The Trend Setter

Diabetes: A Global EpidemicDiabetes has become one of the leading causes of death and

disability in most countries worldwide including India.

Complications from diabetes such as coronary artery and

peripheral vascular disease, stroke, diabetic neuropathy,

amputations, renal failure and blindness are resulting in increased

morbidity, reduced life expectancy and enormous health

expenditure. Diabetes is undoubtedly one of the most challenging st [1]health problems in the 21 century .

India is one of the countries constituting the largest number of

people suffering from diabetes in the world. It is estimated that by

2035, India will have 109.0 million people with diabetes, second to

China which will have 142.7 million diabetics. As documented by

IDF, the estimated diabetes prevalence for 2013 rose to 382

million, representing 8.3% of the world's adult population, with a

prediction that by 2035 the number of people with diabetes will [1]rise to 592 million .

Worldwide, primary care physicians (PCPs) play a major role in

prevention, detection and management of diabetes mellitus in

India. However due to the inherent limitation of undergraduates

training the wherein that of the PCPs to optimally manage diabetes

is limited. Thus there is an urgent need to educate PCPs with the

updated knowledge and skills in managing diabetes for better [2]patient outcome .

Certificate Course in Evidence Based Diabetes Management (CCEBDM)

is well known globally with recognition from International Diabetes

Federation (IDF) aimed at primary care physicians. It is extremely

popular in India with more than 5000 physicians trained from almost

every part of India since its inception in 2010.

It is a uniquely designed, once-a-month, only on Sunday, on-job training

program for primary care physicians. It’s one of its own kind of program

in the world specifically designed to improve the knowledge, skill set and

capacity of primary care physicians in prevention, diagnosis, treatment

and referral of diabetic patients apart from clinical understanding of the

disease for better patient outcome.

CCEBDM aims to deliver an exceptional education to physicians who seek to

improve their own practice and effectiveness in diabetes management and

make significant contributions to the community. Our extensive and ever

expanding network has helped in serving this aim.

Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI)

www.phfi.org

The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is a public private initiative that has collaboratively evolved through consultations with multiple constituencies including Indian and International academia, state and central governments, multi & bi-lateral agencies and civil society groups. PHFI is a response to redress the limited institutional capacity in India for strengthening training, research and policy development in the area of Public Health.

Structured as an independent foundation, PHFI adopts a broad, integrative approach to public health, tailoring its endeavours to Indian conditions and bearing relevance to countries facing similar challenges and concerns. The PHFI focuses on broad dimensions of public health that encompass promotive, preventive and therapeutic services, many of which are frequently lost sight during policy planning as well as in popular understanding.

th thHonorable 14 Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, launched PHFI on 28 March, 2006 at New Delhi. PHFI recognizes the fact that meeting the shortfall of health professionals is imperative to a sustained and holistic response to the public health concerns in the country which in turn requires health care to be addressed not only from the scientific perspective of what works, but also from the social perspective of, who needs it the most.

The CCEBDM is a joint certification by Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), New Delhi and

Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA), Chennai, delivered and implemented by

PHFI and supported by an educational fund from MSD Pharmaceutical Pvt. Ltd., India.

Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA)

http://diabetescourses.in/ or www.drmohansdiabetes.com, www.mdrf.in

Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre (DMDSC) established by Dr. V. Mohan and his late wife Dr. Rema Mohan is one of the largest chain of diabetes centres in the world. It is also a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control as well as an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centre of Education. DMDSC was launched in 1991 with a vision to provide Total Diabetes Care i.e. not only routine treatment of diabetes but also of its various complications. DMDSC is one of the few of its kind in the World to offer such a one- stop comprehensive diabetes treatment facility. Since its inception in 1991, over 3,30,000 diabetic patients have been registered and about 20,000 new patients are added every year. DMDSC currently has 20 branches including one international branch at Muscat in Oman, which help to extend diabetes care to a wider population.

The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), the research wing of Dr. Mohan's Group of Institutions was founded with the vision of providing a world class environment for research in diabetes and its complications and has grown to become Asia’s largest diabetes research centre. Within its short span of existence, MDRF has built up strengths in basic, clinical and epidemiological research. The quality of its research in diabetes and its complications is evidenced by over 800 original publications in reputed peer reviewed journals and text-books.

Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Education Academy is the education wing of Dr. Mohan’s Group of Institutions. It was established with the mission of training doctors and other health care professionals in the management of diabetes and its complications. DMDEA offers a wide range of diabetes courses for doctors and paramedical personnel. It runs two courses with the Public Health Foundation of India, the Certificate Course in Evidence Based Management (CCEBDM) and the Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (CCGDM).
