Mission Background

• You and your crew have been given the task to develop and use your keen piloting skill to rid the Tower and CC buildings of dangerous varmints with 6 Sigma capability

• Your mission, should you accept it, is to use the 15 deliverables to:o Establish a balsa airplane launching stationo Assemble/finalize the design of your airplane to a flight worthy

statuso Determine the key variables to launch and control the airplaneo Launch the plane and have it strike the varminto Develop a PowerPoint Presentation to document your work and

“sell” your capabilities to your customer

Raw Materials

• Balsa airplanes• One launch pad• Rubber bands• One tape measure• One target (standard 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper folded to

stand ~6” high)

Customer Needs

• Use your plane to fly and eradicate (hit) a varmint• The varmint will be located 12-20 feet from the launcher

and +/- 3 feet laterally from the front of the launcher.• Your team must have at least 2 exterminators (pilots)• Accuracy of hitting the varmint is critical if you wish to rid

the area of these dangerous creatures. Hitting the varmint with the plane will earn your team the most points, landing the plane close to the varmint will earn fewer. If the varmint isn’t directly struck, landing distance will be measured as the shortest “line of sight” from the target (see drawing) to the aircraft center of gravity.

Customer Needs (cont’d)

• Any changes from the standard design must be justified based on data

• Planes MUST have: Front wing Stabilizer wing Vertical rudder Fuselage

• Planes CANNOT have: Arresting devices (dart nose, tail hook, incidentally placed foot, etc.) Other un-approved devices

Revenue/COPQ

• Your customer expects to need your services 1500 times/year

• If the plane strikes the Varmint before it touches the ground, you will be paid $1000 for the flight

• If the plane strikes the Varmint after it touches the ground, you will be paid $950

• If the plane does not strike the varmint, but the center of gravity comes to rest within 18” radius of the Varmint center position, you will be paid $800

• If the plane center of gravity comes to rest beyond 18”, you will be paid $800 less $25/inch beyond 18”

Illustration of Customer Landing Criteria

A “kill shot” is defined as hitting the varmint with the nose of the plane. A “wounding shot” is defined as striking the varmint with a wing or after the plane’s first bounce.

Line-of-Sight (radial) distance is the distance from center of target to plane’s center of gravity at it’s final resting point. Center of target is defined as

center of paper that varmint sits upon.

Scoring

• Performance (60 pts.)o Each team will be required to perform ten (10) flights (5 flights at two

distances).o The judge(s) will evaluate each team’s performance with respect to

striking the varmint while the plane is in flight: Nose strike = 10pts Wing strike = 8 pts Nose or wing strike after plane touches the ground = 6 No plane-varmint contact, but plane center of gravity comes to rest within 12”

of varmint = 3 No plane-varmint contact, plane center of gravity comes to rest more than

12” of varmint = 0o Points will be adjusted to a maximum of 60 relative to other team’s

performance

Scoring (cont’d)

• Presentation (30 pts.)o Demonstration of the 15 Deliverable DMAGIC process

improvement roadmap. (15 points)o Demonstration of competency in using the DMAGIC tools. (15

points)

Page 13: D12 Airplane DMAGIC Project

Scoring (cont’d)

• Team Involvement (10 pts.)o Full team involvemento Spirit and ability to have FUN while ‘working’o Interest Level

• Your customer(s) will specify the contest flying distances at the start of the competition
