LINK| AUGUST 2012

In 34 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth

into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated,

painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills

mothers too.

MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during

childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health

care.

Yes! MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a 60-cent immunization protect mothers, who then pass

on the immunity to their future babies. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

UNICEF has helped to successfully eliminate MNT in many countries. But in 34 countries in Africa, Asia,

Europe and North America, it still strikes babies and mothers who have little or no access to health care — either

because they are poor, live in remote areas or are caught in humanitarian emergencies. More funds and resources

are needed to reach all babies and mothers at risk.

More than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of

skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

It is unacceptable that innocent newborns and their mothers suffer and die from MNT when it can be prevented so easily. This is also an

amazing opportunity to reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with lifesaving health care. Developing delivery systems for MNT

vaccines will blaze a trail to provide additional desperately needed services to these marginalized families.

WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE?

“There is a child out there, just like you, who will never get a chance of having a future…”
