The Southwest CSP Gold Rush
The Mojave Desert is second only to Africa’s Sahara desert in terms of the solar resources required to make the most of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies. With the Mojave Desert crossing California, Arizona and Nevada – some of the largest economies in the USA. It is no surprise that 10,836MW of CSP is in development this year alone. And it’s not going to stop there.
A recent solar association report states that as of March 2010 the USA has over 432MW of operational CSP in production, with an additional three CSP plants likely to be online by the end of the year, it’s clear the southwestern CSP gold rush is on. Unlike other high density solar regions the southwest not only has the raw solar resources, but a robust business ecosystem and most importantly, an insatiable appetite for energy in the region. There’s no better time or place to develop a CSP plant than right now.
The CSP Project Development Conference & Expo has been created to provide you with the business intelligence, key facts, technology breakdowns, analyst insights and critical industry contacts you need to move your CSP project forward with confidence.
Get Prepped Now and Increase Your Speed-To-Market
The US CSP market presents you with a massive opportunity but success is not guaranteed. As a CSP executive you already know - this is not a simple business and there are many hurdles you need to clear in order to get your plant up and running:
California jump-started the world’s CSP and the rest of renewable energy industry in the ‘80s, but today, the state has earned the reputation of being the most difficult state to site, permit, and construct any type of renewable energy project in the country.
Did you know: The cost of mitigating impacts on endangered desert tortoise populations in San Bernardino County (another hot spot for CSP and other renewable) can reach $1 million — per tortoise!
With the recent introduction of environmental desert protection legislation the legal hold ups have become more cumbersome than ever.
Other obstacles you are likely to face include:
• Pressure to sign agreements pledging to use union labor
• Whether or not to ‘Buy USA’ and how this impacts project finance and tax credit availability
• Minimizing perceived risks and obtaining insurance protection to guarantee a bankable project
• Commissioning due diligence on water rights, land ownership, solar resources, land drainage
The more prepared you are to handle these challenges the less pain they will cause you and the quicker your project’s speed to market will be. Once you are up and running you can then focus on beating out the competition and streamlining your project - this is going to be a competitive market and the winners are going to be the developers who base their strategy on the most accurate and up-to-date industry information and analysis.
This is why you need to attend the CSP Project Development Conference & Expo in Denver on October 25-26. You will master your initial development challenges and put yourself in prime position to come out of the CSP gold rush with a profitable slice of this prominent solar market.
Helping You Hit Every Development Goal
CSP site secured Connected to transmission line Profitable PPA signed Sufficient finance fixed Plant constructed within budget
and on time
It’s no easy task to master all your development goals, but CSP Today are here to help - we run dozens of CSP focused events ever year all around the globe and we have a network of industry experts and leading developers that we have called upon to help us construct an agenda that reflects the real life project development challenges you face.
Through hundreds of hours of research we have pinpointed the stumbling blocks that cost you the most money, time and resources when setting up a new CSP development.
This research has formed the basis of the unmissable CSP Project Development Conference & Expo agenda - an agenda that is targeted specifically to help you hit your development goals on time and on budget.
Unrivaled CSP specific information and unique networking opportunitiesUnlike other events, this is solely project development focused, and we delve deep into the issues and offer you practical tips, sure fire strategies and insider solutions that will contribute to your projects success. If it doesn’t have real tangible business value to CSP developers it doesn’t make it into our agenda.
In just two days you will gain insight into all the issues that matter to your business and you will have the opportunity to make connections with some of the industry’s finest minds - the connections that could make or break the future success of your plant.
In addition this event focuses on real life knowledge, lessons learned in the field by real CSP industry members - there is no better way to learn than hearing how your peers overcame the obstacles they faced. That’s why, wherever possible, every agenda topic is tackled by someone who has really faced that issue and has been there, done that and got the green light.
It would take you thousands of man hours and great expense to track down and meet all the attendees at this event on your own. If you want your CSP project to succeed your ROI is clear - you simply will not find another way to meet so many high level contacts and get such high quality business intelligence that is CSP specific and offers real practical knowledge.
Take a look at the rest of this brochure to see the full agenda, read testimonials from our past delegates and get tips on how to convince your CFO to sign off on your conference visit.
Don’t miss your chance to secure your project’s future and be at the heart of the CSP revolution.

Get a quick insight on project development issues with 3 of the speakers
Riley Moore, Senior Engineer, Tri-State Generation and Transmission
How are you involved in the project development cycle?I’ve been involved in the evaluation of suitable solar technologies for our needs. This involved screening of all available pv & thermal systems. I’ve also been involved in the preparation & evaluation of PPA RFP’s. Currently, I’m involved with the development of a hybrid solar thermal/fossil project that we would own.
What can delegates expect to learn from your involvement? The project I’ve been working on has reduced or eliminated some of the common issues with solar projects: transmission interconnection, land control etc.
Albert Fong, Chief Engineering Offi cer, Albiasa Solar
How are you involved in the project development cycle? Albiasa has a 350MW US solar project pipeline where 60% of those projects are of the Albiasa trough technology. For those projects, I have been involved in the Greenfi eld development of the projects to get them to a point with advanced staged County permits, interconnection approvals, and engineering a solar fi eld design that provides the best technology for the given site. Once these projects are at a mid to advanced stage level, I am able to acquire investors who seek ownership in the projects.
Craig Cox, Executive Director, Inter West Energy Alliance
What is your role in the company and what does this entail?I am executive director, responsible for managing the Interwest Energy Alliance, helping to develop policy positions and implementing the market-development goals of our members throughout the states of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
What can delegates expect to learn from your involvement? How we have dealt with similar issues in States throughout our region, as the issues have related to various renewable energy generation and transmission projects. This includes collaboration with regional NGOs, as well as with state utility commissioners and many other stakeholder leaders.
