"For them. For each other."
Dear Fellow Lions,
It is the time of year for clichés, gluttony and Boney M songs.
My personal opinion has always been that too much is being made of this time of
year. I thought that love, peace and fellowship should be something to be celebrated
and lived every day and not just over Christmas time. Especially by the very special
people who make up the Lions family.
Tanja has a very different idea. She loves this time of year with colour, light, corny
songs and goodwill everywhere. And she goes out of her way to make it special for
friends and family.
I came to the realization that people like Tanja, who view this time as special and
worth celebrating, are actually right. Yes, we should have compassion with our fel-
low men every day, but we also need to remind ourselves that passion and compas-
sion are not just ordinary traits. It is the reserve of a
certain kind of person and they are the ones being
honoured through the Christmas tradition. Songs and
all.
Some of you might know that I am an avid reader.
My thought for this month comes from the book I’m
currently reading, Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather: The
phrase “Someone ought to do something” is not, by
itself, a useful one. People who use it seldom add the
rider “and that someone is me.”
Love and Peace to you and your loved ones.

Greensleeves Children’s Home is a place of safety for abandoned children, situated on a farm outside East London.
To save on travelling costs education for the junior scholars is provided on the premises.

Gonubie Superspar have a system of charity bins which allows the public to choose who they want to support and in so doing drop their till slips into the appropriate bin. We have been privileged to have a bin there for many years and when we request a voucher it is tallied up - imagine our surprise when we recently received enough mon-ey to cover the costs of our senior citizen tea - thank you Gonubie Superspar!!
Handing out the voucher to Gonubie Lions is Assistant Store Manager Bradley Riaan Crous to President Margie du Toit and Lion Jenny Brindle
Our annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party was held on Saturday 10 December and attended by 65 local residents,
many who do not often have the
opportunity of dressing
up and going out.

Supporting our community
Lions from Gonubie and Port Rex recently attended the year end concert of the McClelland Adult Centre for Intellectually Impaired Adults, which affords residents the opportunity to develop to their maximum potential in a safe and protected environment whilst exercising their fundamental right to live with dignity.
Their show “Under the Sea" was most entertaining with the choir singing 26 songs before interval and another 26 during the second half, items included Under the Board-walk, The Dock of the Bay, Pearly Shells and Yellow Submarine. Residents thoroughly enjoyed performing to a full house.
We all had a lovely evening, thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and good fellowship whilst supporting a very good cause.

Lion Rally 2018 celebrates 25th Year
The Club celebrated the 25th Lion Rally in Cradock which was described as one of the best ever held since inception.
George Cox from the Prophecy Riders suggested, made and presented a 25 year attendance Lions Rally shield to four of the bikers who have never missed a Lion Rally for “riding with the pride of the Eastern Cape” con-firmed Lion Rally Convener Bokkie. Over the past few years the Rally was disrupted by non supply of both electricity and water from the local Municipality. This year the effect of load shedding ag-gravated the situation but the Lion Rally Organizers were prepared by hiring a generator that ensured lim-ited disruption when “the lights went out”.
Left: Lion Denis had another back-up plan
Feedback provided confirmed a decrease in attendance but both social media and bikers in attendance verified that the 25th Lion Rally far exceeded expectations in-cluding addressing the shortcomings of the past three years stated Lion Rally Con-vener Bokkie.

Santa Christmas Drive for the youth
The Uitenhage Lioness Branch Club of the Uitenhage Lions Club hosted a “Santa Drive” in the Dr Braun, Eric Dodd and De Mist suburbs of Uiten-hage on 16 December 2018.
This part of the UD Community con-sists of those who are unemployed or are totally reliant on SASSA grants. The Santa Drive included donations of sweet packs and desperately needed school stationary boxes of rulers, eras-ers, pencils, coloring pencils, pencil sharpeners and blue/black pens.
The Project took place on the V-E-K De Mist church with over 250 donations handed out to the youth and was a ma-jor success

Recently I was given some OLD newsletters ( 1999—2000) from this district and
looked for NEW ideas—things haven't changed in the last 20 years as you will see
from this article below….
What’s in it For You!
There has much been said about the obligations of a Lion to the Club and the Club to the Community. Little is said about what a Lions Club does for the members.
A Club affords its members:
A feeling of belonging to something worthwhile
A sense of pride in being part of the greatest service club organisation in the world
The joy of joining other Lions in completing an activity or helping those who need assistance
Leadership training
Big dividends in good friendship
