2. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

1. To provide clear and timely information about the course topic

2. To integrate information from course documents (e.g., text) with information from my professional experience to illustrate how principles and concepts apply outside the classroom.

3. To challenge students to consider perspectives that may differ from their pre-existing opinions or beliefs – both in class (or on-line discussions) and in formal assignments.

4. To sensitize students to the importance of careful consideration of sources and the distinction between peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed literature.

5. I like to begin my courses by listing the number of students from each discipline represented in the class to illustrate the range of perspectives represented (e.g., psycho-social, health care, biological, etc.). From there, an invitation is extended to all students to contribute, to enrich our collective understanding as we consider experiences and findings from each discipline or vocational area. Each class is unique and we build the content based on the foundational facts and principles combined with class discussion (or virtual discussions for DE courses).

6. I design my tests to evaluate knowledge that a student of the topic would be reasonably expected to remember six months after taking the course. This is communicated to students before midterm/exam as a way to guide their preparation. It also conveys my overall philosophy, which is that, upon completion of the course, students should have acquired knowledge and skills that they can actively use rather than simply retain. Central to this goal are:

a. Learning to assess the legitimacy of an argument or position (i.e., becoming critical consumers of information)

b. Mounting an argument of one’s own (identifying and articulating their own beliefs and values)c. Developing respect for the value of empirical evidence (grounding their positions on findings tested against

the null hypothesis – i.e., not assumed to be true without stringent testing)
