For centuries the ancient term Furusiyya has embraced the idea of horsemanship and equestrian knowledge, and this same sense of purity, nobility and chivalry has been brought to the FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Series – the world’s leading international team competition.

Originally launched in 1909, the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping is the oldest and most prestigious team Jumping competition in the world. It was devised to make the sport more

accessible to all nations, and enables teams from developing nations to compete on a level playing field with the traditional powerhouses of equestrian sport. As a result of its soaring popularity,

FEI Nations Cup™ events are now staged around the world,

across a number of continents.

Now in its fourth year, Furusiyya is extremely proud to be the title sponsor of the FEI

Nations Cup™ Jumping and to be the driving force behind the international expansion of this great equestrian competition. During 2015, 45 nations competed for 18

places at The Final, staged at the outstanding Real Club de Polo in Barcelona. The 2015 Furusiyya Nations Cup™ Jumping Final successfully continued on from the exceptionally high standards set in previous years and featured countries from all corners of the planet, a true reflection of the popularity of Jumping on the global stage.

Foreword by the FEI President

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Lisbon for the ninth Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping qualifier of the 2016 season.

Three years ago the new format for this historic series was put in place, dividing the world into six qualifying regions. This has allowed more riders from more countries to participate and in turn has broadened the audience and appeal of this prestigious series. Allowing the series to not only be a venue for the established equestrian stars but also being a more equitable path for the stars of tomorrow.

This season Lisbon once again hosts one of nineteen qualifiers in a global series that places team work and national pride at the heart of the competition. It is with this spirit that the competing teams will battle for a qualifying spot in the final which will be taking place at the iconic Real Club de Polo in Barcelona in September.

For those competing who have also qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics Games this promises to be an emotional year as Rio 2016 falls between the penultimate and last qualifying leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping.

The support of Furusiyya and especially HRH Prince Faisal for

the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping, cannot be over stated and has been essential in the development and restructuring of this world class series, making them a key catalyst in the reinvention this competition has experienced over the last few years. This proactive approach will mean further innovations for the series as it adapts with the global development of the sport, maintaining its appeal for our athletes, National Federations, spectators and media.

Mantendo uma organização, já com uma longa tradição no meio equestre nacional e europeu, vai realizar-se mais esta edição do CSIO de LISBOA 2016.

É, pois, motivo de grande satisfação e um privilégio para o Presidente da Federação Equestre Portuguesa fazer o anúncio deste evento que, também e mais uma vez, se vai realizar nas instalações da Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa.

De 26 a 29 de Maio a Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa (SHP) organiza o 96º Concurso de Saltos Internacional Oficial de Lisboa (CSIO).

Nas nossas pistas vamos receber os melhores conjuntos Nacionais e Internacionais, e assistir a uma competição ao mais alto nível, que enaltece os mais nobres valores da Cavalaria, hoje ao serviço do Desporto.

Viajam até nós Cavaleiros e Cavalos de catorze Países, nove dos quais apresentam equipa para disputar a Taça da Nações. A SHP celebrou no passado dia 23-Março o seu centésimo sexto aniversário e é com muita honra e orgulho que organiza mais esta edição do CSIO, com provas qualificativas para o ranking da Federação Equestre Internacional (FEI). Um agradecimento aos Sócios da SHP e a todos os colaboradores da organização, sem os quais não seria possível montar um evento desta dimensão e importância. Um agradecimento especial à FEI, à FEP e a todos os Sponsors, por

acreditarem e apoiarem de forma incondicional o CSIO mais antigo do mundo que se realiza no mesmo local. Baloubet du Rouet é um garanhão Selle Français nascido na Normandia a 8 de Maio de 1989. Criado por Louis Fardin no “Haras du Rouet” é hoje aos 27 anos, considerado o melhor cavalo de saltos de obstáculos de todos os tempos, dado o seu palmarés.

Esta distinção resulta do impressionante percurso desportivo deste garanhão. De um extenso rol de vitórias em provas de alto nível, que começa aos sete anos com a conquista do campeonato de França deste escalão, destacam-

se o feito inédito da conquista dos três títulos consecutivos em campeonatos do Mundo de

Saltos de Obstáculos, tendo-se tornado nos três anos que se seguiram por duas vezes vice-campeão e alcançado um terceiro lugar. Conquista ainda, a medalha

de bronze por equipas nos Jogos Olímpicos de Sidney

The buzz of excitement around the

fourth Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping season has an

Olympic ring to it, as the world’s most prestigious team Jumping competition will provide the perfect launch-pad for horses and riders preparing for Rio 2016.

The series that has its roots in military competition dating back

to the beginning of the last century continues to

thrill and

engage athletes and audiences all across the globe. And the season finale has become one of the most anticipated events on the annual equestrian calendar.

Transformed in recent years by making it accessible to a far greater range of countries, it has subsequently expanded its audience while also helping to develop the sport. For qualification purposes the world is divided into six regions, so teams from all across Europe, North/Central America and the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, Asia/Australasia and Africa will once again take part. The developmental value is evident in the fact that so many previously unknown horse-and-rider combinations really rise to the challenge and establish their credentials at the top level of the sport each year, while new nations emerge to take their place amongst the best of the best.

Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping is all about open-ness and opportunity, the days of elite competition for a small number of privileged nations has been confined to the history books. The new-look series was the vision of Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal, and it reflects the FEI’s determination to extend this quality team competition to as many riders and as many countries as possible, very much in the spirit of the Olympic 2020 Agenda which encourages the

inclusion of “more flags” from around the globe.

Flying the flag of your country is at the heart of the appeal of this great team sport, in which individual glory is put aside in favour of national honour and pride. The Dutch consistently epitomise that spirit, but the World and European title-holders and defending Furusiyya champions had to give way to a brilliant performance by Team Belgium at the 2015 Final which once again returned to the Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, Spain last September.

This wonderful venue will be revisited once again in 2016 where

18 nations will battle it out at the end of another season during which men, women and courageous horses will have carried the hopes and dreams of their countries onto the field of play. And once again the new series, which begins in February with legs in Ocala, USA and Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, and which runs right through to September when the new champions will be crowned, will bring many memorable moments of superb horsemanship and sportsmanship along with its unique brand of camaraderie.
