Programming a Single Message Voice Output Device

Most single message voice output devices in the classrooms can be identified as Big Macks (5 inches in size) or Little Macks (2 1/2 inches in size). They both come in a variety of surface and base colors and several different versions.

Big Macks (newer and older versions) and Little Macks require one 9V battery for operation. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the device.

A Big/Little Mack provides a one-touch, single message feature for a variety of uses.

The device will play the entire recorded message regardless of repetitive hits.

The activation surface is relatively large (it varies from 2 1/2 inches for a Little Mack to 5 inches for a Big Mack) and is positioned on an angled base for easy activation.

A clear, plastic snap cap may have been provided for your single message device. This provides a clear cover to protect photographs or picture symbols you have placed on top of the device to represent your recorded message.

Once your message has been recorded successfully, choose the photograph or picture symbol to represent your message and place it on the top surface of the device. If you have a snap cap, cover your photograph or picture symbol with the clear cap to protect it.

Implementing a Single Message Voice Output Device

There are a variety of ways a single message device can be implemented into a classroom setting.

The following slides provide suggestions for implementation:

During calendar time, the device can be programmed to say the day of the week, the current weather, or any statement that would give the student the opportunity to participate in the activity.

The intent is not to replace verbal communication but to enhance it.

During work activities, phrases such as “I’m finished” or “I need more” could be programmed to assist the student in communicating needs.

During table activities, the student could be required to ask for what is needed, such as a specific color or glue to complete the activity.

During story time, a repetitive phrase from the story could be programmed on the device so the student could “say” the phrase when appropriate. For example, in the story of The Little Red Hen, the phrase “Not I” or “I will” could be programmed for the student so that they have an opportunity to participate.

During group activities, conversational phrases such as “It’s my turn” or “You go now” could be programmed in an effort to further include the student in the activity.

The device could also be used to make choices during a group activity.

During motor activities, the student could be the person who begins the activity by programming phrases such as “On your mark, get set, go” on the single message voice output device.

During art activities, the student could make choices between colors or request specific items needed to complete activities.

During musical activities, the chorus of a song being sung in class could be programmed so that the student could actively participate in the singing.

The pledge of allegiance or the pledge to the Texas flag could be programmed into the device to give the student the opportunity to actively participate with classmates in reciting the pledge.

Recess would be a good time to record social phrases such as “Way to go” or “That’s awesome” so the student could have an opportunity to communicate with peers.
