Dungay Dads Jam Night Friday 15 June Last year the Dungay Dads group successfully got together to rock out to music and connect with each other in a supportive and friendly environment. As Dads we understand the businesses of life, family and juggling work commitments and the impact this has on our wellbeing and energy levels. The Dungay Dads Jam night is for you to stop for a couple of hours in a relaxed and supportive setting to talk to other blokes, while listening to or playing music. There will be man food to eat while you enjoy a cold one or two. A note will be sent home to RSVP for the event. Thank you to all the mums for helping to get dads here on this night. GYMNASTICS Thursday 31 May Gymnastics will continue this Thursday. Please make sure your child has the correct clothing to participate Thank you to the parents who have provide feedback about this whole school PD/H/PE program. DUNGAY PS ‘BIG DAY OUT’ Celebrating 125 years We have a name for our event – Dungay PS ‘Big Day Out’ – Celebrating 125 years. Kim Baker has worked hard to kick this event off and is slowly building a strong team of parents around her. Last week we sent out a list with roles and responsibilities. We would love to have you part of this exciting team. Please contact Kim or myself if you can help out in anyway. SCHOOL SHADES At Dungay we are dedicated to ensuring that our students have healthy eyes protected from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Children's eyes are unable to block as much UV radiation as adult's eyes, making children's eyes more susceptible to the damage caused by UV rays. Long-term health benefits of protective eyewear: The damage caused by UV rays is cumulative. Wearing sunglasses from teen years or adulthood does not compensate for a lack of eye protection as a child. DUNGAY PUBLIC SCHOOL

Research shows clear links that exposure to ultraviolet rays as a child predisposes to developing eye diseases including: cataracts,

macular degeneration, pterygium, photokeratitis and skin cancer of the eyelid and eye area.

School Shades will block 99% of ultraviolet rays to children's eyes

School Shades is Australia's leading supplier of quality UV protective sunglasses to primary school aged students. With this newsletter please find attached an order form if you wish for your child to have healthy eyes. Please note it is not compulsory for your child to wear these

sunglasses.

A WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS—NOT TO BE MISSED! Safe on Social Media

Save the date: Tuesday 19 June 2018 From 6 - 7pm Wollumbin HS library

Parents do you know if your child is safe on social media? Are you safe on social media? Last year at Dungay PS our school ran a highly successful Safe on Social presentation. Safe on Social Media is giving a range of age-appropriate presentations at Wollumbin High on Tuesday 19 June funded by our P&C. Safe on Social director Kirra Pendergast works with schools, in Australia and internationally, and businesses with a focus on social media safety and welfare. Her presentations are powerful, punchy and incredibly thought-provoking. She will have you racing home to lock down your privacy settings, turn off your location settings,

delete a few apps and reconsider what and how you post online.

Parents are invited to attend the free evening session from 6-7 p.m. This session will cover content that is not appropriate for younger

people and hence they cannot be admitted – the session is strictly for parents.

Safe on Social presentations are inspiring, empowering and completely current. As a parent, you are encouraged to be proactive in understanding how to use social media in a positive way and protect yourself online. You will also have a clearer understanding of what your children are doing online and will be better equipped to have open and honest discussions about keeping them safe. Do not miss this

memorable event – it will change your online habits forever.

Have a great week.

Purpose: This page is designed to help you to teach our students become better mathematicians. Maths is the world’s

universal language. No matter where you are in the world you can communicate through numbers.

FRACTIONS

Early Years Fractions In the early grades children will learn about halving numbers. This will mainly be focused around numbers 0-20,

but they’ll also learn to divide specific large numbers (for example, they might be able to tell you that half of 100

is 50, or that half of 200 is 100).

The best way to show children halving, is to actually give them an even number of objects (for example:

sweets, pasta shapes or counters). Ask them to divide the group into two groups of the same number. They

may not be sure of how to do this, so you may need to draw two big circles on a piece of paper and show them

how to share the objects, one by one, into the two circles.

Children will also learn to find quarters of shapes or sets of objects. You can help your child with this by giving

them various shapes (circle, rectangle and square) and asking them to divide them into quarters and then colour one quarter. Use mealtimes

as an opportunity to practise recognising halves and quarters, too. Could you get them to divide a pizza or cake into quarters and then give

one quarter to someone? Remember to point out that one quarter is 'one piece out of four' and is written like this: 1/4.

Middle Years Fractions In the middle years children start to learn about trickier fractions, such as thirds and fifths. They’ll be getting

more practice at writing fractions out in the correct format and they’ll be asked to colour in or mark out fractions

of shapes.

You can help them by giving them a shape, for example a circle, and asking them to divide it into fifths. Now

give them a fraction such as: 3/5. Ask them to shade in this fraction on the circle. Then give them a rectangle

and ask them to divide it into thirds. Ask them to shade 1/3. You could also ask them to tell you what fraction is

un-shaded. They will need lots of practice in writing the fractions down and saying them out loud.

Children in middle years will need to work out how to find fractions of amounts, for example: 1/3 of 12, 1/4 of 16, etc. Again, using small

objects as counters will really help them with this. If they need to find 1/5 of 15, get them to count out 15 objects. Explain that because they are

finding 1/5, they need to divide the objects into five equal groups. You could draw 5 circles on a piece of paper to help them with this. Once

they have done this, explain to them that each circle contains a fifth of 15 (3). Once they have got the hang of this, they will need to start using

mental division for working out these kinds of questions (for example: 1/4 of 20 is the same as 20 ÷ 4, which equals 5).

Senior Years Fractions In the Senior Years, they will start to relate fractions to decimals and

percentages. An empty hundred number square really helps with this. Ask

your child to colour half the squares. Explain to them that they have coloured

1/2, but they have also coloured 50/100. We write this in decimal form as 0.5.

Encourage them to colour 1/4 and explain that this is 25/100 or 0.25. You can

then go onto explain to them that 25% is the same as one quarter, 50% is the

same as one half and 75% is the same as three quarters.

Safe on Social Media

How to delete an Instagram account It’s now very easy to open multiple Instagram accounts, Instagram allows for up to five accounts to be managed at any one time. What is not as easy is deleting any of these accounts at a later date. Instagram has been a bit tricky with this process. It has simplified your ability to remove an account from your particular device by logging out of it, but this isn’t deleting the account. It has provided you with the ability to deactivate/disable your account with the option of reactivating it later, but this isn’t deletion either. To add to the fun, Instagram claims it will be impossible to resurrect data from your account, and your username can never be recycled to anyone again (even you). They don’t want you to go. It can be permanently deleted, it just takes a few steps, and looking outside of the app.

What you need to do to You need to log onto the Instagram website via computer or a mobile browser – you can NOT delete an account through the Instagram app.

What will deletion mean Photographs, followers, likes, location history, your username. All these things will be permanently gone. Should you try to rejoin at a later date – your username will be inaccessible to you or anyone else – it cannot be recycled. Instagram claims it cannot resurrect this deleted material at a later date. Gone is gone.

You have options Option A Take a break – deactivate and temporarily disable your account. Option B I’m done – this needs to go. Option A - How to temporarily disable an Instagram account: 1. Use a browser to go to Instagram.com (you can’t do it from the application). 2. Log in. 3. Click on the profile button in the top right corner. 4. Next to your profile picture and user name, select “Edit Profile”. 5. Scroll down and select the “Temporarily disable my account” link. 6. Select a reason why you are disabling your account. 7. Re-enter your password. 8. Click on the button that says “Temporarily Disable Account”.

9. To reactivate the account, simply log back into it.

Option B - How to delete an Instagram account (permanently) 1. From a browser, go to Instagram’s dedicated page for deleting accounts, do this by going to Instagram SUPPORT. 2. If you are not logged in, you will be asked to do so, then go to Manage Your Account. 3. Select Delete Your Account. 4. Choose How do I delete my account. 5. You will then see this page. Click on the link shown circled here, which will take you to the Delete Your Account page. 6. Select your reason for deleting the account. These are listed in the second screen shot below. Again, Instagram will attempt to steer you in the direction of disabling your account. Remain strong and continue on the deletion path. 7. Re-enter your password. 8. Select the red button stating: “Permanently delete my account”. 9. Your account is now gone.

10. Congratulations.
