2005 Phillips 66 Big 12 TournamentMay 25-29 • SBC Bricktown Ballpark • Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 baseball tournaments are scheduled for Oklahoma City’s SBC Bricktown Ballpark from 2005 to 2007 as the tourneys seek to continue a set of record-breaking attendance and interest numbers. The fi rst eight jousts have set almost annual attendance records while being played at three sites: All-Sports Stadium (capacity: 12,000, 1997), SBC Bricktown Ballpark (13,066, 1998-2001, 2003, 2005-07) and Ameriquest Field in Arlington (49,115, 2002, 2004).

The eight-year total tickets sold count for 104 tournament games is 893,172-a national high for any conference from 1997 to 2004 and an NCAA-best tourney average of just under 112,000 per year.

In 2002 it moved to the largest postseason venue other than football and outdoor track and fi eld in Big 12 history, as Ameriquest Field in Arlington, home of the American League Texas Rangers, set another national record with 150,196 tickets sold for 14 games.

In the two years at Ameriquest Field, the tournament had 275,824 tickets sold for 27 games-an average of 10,216. The Oklahoma City All-Sports Association has provided similar hospitality for 26 consecutive Big Eight and later Phillips 66 Big 12 tournaments from 1976 to 2001 and again in 2003. The 1998 Big 12 Tournament was one of the fi rst major events of national signifi cance after a gala dedication of SBC Bricktown Ballpark and unveiling of a statue of the immortal Mickey Mantle outside the facility in April 1998.

The 1999 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament added another star to the record fan support with a then-conference-tourney-most 129,334 attendance (tickets sold) for 13 games. In 1999 fans also had the opportunity to watch an expanded, eight-team (from the previous six-team jousts in 1997 and 1998) at Oklahoma City. One year after that record turnout, the 2000 Phillips 66 meet had the third-largest turnout in Division I baseball history with 126,482 tickets sold for 14 games.

These followed a previous all-time NCAA mark of 113,108 ticket purchasers at the OKC facility for the 11-game tournament in 1998. The state-of-the-art facility also is the home for the Class AAA Oklahoma RedHawks, NCAA Regional tournaments and numerous NAIA and Oklahoma area amateur tournaments.

In 1997 the initial six-team Big 12 tourney drew a nation’s best total estimated attendance of 56,742 (49,684 paid). The tourney fi eld was expanded from six to eight teams in 1999 to refl ect the addition of

16 schools nationally to the 64-squad (from 48-team) NCAA bracket. FSN has carried all Phillips 66 Big 12 tournament title games as well as 10th “if necessary” contests in the 1997 and 1998 classics at OKC and semifi nal encounters in both 2003 and 2004.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament is a trend-setting event as well as solid success for teams and fans. The Big 12 agreement with Arlington and the Texas Rangers was the fi rst-ever venture between a conference baseball tournament and a Major League Baseball facility on an advance contract basis. It has attracted 85,000-plus fans for seven consecutive years

and in excess of 100,000 fans for seven of its fi rst eight outings.

For baseball ticket information, suites, box seats, sponsorships, and other data about the eight-team Phillips 66 Big 12 postseason tournament, on May 25-29, 2005, please visit the Big 12 website at: www.big12sports.com. For 2005 ticket packages and to be placed on the tickets orders’ list, please contact The Oklahoma City All Sports Association at (405) 236-5000 (website: www.okcallsports.org).

The format consists of four games on Wednesday-Thursday, two games Friday, two-to-four contests Saturday in the two-bracket format, and the tourney championship game on Sunday in a national telecast on Fox Sports Net after two regional telecasts Saturday of Games 11 and 12. The winner of the Sunday battle earns the Big 12’s automatic berth in the 64-team NCAA Regionals.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament will return to the SBC Bricktown Ballpark in 2005. The Big 12 Tourney was held at the ballpark from 1998 to 2001 and 2003, and will host the tournament until 2007.

The Big 12 celebrates the 10-year mark of its founding - Feb. 25, 1994 - and remains dedicated to celebrating the student-athletes, competitive excellence, scholarship, sportsmanship and competitive equity.

The Big 12 was founded on Feb. 25, 1994, when the institutions of the Big Eight Conference and four institutions from the Southwest Conference joined forces in response to the changing landscape of college athletics. These institutions created a league that would encompass seven states, over 42 million people and more than 18 million television households within its geographic footprint.

Building upon traditional rivalries Big 12 member institutions – Baylor University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, the University of Colorado, the University of Kansas, the University of Missouri, the University of Nebraska, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas – created a union that goes beyond athletics to include cooperative efforts among libraries, campus security organizations, Chambers of Commerce, tourism/visitors bureaus, information exchanges, sports medicine associations and campus public information offi ces.

The Big 12, which closes on its fi rst decade of intercollegiate athletics on Aug. 31, 2006, sponsors 21 sports. Its 11 women’s sports consist of basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track, swimming, tennis and wrestling.

The conference conducts championships for 20 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine which teams and/or individuals will represent the Conference in postseason competition. Championship sites for Big 12 events are coordinated through the conference offi ce in conjunction with the league’s championships and awards committee, and administrators. Many of these events have tremendous economic impact on the host city, and competition among municipalities to stage Big 12 Conference championships is fi erce.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12’s philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. In addition the semi-annual Commissioner’s Honor Roll salutes student-athletes who have achieved 3.0 grade-point averages for the previous semester. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 105 scholars have received more than $500,000 in postgraduate fi nancial aid through the fi rst eight years of the program.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the fi eld, in the classroom, or within the community the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game offi cials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

The Big 12 is under the direction of its third commissioner, Kevin L. Weiberg, who took over the reins in December, 1998. Steve Hatchell served as the fi rst commissioner from March 1995 to May, 1998, followed by Dave Martin who was interim commissioner from May to December, 1998.

Under Weiberg’s guidance, the league distributed a record $101 million to its member institutions for the 2003-04 academic year, nearly doubling the fi rst allocation of $54 million in the conference’s inaugural 1996-97 campaign.

Weiberg has also helped lead the Big 12 into additional football bowl agreements and expanded television opportunities for all sports through contracts with ABC/ESPN, FSN, TBS and CSTV.

Since the conference’s inception, 18 Big 12 teams have won NCAA Championships. 10 football squads have played in BCS bowls in the last seven seasons and an unprecedented seven men’s and women’s basketball teams advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past three seasons as the Big 12 continues to make a name for itself among the elite intercollegiate athletic conferences.
