Week 12: Humanistic Techniques

Today you will be on a panel for your selected topic:TPR, Desuggestopedia, or The Silent Way.

While you're waiting for class to start, take out your answers to the panel discussion questions and review what you have written. You may also want to skim through your assigned chapter in the Larsen-Freeman book.•The Silent Way: Chapter 5•Desuggestopedia: Chapter 6•TPR: Chapter 8

Coming In Activity

Upon completion of your studies for Week 12, you should be able to:• Define the three approaches: TPR, Desuggestopedia, and The

Silent Way.

• Describe a typical lesson in a given approach and explain the principles that are demonstrated in the lesson.

• Identify the ways in which the approaches are similar to student-centred learning.

• Show awareness of morning meeting as a means for promoting respect in the classroom.

Objectives

1.Meet in your panels to prepare for the panel discussion

2.Panel presentations on the three approaches: TPR, Desuggestopedia, and The Silent Way

3.Partner work after each presentation to discuss reactions

4.Reflection on morning meetings

Overview of Today’s Class

Task: Prepare for Panel Discussion1. Decide on a group leader who will

keep the group on task. 2. Come to consensus about your answers

to the four questions. 3. Decide who will present the information and how

you will do it. For Question 3, you might choose to act out a lesson rather than describe it. All of the group members should participate in the presentation in some way.

After each panel presentation, turn to apartner and discuss these questions:•How is this technique/approach student-centred?•How is it not student-centred?•How did you rate the technique (5, 3, 0)? Why? If you rated it a 3, which elements would you use in a classroom?

Post-Task Discussion

End-of-Class ReflectionThink for a couple of minutes about the question posed on the Reflection Handout. Then meet with your Wiki team to come to a conclusion.

Your team’s Wiki should include:

• Notes about each of the approaches: TPR, Desuggestopedia, and The Silent Way

• Group conclusion about morning meeting
