I am reading the autobiography of a great hero, Nelson Mandela. His is astory about reconciliation, between black and white, oppressed and oppres-sor; about how great things can happen whenever people of goodwill areprepared to talk and seek peace. However, it is also a book that challengesour prejudices. We are blessed as Christians in believing in a Saviour who reconciles eachand everyone of us to God. This is the gift of Christ's grace, Jesus does allthe reconciling for us, by the cross and his resurrection; it is a one way proc-ess. We simply have to desire grace, to believe in Christ as Saviour in orderto make that reconciliation a reality in our own lives. Perhaps that is why wetend to fall so easily into the trap of thinking of Mandela as the sole sourceof reconciliation in South Africa. We put him on a pedestal, and give him allthe credit for avoiding bloodshed and civil war.Nelson Mandela's own autobiography corrects these misconceptions.1. Mandela was a radical freedom fighter, who supported the armed strug-

gle. (That's a shock!)2. The white South Africans were not monsters! Yes they followed a vile, racist policy of Apartheid, but : a. They have a firm Christian faith. b. They have a deep seated respect for the law and an independent judi-ciary – the foundation of all decency and democracy. In the implementation of oppressive and tyrranical regimes, the South Afri-cans were not even in Kindergarten compared to many so called Westerncivilisations. If Mandela had been a citizen of the Soviet Union or fascist Ger-many, he would have been “eliminated” disappeared off the face of theearth, decades before he could ever have been a thorn in the side of govern-ment; and no one would have batted an eyelid. The leniency and adherenceto law of the South African government was breathtaking. When it came toreconciliation in South Africa it was a two way process. The whites and theblacks had equal distance to travel. The blacks had everything to gain, thewhites had everything to lose. We should salute all those willing to treadthat dangerous path to common ground and peace, even the one time sup-porters of Apartheid.I wonder what it will take to bring reconciliation between Islam and the restof the world, a conflict riddled with prejudice, ignorance and hatred? Per-haps reconciliation might begin when people and leaders on both sides, seeeach other as fellow human beings, all loved by God. We all; ChristianChurches, Islamic Mosques, other faith groups and those with no faith, havea responsibility to begin to walk that path to reconciliation. In human con-flicts both sides are required to move, if there is ever to be a permanentpeace.

"To make peace with an enemy, one must work with that enemy, and theenemy becomes your partner."(Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela p.735)

It is with gratitude and some trepidation that I have accepted theBishop’s invitation to become a Canon of Bangor Cathedral. Thisis something that never even came close to my wildest dreamsbut because it is such an honour and not just for me but for whatwe all do together in this area that I have accepted his generousinvitation. The Installation and Collation Service is to be held onFriday 1st August at the Cathedral.Thank you so much for all the support and the best wishes I’vereceived both in these last few weeks and since taking responsi-bility for these parishes. I look forward, with God’s grace, toworking alongside you all in the years to come.

With love and every blessing to you and yours.

It’s strange to realise that it’s already nearly a month since my ordi-nation as deacon in Bangor Cathedral. The service on 28 June wasthe most wonderful affirmation of the call I have been exploring, onand off, for many years, although my sense of ‘I think this is it!’ onlyfinally came into focus after I moved to Wales early in 2011.The three day pre-ordination retreat at St Beuno’s was excellentpreparation, under the guidance of Bishop Dominic Walker, but I stillhad no idea what to expect at the service itself. As it turned out, when the bishop place his hands on my head, I felt a deep sense ofpeace filling me, a feeling of ‘Everything will be OK.’ There was nosense of being changed into somebody different, but of being bless-ed and strengthened as me, just as I am, to begin the new workthat lies before me.And it’s wonderful to be training for that work with the Revd (Can-on!) Kath in the communities of Machynlleth and the Dyfi valley. Myfirst Sunday was one of warm welcome, with the lovely meal at PlasDolguog, and I am looking forward so much to all that I will learn -and to getting better acquainted with both people and places - overthe coming months.

ORGAN RECITAL

The rain didn’t dampen the spirits on the evening of Friday 4th Julyas a good crowd came together at St Peter’s to listen to the talentsof Mr Alistair Auld at the organ, Ali Greely on the Oboe and HarryJepson on the Clarinet. Their programme included music by J’sBach; Frank Bridge; Cimarosa and Brahms to name but a few. Itwas a friendly and enjoyable evening and we look forward to wel-coming Alistair, Ali and Harry back to St Peter’s in the future.Proceeds from the Recital amounted to £195 to Church funds.

Report of the Ministry Area Council MeetingWednesday 16th July Cemaes

Four issues were discussed.Mrs Jen Evans gave a report on her work in setting up a Pastoral Team forthe Ministry Area. The need for vetting of all volunteers using the DBS sys-tem was emphasised, and it was suggested that team members carry a for-mal identification badge when visiting. The council expressed its thanks to Jen for her her excellent work.

The Reverend Kath Rogers gave a report on the arrangements for the licenc-

ing service with the bishop, on Sunday 27th July, in which many parishion-ers will take part. All are warmly invited to this very special, historicalservice.

The Reverend Roland Barnes gave a report on developments concerning themajor repairs to Darowen Church roof. It is proposed to use the STORMFLEXsystem, a process which will avoid the need to re-slate, and has been ap-proved by the DAC at its last meeting. The meeting agreed to support thisproposal.

The Reverend Roland Barnes presented figures showing how the clergy andother Ministry Area expenses might be apportioned between the 8 churchesof the MA. The figures were calculated based on church's average attend-ance. After discussion the members decided to recommend the figures tothe churches. The figures will be passed on to the treasurers and churchmembers for discussion, before being brought back to the Ministry Area

Council for a final decision to be made on the 15th October. It is planned tointroduce the new formula from the first of January 2015. Until then, exist-ing arrangements will continue. The Diocese is undergoing a review of the Parish Share. The proposal is asfollows :1. The diocese will prepare a budget for the diocese. The money needed tobe raised will then be apportioned to the various synod regions of the dio-cese.2. Each church is asked to prepare a budget reflecting its likely annual in-come and expenses. This figure will reflect the ability of each church to raisemoney to pay the parish share. 3.There will be synod meetings in October in order to try and balance theDiocesan budget requirements with the churches (or synod's) ability to pay. Treasurers are therefore asked to prepare budgets for their churches, try-ing to reflect their most likely incomes and expenses, and to give a pictureof their savings and financial stability for the future. Finally it was decided that from 2015 the ministry area would introduce aClub 100 in order to raise funds for the covering of expenses, as this hasbeen very successful in a number of parishes.

St Peter’s PloddersAugust Walk.

Glaslyn Lake Dylife (5 miles) Saturday 9th August.

Meeting at St Peter’s Church 09:30 hrs we shall then proceed onthe mountain road to Llanidloes. Parking just off the road at the turn-ing to Glaslyn lake. The walk is fairly flat and weather permitting willtake in some of the best views in the area. Packed lunch required.

Our July walk was a little more exacting than our usuall sorties, butthe rewards was well worth it. Looking out over the whole expanceof Cardigan Bay was a sight to behold. It’s an old adage in walkingcircles, that the decent can be as tiring as the ascent, and this wascertainly the case with this walk. Apolpgies to those who thought wewhere in the Himalayas. No pain no gain!!!!!
