Executive Summary

This document defines the dissemination objectives for the Mont-Blanc 2 project, as well as the different targets for all its activities, the dissemination tools, the interaction with similar projects, its activities to be done during the Mont-Blanc project, and the policy used to disseminate the results.

The aim of this document is to define the strategy for disseminating the project results taking into account the big social impact that this project will have on society. This plan intends to raise awareness and interest in the developed technologies and solutions among the target groups such as the users, the scientific community, the IT industry and the general public. The strong presence of leading research HPC institutions ensures the wider dissemination potential through scientific channels, and the industrial partners will focus more on the exploitation and technology transfer activities. Most of the results will be published via academic and industrial channels by submitting scientific papers, and by holding workshops, courses and tutorials related to the new technologies.

1 Introduction

The main purpose of the Dissemination and Exploitation work package (WP2) is to maximise the visibility of the project and to support the partners and scientists involved for dissemination purposes, as well as to collaborate with related EU projects that might benefit from this project’s results. This document presents the dissemination tools, communication activities and press strategy for the Mont-Blanc project.

2 General objectives

The purpose is: - to consolidate the relationships between the project and specific target audiences

(further defined in this document), - to ensure their understanding of its progress and achievements, - to disseminate its results, products and services created by the project.

There are also specific objectives that are:

- To continue to build awareness of the project through the communication campaign - To reach additional key stakeholders in new sectors (mobile phones and tablets) using

appropriate communication channels, as well as to maintain contacts realized during the Mont-Blanc project

- To continue liaising with other Exascale initiatives worldwide with the aim to position Europe as innovation leader in the Exascale race

- To ensure the collaboration with related industry from HPC and other related markets (mobile, IT, etc.)

2.1 Target audience

This section lists the same target groups of the Mont-Blanc project, and also includes some new ones. In particular, the extension of this project should be able to attract the attention of the following groups: - Mont-Blanc partners - Mont-Blanc’s industrial users group - Scientific community involved in the topics related to the project, as well as end users of

the possible technology or application to be developed - HPC and IT Industry vendors of: HPC compute accelerators (on-chip integrated GPUs/on-

board integrated accelerators), interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application vendors, etc.

- Industrial HPC Users - Industrial advisers - Industry such as cell phone and mobile devices companies - Politicians and Governmental institutions - Research organizations (like PRACE RI) and the ETP4HPC - Other EU Exascale projects: DEEP, DEEP-ER, CRESTA, Numexas, Exa2CT, Epigram - Related EU and International Projects: PRACE projects, Teraflux, EuroCloud, Green Flash

of the Berkeley’s Laboratory, etc. - Media - General public or society in general

2.2 Dissemination channels

In order to effectively reach the targets for dissemination and to maximize the visibility of the project, a broad spectrum of dissemination channels will be used. The public website is the first contact and plays a central role in dissemination followed by a careful chosen list of events, as well as the rest of the external dissemination tools described in section 4 of this document.

Table 1 – WP2 contacts It is important to highlight that each project partner will be responsible for identifying the contacts associated with their own institutions to be used to spread the results of the projects. Moreover, the WP2 leader will ensure that each partner fulfils the following requirements: - Include a link from the partner’s website to the Mont-Blanc project website by Month 6 - Disseminate the press releases to their own press contacts and in their own language, if

needed - Include at least one article in an organization-related publication (website, newsletter or

other) during the project - Disseminate the promotional material, when necessary

2.4 Industrial User Group Coordinator and Training task leader

In this extension of Mont-Blanc, the WP2 leader will work with the close support of two sub-task leaders: the End-Users Group Coordinator, Marcin Ostasz, and a training task leader, Fermín Sánchez from BSC. Both will contribute significantly in the training plan and the End-Users Group to the project. On the one hand, the End-Users Group Coordinator will work closely with the Dissemination leader in order to define the industrial strategy to be included in this plan. The direct outcome of the End-Users Group, whose aim is to be an advisory body made up of academic and end-users of HPC technologies from areas such as oil, chemistry, finance, defence and pharmaceutical, will be a final report with the conclusions and results (D 2.3). The companies in this group will also benefit from the different resources available in the project. On the other hand, the training subtask leader will coordinate all training courses in the project and analyse their impact, as well as detecting any other training needs. He will also have close contact with the Dissemination leader to report its progress. He will also identify new needs of training needs of the various researchers within the project. He will also upload the training materials to the internal wiki available to all partners involved in the project, as well as establish collaboration with other existing training programmes.

3 Corporate Image

The graphic identity of the first phase of the project will be maintained. The brand had a sustainable impact and, for this reason, in this project extension it will be maintained and no new logo will be created. For this reason, the brand (including the corporate image, brand and style) rules established and defined in the D 2.1 from the Mont-Blanc project from 2011-2013 will be maintained. All guidelines will be included in the internal wiki, as well as the dissemination leader will inform all partners to ensure coherence and consistency. See below the existing corporate image:

3.1 Logo

The main image of the project is the design of the logo, as follows:

Figure 1 – Mont-Blanc logo in two lines The project name –meaning white mountain- refers to the highest mountain in the Alps and in Europe. The logo features various shades of blue: one dark blue taken from the EU flag, Pantone 280 C (C:100% M:72% Y:0% K:18%), the green of the word “Blanc” is PANTONE 320 C (C:85% M:30% Y:25% K:0%) and the gradient lighter blue is the sky due to its altitude, Pantone 292 C (C:20% M:0% Y:0% K:0%). This idea is also emphasized with the symbolic-designed “A” letter. There are two versions of the same logo: one version with the word in two lines and one version in horizontal version, in one single line. Both are valid and can be used, just depending on the space and preference, in each case.

Figure 2 – Mont-Blanc logo in one single line

This logo, approved by all Mont-Blanc partners, should be included in all documentation related to the project and should be ideally used in colour. There is also a black and white version of this logo to be applied with coloured backgrounds, if needed. All versions of this logo can be downloaded in different formats (eps, jpg, png) on the press corner of the website (http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner).

3.2 Font

The Arial font is recommended to be used for all documentation as the corporate font for the project and should be used in all dissemination materials.

Page 8: D2.1 Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation ... · V0.1 First Draft of the D 2.1 ... interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application

3.3 Language

The official language of Mont-Blanc project is British English. However, the dissemination material should be translated into the different partners’ languages, where possible. Each partner should ensure that the materials are adequately translated into the local languages, e.g. in the case of the press releases for the local media. Funding for this is not included in the dissemination budget. The terminology used for both projects will be:

- Internally, the terms Mont-Blanc 1 and 2 can be used - Formally, it is recommended to use in all dissemination materials the terms Mont-Blanc

2011-2013 for the first phase of the project and Mont-Blanc 2013 – 2016 for its extension

3.4 Project Templates

A set of designed templates will be used in the project.

3.4.1 Power Point

The power point template will be used in all presentations done by all partners and will be added onto the Project portal for all partners to be use. This template gives some design guidelines, as well as a general-purpose Mont-Blanc power point content template that can be incorporated into other presentations in order to disseminate the project and its results.

3.4.2 Deliverables

All deliverables will follow a similar look and feel, and structure. As stated in the DOW, this facilitates the reading. The template will be included in the intranet. All public deliverables will be uploaded onto the website under the section “Deliverables”.

3.4.3 Brochure

The existing brochure will be updated including the information of the extension of Mont-Blanc project and will be used as a unique promotional item with both projects.

3.4.4 Publication acknowledgement sentence

All resulting publications (publications, white papers, technical reports, etc.) should include the following sentence: The research leading to these results has received funding from the European

Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under the Mont-

Blanc Project (http://www.montblanc-project.eu), grant agreement n° 610402.

For those publications, that are valid for the transition period while both projects are ongoing, we suggested the partners to add the following sentence including both grant agreement numbers: The research leading to these results has received funding from the European

Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under the Mont-

Blanc Project (http://www.montblanc-project.eu), grant agreement n° 288777 and

610402.

4 External Dissemination tools

The role of the dissemination tools or activities should ensure that the different targets specified above are aware of the Mont-Blanc project and the strategic relevance and impact of this project for Europe. This also includes intensive communication with researchers and industry partners.

4.1 External website

The public website (www.montblanc-project.eu) will play the central role as it’s the most important channel for disseminating information. The project website and its update procedure created on the first phase of the project will be maintained. It might be updated with new content such as new applications or development tools that the extension includes in its work programme.

The update procedure will continue to be maintained as the one defined in D 2.1 from the first phase of the project. The WP2 leader, in collaboration with the dissemination team and task leaders, is the main person responsible for editing the website content, website deliverables, feedback and statistics. The website will probably be the first contact for all targets and will be regularly updated. The website is designed with a Content Management System called Drupal. The Mont-Blanc webpage also uses a visitor statistics monitoring system from Google Analytics. All results will be reported annually in the “Dissemination and Use Report” deliverables. This information will help to improve the content and structure of the site, as well as having more information about the target audience.

Figure 3 – Mont-Blanc’s homepage

4.2 Events

On the one hand, another important dissemination channel will be the attendance and presentations at high-level peer-reviewed conferences in the field of HPC, computer

Page 10: D2.1 Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation ... · V0.1 First Draft of the D 2.1 ... interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application

architecture, supercomputers, etc. Presenting the latest updates of the project at such events, meetings or workshops will be an effective means of involving industry leaders in standards discussions early on. The list of targeted academic/industrial events includes conference and networks of excellence, see tables below. The will be previously announced on the “Events” page and, if necessary, highlighted in the website and disseminated through social media. Furthermore, another task is to organize and provide logistical support of all events or workshops organized by Mont-Blanc. At the end of the project, the organization of a final conference (similar to the EESI final conference) will be considered as well as the organization or research workshops with other Exascale initiatives (see section 8 of this document), as well as any possible events addressed to industry to promote this target.

4.2.2 Networks of Excellence and groups

The network of Excellence is another targeted audience that might organize events that we need to consider. Mont-Blanc will consider all activities that they organize and try to disseminate the project in them. Please find below a list that should be considered: - HiPEAC: European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded

Architecture and Compilation - ARTIST: European research community in Embedded Systems Design - HPC Advisory Council: computing ecosystem that includes best-in-class original equipment

manufacturers (OEMs), strategic technology suppliers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and selected end-users across the entire range of HPC market segments

4.3 Dissemination Pack

4.3.1 General Brochure

The general brochure provides information about bothMont-Blanc projects, its common objectives, scientific applications and its impact or benefit to society. The format of the brochure will be a double-sided A5 sheet, so that interested Project Partners can easily download and print for their own dissemination purposes. It will be distributed in all events or local actions to scientific and industrial contacts defined by each partner. It will also be available on the press corner of the Mont-Blanc website by latest Month 12.

4.3.2 Poster

A general poster template will be designed to be used by all partners by Month 12. Further, a general poster will be designed and include a general description of the project and its aims. It will be used in all events where Mont-Blanc needs to be promoted. The general poster will be done by Month 12, and periodically updated, if needed.

4.3.3 Newsletter

Due to the enormous impact of this project, the existing biannual newsletter (July – December) will be continued in order to update all target audiences about the latest news of the project progress. It will be sent out to all contacts including those in the database collected via the website. In order to increase the database, some merchandising actions will be taken. With regard to the possible contents of this dissemination tool, it will not only be a compilation of news added onto the website (http://www.montblanc-project.eu/news), but it will also include the possibility of adding pictures and articles of some partners. The newsletter has also a section with related European and International projects that Mont-Blanc collaborated with. This newsletter is also promoted via the existing social media channels and drives traffic to the website. All existing newsletters are available on page http://montblanc-project.eu/newsletter .

4.3.4 Promotional material

During the project, various merchandising items will be defined with the aim to increase the contacts’ database of the newsletter, for example. The campaign launched for SC13 attendees with the tactile gloves (see picture below) was quite successful in order to reach the 200 contacts at the database. For this reason, several promotional items will be considered during the project, but always understood to reach any targeted audience.

Page 12: D2.1 Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation ... · V0.1 First Draft of the D 2.1 ... interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application

5 Press Strategy

The first phase of the Mont-Blanc project has been quite active in terms of media presence. The extension of the project will try to maintain the media presence (either with press releases or individual articles in different specialized magazines), always with the aim to attract attention to the project’s progress and its achievements. For this reason, the press strategy will be combined in both projects. Press releases are one of the most effective ways of communicating the existence of the Mont-Blanc project to a specific target audience (general public and related institutions). Press releases attract attention to the project’s progress and its achievements. The idea is to launch yearly a minimum of one press release, but it will be agreed among all partners whenever an important achievement needs to be announced. The procedure for launching a press release should be as follows: The WP2 team (or any other partner informing previously the WP2 leader or the coordinator) prepares a first draft of the press release. This text has to be validated by all partners as well as by the Management Team (WP1). Once these steps have been agreed, all partners have to agree the launch date and time. Each partner has the responsibility of translating the press release from English into their own local language (German, Italian, French and Spanish) and launched it to the local media. This is the procedure to follow to launch all Mont-Blanc press releases.

Page 13: D2.1 Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation ... · V0.1 First Draft of the D 2.1 ... interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application

D2.1Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation Strategy Document Version 1.0

13

All press releases will be included in the Mont-Blanc press corner of the project website (http://www.montblanc-project.eu/press-corner). Furthermore, all partners will have the opportunity to include it on their institutional website (example: BSC will include the press release into the press section of the website: http://www.bsc.es/plantillaA.php?cat_id=44) in order to increase the click rates. The Mont-Blanc website will include all press impacts in all languages. In all Dissemination and Use Reports a list of all media impacts will be provided.

5.1 Social media

The existing social media channels in the first phase are Facebook and Twitter. The aim to use them is to create a community around the project and to drive traffic to the project website, as well as keeping the community informed about the latest updates of the project or related news of the sector. In this project extension a LinkedIn discussion group will be created to target more HPC professionals, researchers, and companies.

Figure 5 – Mont-Blanc LinkedIn group screenshot

6 Training

The training subtask leader plans to organize two courses yearly about the hot topics defined by the project partners. Courses will be top-quality face-to-face trainings in order to improve the technical skills of the attendants. Each course will be organized for a partner with wide expertise in the topic. However, other partners can participate in order to give a complete coverage of the subject. The courses will be structured in two parts: theory and hands-on sessions. The hands-on part will last at least 50% of the course. In principle, each course will have a limited number of attendees depending on its contents. In general, the ratio between teachers and attendants will be lower than 1/10 and the maximum number of attendants for each course should be limited

Page 14: D2.1 Dissemination, Communication and Exploitation ... · V0.1 First Draft of the D 2.1 ... interconnection network systems, system software companies, storage facilities, HPC application

14

to 30. The classroom should have a projector, a screen, power supply sockets for all attendants, Wi-Fi and access to a cluster platform to perform the hands-on exercises. The trainees are expected to bring their own laptop with a SSH client installed. Courses will include sessions on the programming paradigms and results of the Mont-Blanc project. Special tracks on programming models and performance tools will give users a chance to bring their code to the workshop and test on actual hardware with the available tools. This has proven worthwhile in previous workshops. The target group is formed by members of the universities and enterprises participants in the project. In particular, the researchers and developers of the different partners, as well as the members of the end user group. We will also disseminate in a limited way to the PRACE and the PATC experts and invite them individually, if required, as well as the other European Exascale project or initiatives. In order to define the contents of the courses, some training needs for several researchers and developers participants in the project were identified. For this, the training subtask leader contacted all partners and required information about what kind of topics they were interested in and what kind of courses they could teach. According to their answers and previous considerations, the initial training proposal is shown on Table I, as it will be described with more detail in D 2.2.

7 Industrial End User Group (IUG)

As the project produces novel HPC technologies and solutions (i.e. low-energy HPC), it will request the members of the IUG to validate these products and provide feedback to the projects in order to align its objectives, deliverables and address issues such as end-user compatibility. An Industrial End-User Group coordinator has been appointed to coordinate this process. The IUG will consist of representatives from various industries, including (but not limited to) Automotive, Energy, Oil/Gas, Aerospace, Pharmaceutical and Financial. The companies participate in this part of the project will have an opportunity to test their applications on novel architectures. They will also have an opportunity to take part in the official Training plan. Mont-Blanc will provide IUG members with: - Remote access to Mont-Blanc prototype platforms - User support regarding use of the platforms and software environment - Provide user support regarding evaluation of the platforms and performance analysis IUG members are expected to: - Install their software and applications on at least one test platform (we assume IUG

members have the right to use that software; we will provide user isolation so that code and data are not shared across users)

- Perform evaluations on at least one platform in terms of: execution time, scalability, energy consumption

- Use the provided performance analysis tools to detect performance or scalability issues and bottlenecks (Extrae and Paraver, Score-P and Scalasca)

- Attend the yearly IUG meeting and liaise with the IUG coordinator on the above - Report on these evaluations to the consortium in the IUG meeting (this could be a

presentation or a written report; both following a template that we will provide) - IUG members are invited to participate in the Mont-Blanc training program This engagement will take place under the following conditions: - IUG membership is by invitation only. An invitation can be requested to the IUG coordinator

at any time, and the consortium will consider it. IUG membership decision lies in the Mont-Blanc consortium exclusively. IUG members will be notified about membership updates.

- IUG members are encouraged to acknowledge and disseminate their membership in the Mont-Blanc IUG through their website and other dissemination materials and events

- Mont-Blanc commits to undertake best efforts to maintain the security of the system and the installed software and data. Software will be maintained up to date with public releases of security updates, and system configuration will be checked to ensure user isolation.

- Mont-Blanc is granted access and use rights to all the reports, evaluation and test results generated by IUG members. Mont-Blanc consortium retains use rights on the test results even in the case where the IUG member leaves the group.

- Mont-Blanc consortium is not granted access and use to the software and data installed by IUG members.

The currently available platforms include: - 72-node cluster of Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processors, 2 GB of DDR3 per node, 1 GbE

interconnect - 3-node cluster of Dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 processors + ARM Mali-T604 GPU

accelerator, 2 GB of DDR3 per node, 1 GbE interconnect Expected to grow to 50-100 nodes with 4GB of DDR3 before June 2014, and to 800-1000 nodes before October’14 (Mont-Blanc prototype) - 24-node cluster of Quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 processors, 3 GB of DDR3 per node, 1

GbE interconnect The project will be extending these platforms with new ARM-based compute nodes as soon as they become available. The plan is to introduce ARM 64-bit processors, and 10 GbE interconnects. The project supports C, C++, Fortran, OpenMP, MPI, and OpenCL applications. The project encourages IUG members to test the OmpSs programming model and participate in the Mont-Blanc training program. A final report (D 2.3) will be produced based on test results supplied by the IUG and the outcome of the IUG Annual Meeting (probably to take place in conjunction with Training and Face-to-Face meetings).

8 Collaborations with other Exascale initiatives and projects

The collaboration with current (and future) Exascale initiatives of FP7 (DEEP/DEEP-ER, CRESTA, EESI, Numexas, Epigram, Exa2CT, etc.), as well as others related to HPC and the e-Infrastructures area is fundamental for the positioning of Europe as leader in the Exascale race. The aim is to encourage synergies between projects and promote activities of common interest. It will be represented through joint activities such as:

- Collaboration agreements with other Exascale initiatives and other HPC related projects

- Attendance to EU concertation meetings and participate in concertation activities related with HPC and e-Infraestructures area

- Joint dissemination material (videos, brochures, presentations, etc.) - Joint workshops to foster the exchange of technical knowledge between the projects - Joint booth at ISC and SC (under the title “European Exascale projects” or similar) - Promotion of these activities in the different Mont-Blanc dissemination materials such

as the newsletter, website, social media, etc. - Collaboration with the End-Users group and the EUG coordinator

8.1 Collaboration with other European Exascale projects

Since 2013, some dissemination activities have already started with the projects CRESTA and DEEP/DEEP-ER with the organization of a joint workshop in June and a joint booth at SC13. Regular teleconferences every two weeks in order to discuss joint dissemination activities is something that are happening already where Mont-Blanc dissemination WP leader is actively participating. Since 2014, the three new strep projects: Numexas, Epigram, Exa2CT in all our regular dissemination activities and teleconferences were incorporated. This joint dissemination effort will position Europe as a leader in the Exascale era.

8.2 Collaboration with industry

As described in section 7, the End-Users coordinator will lead all relations with industry related to HPC. The outcome of these collaborations will be reported at the Industrial End-Users Group Report (D2.3) planned for month 36. He will also attend any other industry related events that might be of interest to disseminate the Mont-Blanc project.

9 Results’ analysis

All dissemination activities and tasks will be carefully monitored. Quality metrics will be reported annually (D 2.4, D 2.5 and D 2.6). Some quantitative indicators can be the following ones:

- Number of unique website visitors and their location captured by Google Analytics

- Number of subscribers to the newsletters - Number of Mont-Blanc related presentations at public events and events where Mont-

Blanc has been present, i.e. through exhibition booth or dissemination materials - Number of people attending the Mont-Blanc trainings and final conference - Number of press impacts in national and international media - Number of press releases and newsletter - Number of people following Mont-Blanc on social media - Number of social media analysis tools such as Facebook Insights or Google Analytics - Number of collaboration agreements among other partners or joint activities done - Number of companies in the IUG and number of meetings of the IUG
