Sedgefield Lions Club -
We have had a very cold winter this year in Sedgefield (I think I say that
every year ….. it’s possibly the older I get………) and it has been
sometimes a bit of a struggle to get people motivated (especially myself)
to move away from their log fires out into the cold, but manage we did!
1) The Living Corner Stone Home for Alzheimer’s residents had a fabulous sing along evening in the town hall. Sedgefield Lions supported them by taking three tables for the evening. Our Lions are also involved in the daily running of the three homes, with Sister Val Patrick (past President) being in charge of one of the homes and administering the medication. Volunteers from our club have now also become involved in delivering of the food from the main kitchen to the house which is quite a distance away and proved too far for the staff to walk to carry the meals. Lion Quinta Banghart (ex Potchefstroom) is doing her care givers gift packs every month which is such a delight to them and so much appreciated. Lion Quinta’s attention to detail and personal touch makes these gifts very special.
2) “My Treat” – our Lions members, after a special invitation, went to a local coffee shop where owner Ria, Fijnbos Coffee Shop and Heidi Sonnekus, Journalist from Eden Express explained the “My Treat” concept to us. For each coffee, tea, cake or whatever your choice from the menu, you have an option to donate an additional amount either towards a cup of coffee or a mug of soup and a roll. This is an incredible initiative as Ria mentioned that she always has people coming to the coffee shop’s door asking for money – now she can offer them a cup of soup or coffee! A little chalk board in the restaurant show exactly how many soups and coffees are available and how many have been handed over to the needy.
3) Induction dinner - Sedgefield decided to have a combined induction dinner for two new incoming members and for the President. This was a very special evening with most of our member’s present and invited guests from Knysna Lions, President Rhoda, Secretary Olwen and Lion Tremayne Toms and Incoming President Elect, Rick Sutton and Lion Pauline from George Lions. Incoming Zone Chair and President Zwaai did the induction of new President Debbie Olivier, who promptly then took on her duty as new President and inducted the two new members, Bonita Noeth and Shelley van Eden. Thank you to Lion Mel Bartlett for being such a great MC on the evening, us inductees and their sponsors all had a wonderful time, as did all those present. Lion Quinta also received a badge via Potchefstroom Lions, a silver pin for encouraging membership.
4) Knysna Oyster Festival Cycle Race – YES – the weekend of snow all through the Western Cape – 5 July, we headed for the hills and the woods to do our marshalling for the yearly very successful Oyster Cycle Race. Thanks to the marshals who braved the elements, and to those who brought in re-enforcements to braai and cook up a storm for you ….. Watch this space, next time you will be split and put with the girls!!!

FOUR DEGREES CELSIUS
The “Winter Bash” is a Project that is held when autumn welcomes winter
accompanied by the coldest night of the year that coincides with the months of
June or July each year.
Alida Davis of the Underprivileged Children’s Ministry (the Ministry) and her
helpers departed at 03h00 last Saturday morning past to visit the “children of
the streets”. The time is important as the “flight or fight” people of our
community are at peace. They are overseen by their “guards” who take turns
to keep a watchful eye for threats that include their constant companions of
hunger and the cold weather that is the ultimate threat.
The Ministry and helpers dished out hot meals, blankets and clothing to both
the elderly and mainly the very young. In many cases these included children
under six whose roof consists of the stars and their beds a pavement. As
helpers we all noticed that Alida was known to all the “flight or fight” children
of the community who welcomed her into their “home with no walls”.
The Ministry serves approximately 3 000 people per month with food and
clothing and in turn is totally dependent on the Community and local Business
for donations and assistance. This is the eighth year that Alida and her husband
Johan have reached out to the homeless and those who lack shelter and
warmth.
The Ministry wishes to thank her helpers that included Ubuntu Community
Development Solutions (UCDS) and Women in Business who together organise
the highly successful Uitenhage Market. Their respective objectives support all
aspects of socio-economic development that contribute to the uplifting and
beautifying of our hometown. Also assisting with the Project included the
three Service providers Clubs namely the Uitenhage 14 Round Table, Rotary
Club of Uitenhage South and the Uitenhage Lions Club who all provide a
service to the local Community. Also a special word of thank you to Jacky Sharp
of the Willow Dam Garden Centre in Uitenhage whose presence contributed to
a easing the plight ofthose in need on the night of Four degrees Celsius.
For her dedication to caring for the poor in her community over an extended
period of 33 years Alida is the proud recipient of the The Herald/GM Citizen of
the Year Award for 2013.
Please contact Alida on Cell 082 736 7500 should you or any other Business
wish to make a donation of food or clothing to the Ministry which will
contribute to the upliftment of those in need.
Six Lion members, five hair dressers and five others paid a visit to Lake Farm
which is a Centre for intellectually challenged adults. The hair dressers
providedover 60 hair cuts while the rest of those present provided the 110
residents with boerewors rolls and chicken wings for their sunday afternoon
meal
Well this is the last District Governors newsletter I will be compiling.
I thank IPDG Herman for affording me this “Challenge”, I must say in
the beginning I was very apprehensive but have enjoyed getting to
know all the Lions members and Clubs through the DG newsletter.
Thank you to all the clubs who have continued to send me articles
and photographs throughout the year please continue to send them
to Lion Debbie Olivier who is the new District Chairperson for the
newsletter and Internal communications and I am sure Lion Debbie
Olivier will enjoy doing the newsletter as much. Lion Debbie’s email
address: [email protected]
I wish DG Carl & Debbie van Blerk a wonderful District Governor year
Remember “With GOD all things are possible”
Yours in Lionism
