OKOTOKS CULTURE PROGRAM GUIDE3
Inspired to consider how our relationships
are affected by the presence or lack
of materialism in the act of camping,
encampment and entrenchment within
a cross-cultural context, this exhibition
focuses the lens on camp structures, spaces,
mode and act of transport, enjoyment and
motive and time & the claims and use of
the temporary space.
Illusion, reality and the spiritual spaces be-
tween are key elements that link us together
in the ultimate question of, “Why Do We
Camp?” and lead us to consider and discover
the root of our contemporary and historic
nomadic quest, separately… and together.

CAMP is a multimedia visual-arts project
examining the occupancy of temporary
space, identity and contemporary
nomadism through the eyes of indigenous,
and non-indigenous Canadians. Using
installation, painting, photography
and multimedia works, Tanton asks the
question, “Why Do We Camp?” Is it for
access to resources, claims to space, play,
culturally rooted, or the need for a deeper
connection to stillness.
The act of camping, as our recreational
modality, has become a reflection of how
we conduct a relationship with temporal
place and resources in community. We
“camp” politically, corporately, personally
and in our everyday lives. CAMP is a project
by which to surface and awaken insights
and ways of knowing by taking the time
to listen deeply between cultures and art-
forms; and to discover their relationship
to claimed space and resources relative to
diversity and commonality.

At the heart of the matter, the sprawling
Athabasca Tar Sands complex has
caused huge concern for the increases in
greenhouse gases, significant loss of boreal
forest, declining air and water quality, and
their cumulative effects on northern wildlife
and people.
‘Inviolable’ conveys some of the opposition,
the concern, and the determination to resist
any effort to violate our lives, our territories,
or our sovereignty.”

bruno Canadien’s work is focused
on addressing issues surrounding
the intersection of first nation/Tribal
sovereignty, resource exploitation and
environmental concerns. He uses collage,
adornment, painting and drawing to present
evidence of contemporary indigenous
resistance in his series of paintings titled the
‘freedom fighter Series’.
Just as first nations’ struggles are ongoing,
his series is an ongoing and evolving work,
an attempt at honouring nations and
People.
‘Inviolable’, a collection of new work,
explores the resistance mounted against
Alberta’s oil & gas industry by indigenous
people and communities in western Canada
and the U.S.
“first nations have declared their opposition
to some of the more aggressive and
destructive industrial projects, both existing
and proposed, that threaten the integrity of
our lands, the health of our people, and our
legacy for future generations.

The traditional competition usually found
between high schools disappears as
these young artists show off their talents
together as a group. It is said that today’s
youth will become tomorrow’s leaders in
politics, fashion, science and much more.
This exhibition may be the coming together
of some of tomorrow’s leaders in the world
of fine art.

‘Serendipity’ can be described as things
coming together and developing in
beneficial ways.
The contributing artists chose this theme
because their exhibition is the coming
together of students from Holy Trinity
Academy and the Alberta High School of
fine Arts / foothills Composite High School
in a collaborative effort to showcase the
talents of youth in Okotoks.
The group includes students from Grades
11 and 12 plus some recent graduates,
who are combining many artistic styles
and mediums, including metal work,
photorealistic drawings, paintings and
photography.

Virtual music Bev mazurick Mar 1 to Apr 20 | Small gallery
Although mainly contemporary composi-
tions, the music encompasses combinations
of classical instruments, voice, some non-
western instruments and ethnic sounds.
The variety of music and interesting
rhythms has resulted in an eclectic group
ofpaintings. I found the idea interesting
to explore and hope you will find it just as
interesting to see.”
bev Mazurick is an Alberta artist whose work
encompasses a range of media and styles.

Can you hear music if there is no sound?
“The solo exhibition Virtual Music is a
series of abstract paintings that explore
the idea that sensory experiences such as
music may be translated into visual art. I
became interested in parallels between
music and visual art in 2009 after attending
a performance by Canadian brass. There
was a perception of conversational
exchange among the instruments. I
wondered whether translating those
musical interactions into a visual art form
would be reasonable. My focus became
the correlation between the structure
of the music – the relationship between
instruments and parts, and the elements of
visual design.
Virtual Music as the title for the series,
suggests a sense of morphing sensory
experience from one art form to another.

Can you hear music if there is no sound?
Mazurick has followed many early 20th
century abstract painters, including Wassily
Kandinsky, in the quest to explore the
relationship between music and visual
artists in her own work. Enjoy an evening
of viewing the results of her journey that
turns sounds into visual experiences.
38611 Wed, April 10 | 7:00 to 8:30 pm
tour & talk with Ken Dalgarno
Dalgarno’s exhibition is based on the
mysterious, mutated aspens found near
Hafford, Saskatchewan. Visitors have
speculated the cause as damage from
an alien landing craft. The twisted and
contorted trunks and branches are directly
adjacent to an aspen grove of perfectly
straight and tall trees. Join the speculation
of what could have happened to result in
the mutant growths, and enjoy the artist’s
photographs that share the spirit and
rhythms of the Crooked Trees.

The Crooked Trees of Alticane are a grove
of trembling aspen that have genetically
mutated. So much so, their trunks and
branches twist and contort at incredible
angles. The spirit of the trees is palpable.
There are so many rhythms flowing in this
small tract of land located near Hafford,
Saskatchewan. And yet amazingly this
place has remained virtually unknown. To
add to the allure, in an adjacent grove, not
more than 15 meters away, the trembling
aspen grow perfectly straight and tall.

other sections of that project which were

UpcOMing eXHiBitSinternational Museum Day – Social change
May 18 to May 31 | temporary exhibit
International Museum Day is on May 18
and the theme is “Museums (Memory
+ Creativity) = Social Change.” How do
museums deal with Canada’s not-so-
politically-correct history? We don’t brush
it under the carpet but share it as part of
our history. Sharing history, warts and all,
promotes awareness and helps lead to
social change.
Our Sheep river
June 1 to September 30 | temporary exhibit
The United nations has declared 2013 as
International Year of Water Cooperation.
This exhibit celebrates our relationship with
the Sheep River including its vital role in
our community’s history and in our present
lives. The exhibit aims to provide visitors
with a multi-layered understanding of the
Sheep River (geologically, environmentally,
culturally and socially), and to improve
awareness and appreciation for its
existence.
ALOng tHe SHeep riVer: Stories of Okotoks
This permanent exhibit explores Okotoks’
special landscape, compelling characters,
and bright future. Photos and artifacts
bring to life the stories of the town’s
rich natural and cultural heritage, with a
focus on early immigration, domestic life,
education and commerce.
A trunk Full of Hopes and Dreams
January 4 to May 18 | temporary exhibit
Many early immigrants came to Western
Canada with the hopes of providing a
better life for their families. These are
stories of local families who demonstrated
an unwavering spirit of adventure,
patience and persistence. These Okotoks
families will amaze you – from their long
ocean voyages to their first impressions of
the barren prairie.

treASUreS FrOMtHe MUSeUM cOLLectiOnA century-old pitcher and basin along with
a chamber pot, soap and razor holder have
recently been donated to the museum by
descendants of the Harold Thomas family.
Harold came to the Okotoks area in 1901
from north Wales and owned a farm west
of Okotoks plus a residence in town where
he and his wife Edith raised three children.
The family has also donated the wooden
washstand upon which the beautiful
porcelain set had sat in the Thomas home.
These items are now on display near the
museum’s recently renovated second floor
bathroom and offer a glimpse of how a trip
to the ‘loo has certainly changed!
treASUreS FrOMtHe ArcHiVAL cOLLectiOn It was customary in the late 1800s for
merchants and manufacturers to produce
trade cards to advertise their wares.
Collecting these colourful trade cards
became a popular pastime. The popularity
of trade cards peaked around 1890, and
then almost completely faded by the early
1900s when other forms of advertising in
colour, such as magazines, became more
cost effective.
Alberta (Watt) Daggett began collecting
trade cards when she was growing up in
Grand Manon Island, new brunswick in
the 1880s and 1890s. Alberta brought her
collection to Okotoks in 1899 after marrying
Ernest Daggett in 1898 after a nine-year
engagement. Her extensive collection
now resides at the Okotoks Museum and
Archives. During the month of January,
some of these cards will be on display in the
hallway of the Okotoks Municipal Centre.
