C U L T U R A L H U BOLD AND NEW

The major take away apart from design was time management. The trimester was 11 weeks long, so the idea was to start working on the project right from day one and leave nothing for the last moment. Fortunately, by perfect time management I was not only able to finish the project one and a half day before the deadline but also was able to help my colleagues on their project.

GROUND FLOOR SPACE PLAN FIRST FLOOR SPACE PLAN SECOND FLOOR SPACE PLAN

The driving force behind this architectural project was designing a space for people.

The design proposal seek to address two key issues- To incorporate the Melbourne style of architecture.- To cater to the residents of Southbank by providing an urban heart.

Stone and Metal were the two major materials used to represent the old and new style of Architecture.

As this project site is located at Southbank which is a part of Melbourne, the site had to respect the Melbourne style of Architecture. Many people would argue that Melbourne does not have any particular style or character, but when I walked into the streets of Melbourne, I came across several things which are unique to this place and among them, was the concept of the OLD and NEW, which had come from searching for public spaces in the CBD Melbourne and there was no better example than the Federation Square the new built form, which sits in front of St Paul’s Cathedral, which is an old built form.

The primary reason to choose Melbourne is to gain confidence to design a space in one of the major cities in the world. Southbank promenade is a regional tourist attraction and does not provide a local heart to Southbank. The lack of local convenience shopping facilities, services and public gathering spaces and fun places that drive people to Southbank is missing and this project, will be the heart of Southbank and also an end to the long Cultural Precinct spine at the Sturt street, Southbank.

Along with the old and new, Another concept which could not escape was the idea of creating lane ways which was associated with Melbourne. Then the major idea was to infuse these bits of Melbourne into the building so it feels like the building belongs to this place.

The Pedestrian Bridge design has been instigated by one of the Yarra River bridges in Melbourne. The extended parts of the bridge face the AACA building on the one side and the City Link on the other side. The geometry of the Pedestrian Bridge is formed by extending the construction lines from the edge of the AACA building .

The central Plaza caters to two important landmarks of the Southbank: The Promenade and the AACA/Malthouse Theatre.

The series of diagrams establishes Plaza as a part of the residential area along with emphasis to the Promenade and the AACA/ Malthouse Theatre.

22 23CENTRAL LIBRARY FLOOR PLAN

The central library is divided into 2 spaces- book collection and reading spaces, with reference to the sun’s orientation.

The west side of the library receives less sunlight. Hence, the book collection space is located in the western side for the protection of books from

the sunlight and the reading spaces are provided on the Eastern side with abundant natural light penetrating through the windows and the roof.

(Under the guidance of Prof. Richard Tucker )

The major takeaway from this group project was team work and a way to incorporate collective design ideas into one project, which resulted in the success of the project.

My input was towards the design concept , 3d modeling, creating a short movie using Camtasia Studio.02 Group Work - 4

The main concept was to address the various site conditions and to respond by creating appropriate spaces.

THE 3 CORE HORIZONTAL AXIS ON PLAN THE 3 CORE HORIZONTAL AXIS TRANSFERED TO THE VERTICAL PLANE TO DEFINE THE 3 LEVELS

THE VISION WAS TO CREATE SHOPS ON EITHER SIDE IN ORDER TO UTILIZE BOTH THE SPACES AND AT THE SAME TIME CREATE AN INTERESTING SPACE FOR THE CONSUMERS.

SIMILAR VISION IS INCORPORATED ON VARIOUS LEVELS.

The proposed design for South Melbourne Market was addressed in relation to ‘CITIES & SIGNS 3’from the Italo Calvino: Invisible City. It articulates where the stranger enters a space and the journey seems like an adventure.

Although, the stranger strongly thinks that the city in front of him seems disordered in relation to every building is set in a different order, but as soon he enters the city, it is actually well structured in relation to its surrounding context and purpose. The stranger simply has to enjoy the adventure that’s been presented to him.

The concept for the roof design was to incorporate a tensile structure, which shall bring in abundant natural light and also incorporate a feeling of openness to the market space and also to the community.

Apart from that, the long span structure such as this shall allow more central space without any hindrance of the columns or beams to support the structure.

My input was in two aspects of the design. The first one was to come up with an idea to create a circular foot over bridge in between the blocks. The bridge acts not only as a pathway but also an interactive space connecting the blocks to the food court and game zone designed by me which was the second part.

Second part of the Market design was to produce a detail section of the 6 individual blocks in the Master plan, selected during the interim.

In the detail sections emphasis was given to the effects of lighting and shadows and also the interaction of individual block to the other blocks on the site.

(Under the guidance of Chief Architect Mr. Shantanu Chaudhari)

01The work involved design and execution of a nephrology unit of 6000sq.ft area for a heritage building. It was one of the most challenging project as it involved a heritage building and 16 clients as it was a joint venture. The idea was to retain the original structure and yet provide comfort and modern facilities to the patients. After several months of analysis and transformation a palace was converted into a hospital retaining its originality. My input for this project comprised detail working drawings, organizing client meetings, representing the company, dealing with various consultants to finalize the drawings, material selection and periodic supervision from commencement till completion.

Hospital spaces typically make people awfully miserable, seeing your loved ones suffer is not a good feeling. At such agonizing times, a designer plays a very crucial role, along with the doctors and the nurses. The hospital design has to be minimalistic and at the same time provide a transformative healing environment. It has to make the patient feel that they will be treated with empathy.

Having said so, functionality was an important aspect in the design process to achieve a spacious design. There were multiple changes to the design to suit the needs of the patients and also the staff working there. I interacted with the staff and numerous people working there to understand their requirement, which was essential for the success of the unit.

Another important aspect of the design was to retain the elegance of the palace, additional design features such as the moldings on the walls and on the ceiling were added to match the exiting design. LED was used to provide efficient lighting solution without having to lay new electrical lines.

Gachi ( a mixture of sandstone, lime and fiber) was used to resurface worn-out walls. This not only matched the existing surface, but also reduced green house gas emissions.

Hence, we succeeded in creating a flexible, an environmentally responsive and a high standard build, retaining the glory of the palace along with creating a functional, elegant and a comfortable space for the patients.

The work involved design and execution of a 110 Sq.m. Office space. The design intent was to create an interesting work space using asymmetrical shapes.

My input for this project comprised detail design assistance, working drawings, organizing client meetings, representing the company, dealing with various contractors, finalizing materials and periodic supervision from commencement till completion.(Under the guidance of Chief Architect Mr. Shantanu Chaudhari)

The space was transformed from a monotonous office to a luxurious space with the richness of materials and textures. The transformed space had both, privacy and openness to it. Each element from workstations and storage trolleys to suspended ceiling and partitions were given immense thought during the design stage.
