~ ''And so it is with music. There are lots of singers who sing songs, but not many who actually made

These beautiful, moving words were shared from the heart of Ray Brown, Jr., son of Miss Fitzgerald, at the Smithsonian Institution's opening of the Ella Fitzgerald Exhibit in March.

Brown was joined by the family's attorney, Richard Rosman, who shares a close relationship with the Fitzgerald family. His words, too, describe the deep love and closeness many people feel for this very special lady.

"Ella's legacy and songs were not to be stored away in dusty archives, accessible only to scholars and historians - they had to be available for her fans, the next

generation of young fans, for all of us - to see - to hear - to feel - to bring back memories of cherished moments - or to

create new ones - and to just enjoy great music from a great l~dy."

It is a love for Miss Fitzgerald that has drawn Christopher Newport University and the City of

Newport News together in creating a festival befitting of her name. CNU and Newport News will celebrate her legacy with the first Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival May 3-9.

In a news conference this month, CNU President Paul Trible announced, "Ella Fitzgerald is an international treasure! We are proud

that she was born in this community and are dedicated to honoring her life as a teacher and an entertainer through an event filled with music, visual arts and educational opportunities for music lovers of all ages."

Newport News Mayor Joe Frank added, "I feel proud that this city and its hometown university are furthering the legacy of Ella Fitzgerald in a format that is both fun and meaningful. The citizens ofNewport News are

receiving a cultural history lesson in an enjoyable environment, while learning more about one of our city's most

famous and accomplished daughters." Festival sponsors include The Virginia Waterfront

International Arts Festival and The American Jazz and Blues Museum. Rob Cross, artistic director of

the Virginia Waterfront International Arts Festival, said, "The collaboration between

CNU and our arts festival gives us an opportunity to bring world-renowned jazz artists to the region and contribute something of lasting importance to the area and to the cultural life in our communities."

"Ella Fitzgerald spent most of her life educating young people - in honor of Ella and her life-long pursuit of educating young

people, we should continue that," said Dr. James Payne, Executive Director of the American Jazz and Blues Museum.

Planning for the Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival began last February when CNU's Director of Jazz Studies, Bill Brown, and Director ofMusic, Dr. Mark Reimer, met with city officials to discuss plans for the festival. The proposal for the festival was modeled after the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Montreaux, Switzerland. "We wanted an educational environment where artists were selected according to international notoriety and performance as well as educational background," said Brown. "Phil Woods teaches interactive lessons over a CD rom; Arturo Sandoval is professor of trumpet at Florida International University."

As the project grew and planning for the festival swung into high gear, CNU hired Michelle Gilliam to coordinate the event. Gilliam, an ardent fan ofMiss Fitzgerald and her music, has worked on a number of high profile events. She assisted with celebrity handling at the White House in the 80's and worked for the National Senatorial Committee on special events.

"I have always loved Miss Fitzgerald and her music," said Gilliam. "A lot of artists are very hot for a short amount of time and then they fade away, but Ella's awards and honors span the entire length of her career. She sang with everybody. She is beyond age and ethnicity - the usual barriers that keep fans from following this artist or that artist. I don't think she ever thought what she did was extraordinary, but I think it was."

Maureen Rodriguez Williams is Festival Co-Coordinator. "Ella Fitzgerald is an icon. Her music, her spirit and her soul live on in many oftoday's performers. Her gift has left an indelible mark in the music industry that we shall forever use as the standard."

The festival will kick off Sunday, May 3, with an exhibit and reception at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. Historical Greats of Jazz & Blues, loaned by the American Jazz & Blues Museum, will feature portraits of jazz and blues singers, costumes, instruments, and sheet music. The opening exhibit will be followed by a performance of the premier college group, Western Michigan, and one of Hampton Roads' favorite jazz and rhythm and blues singers Jean Came.

The week will continue with numerous evening concerts, including the CNU Jazz

.... 2

Ensemble with guest artists Joe Ham ell and Jae Sinnett, the Airmen of Note, and the Great American Music Ensemble with Ethel Ennis. Internationally known performers, including Cassandra Wilson, Phil Woods, Arturo Sandoval, and Ethel Ennis, will highlight the week.

Many of the artists performing at the festival share a special affection for Miss Fitzgerald. "Jean Came is a huge fan of Ella's," said Gilliam. "She studied Ella and used her as a role model. And now the next genration will study Jean. Ethel Ennis is one of the few jazz singers still alive who can say they performed with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie ... all of the greats. She has a style that's reminiscent ofEila's."

In addition to evening concerts, the festival will include numerous workshops, master classes and performance opportunities for students of elementary through college age.

"The Ella Fitzgerald Music Festival is one of the greatest learning and cultural opportunities that our students and community will ever have available to them right here at home," said Dr. Mark Reimer, CNU Director ofMusic. "These jazz artists of international renown will be featured as clinicians and performers, giving a wealth of knowledge, insight and entertainment to everyone who participates in the festival. Truly, this is a monumental achievement for the arts and for CNU."

Newport News School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Lett said, "This festival will offer students the opportunity to participate in elementary, middle and high school workshops and competitive events, conducted by outstanding jazz musicians, as well as a chance to interact with jazz performers, arrangers, and composers of national and international stature. It will be a memorable experience and provide a lasting impression on many youngsters as to what may be possible for them through hard work, determination and perseverance, regardless of their present circumstances."

Elementary students will participate in clinics on May 5 and 8 with Diana Spradling and the Airmen of Note, middle school students on May 4 and May 7 with John Dearth and the Airmen of Note, and high school students on May 4, 7 and 8 with John Dearth, Paris Rutherford, Joe Hamell, Arturo Sandoval and Phil Woods. CNU will host the District 8 Jazz Competition for high school students on May 7 .

The sound of her voice has caressed us In every decade for so long And surely we will miss her And her way with every song Although she's no longer with us Her spirit will linger on In her memory These words were put to song ...

Dear Ella Our special First Lady of Song Here's to you Dear Ella You gave us your best for so long Yes it's true Dear Ella We're all so glad That you answered the call For it's certain That you and your music Will always stand tall You're a blessing to all ...

(Lyrics - Kenny Burrell, from Dee Dee Bridgewater's 1998 Grammy Winning Album

-Dear Ella)

Dear Ella

On June 15, 1996, the entert. ainment industry lost one of its most beloved entertainers, Miss Ella

Fitzgerald. As news spread of Miss Fitzgerald's

death, I, like many of her fans world wide, was overcome with such a deep sadness. There had always been Ella Fitzgerald. Her music touched the lives of my greatgrandmothers, my grandmothers, my mother and myself. And though her recordings will continue to touch many generations to come, the sadness from knowing that there wouldn't be another live performance, there wouldn't be another memorable photo or quote and there wouldn't be another glorious song- frightened me. With her passing, an extraordinary story came to an end. And I feared that since my life was better because she existed, her passing would now make it worse.

Three years prior to her death, while working on my Masters in Fine Arts at VCU in Richmond, I began working on a screenplay about her monumental life. As a young African American performer, Miss Fitzgerald provided me with a solid example of an extraordinary work ethic, values, faith, perseverance and longevity. And though there are many African American performers who contributed greatly to the entertainment history of our country, few of their stories have been told with accuracy. In my naivete, I thought I could

capture her extraordinary life on paper. I thought I would be the one to explain to the world, in a two-hour film, her story. I didn't understand what it truly meant to have a career that spanned six decades, that produced over 250 albums, that had performed on radio, television, stage and film, and that had every prestigious award and honor to its name. I did however know she was born in Newport News, Virginia, which in my young mind, was enough.

As a child, it's always the simple things that capture your attention and spark your imagination. And though I don' t recall the very first time I heard Ella Fitzgerald's voice, I know I came to appreciate her first for our hometown connection and later for her extraordinary talent, trials and accomplishments, that paved the way for all the artists that followed.

Ella Jean Fitzgerald was the only child of the very turbulent union between Tempie Williams and William Fitzgerald. Ella's first years of life were spent in downtown Newport News. When her father passed away in 1920, she and her mother moved to New York City to be near family, but by the age of 13, young Ella Jean was an orphan. Unexplained difficulties with family found Ella living on the streets by age 14, often finding shelter in the back of movie houses and theaters. In 1933, on a dare, Ella entered the "Amateur Night at the Apollo Contest" and won. She intended to dance, but lost her nerve when she got on stage. Mimicking her favorite singer, Connie Boswell, she sang 'Object of My Affection' and 'Judy' and won first prize. And in that magical moment took her first major step towards stardom.

Miss Fitzgerald was honored with every prestigious award given to singers and musicians during her 60-year career. She won 13 Grammy Awards, her first in 1957 (the first year they were given out) and her last in 1991 . In 1989, the Society of Singers named its highest award after her. She has been honored by the White House and The Kennedy Center with their highest arts honors.

In later years, diabetes and heart ailments took a toll on her life. On June 15 1996, Miss Fitzgerald passed away in Los Angeles, surrounded by family.

"We feel the Executive-in-Residence program will significantly enhance the quality of our academic programs," said Winder. "This is the type of program students will remember."

Blandford, who has watched the University grow and has become friends with many of the school's faculty, students and alumni, said he was flattered to be considered for the program.

CNU Makes Top Ten List of Safest Colleges in the U.S.

Christopher Newport University was ranked sixth in the nation among safest colleges by Healey Roman

Associates in Framingham, Massachusetts. The firm evaluated 383 four-year, accredited schools in a comprehensive study of university and college crime. CNU was ranked one of the top ten safest colleges in the U.S. based on its average crime rate over three years.

"Our low crime rate is not only attributed to us as a police department, but the cooperation from faculty, staff and students in reporting suspicious activity which enables us to respond in a timely manner to prevent crime," said Campus Police Chief Gerald Bright.

cribner Family Establishes • ./

.. ~ ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDATCNU

A philanthropic spirit lives within the family that aspires to follow the model of its patriarch, the late A. Kenneth Scribner, Sr. , a successful Virginia businessman who died. His widow, Mrs. Marie D. Scribner, and his son and daughter-in-law, A.K. Scribner, Jr. and Susan Faulkner Scribner, will award the first Scribner scholarship this fall to an undergraduate from Christopher Newport University 's College of Business, Science and Technology.

The newly created A. Kenneth Scribner, Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund at CNU is one of several scholarships the family has established throughout the region.

"I am very pleased that our students will benefit from the generosity of the Scribner family," said CNU President Paul Trible. "I hope the Scribners ' commitment to education will inspire our students to enjoy Mr. Scribner's passion for learning and challenge others to follow their lead."

"As I listened to Paul Trible tell the CNU story on Cox Cable and the enthusiasm he had for CNU, I decided this was an institution that had to be investigated," said Scribner during a recent interview. "All of the projects we selected have been based on needs that we recognized. We like to look for a situation where the gift will make a significant differ- A K th s .b s . enne en ner, r. ence when utilized. That's why we chose Christopher Newport."

Scribner continues, "We feel that we have had so many good things happen to us, but that my father did not live long enough to share the fruits of his efforts. I am the vehicle. My father's philosophy was instilled in me. We enjoy having the opportunity of sharing our good fortune with others."

The elder Scribner worked his way through prep school at The Roxbury Latin School in Massachusetts and as a commuter student at Harvard University. With nothing in his pocket but his knowledge and a desire to progress, he graduated cum laude in 1920 with a degree in chemistry. After graduation, he joined the West Norfolk, Virginia predecessor of Virginia Chemicals Inc. as a technical salesman, and 51 years later, retired as president and chairman of the board.

Prior to his death, Scribner linked Virginia Chemicals' top scientists with students in the region and established programs at The Roxbury Latin School and Norfolk Academy that recognized and rewarded outstanding teaching and scholarship. In addition, he served as a member of the Portsmouth School Board, the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors, the ODU Educational Foundation, and various other civic and professional organizations.

Like his father, the younger Scribner, a veteran of World War II and a Harvard graduate, has been equally successful. During the course of his career in business, he has had a variety of management positions in many facets of industry. Throughout it all, Scribner said one of his most satisfying experiences was working with 'green, young people' and watching them grow.

"There are a lot of students who have the academic capacity but don't have the funds," said Scribner. "If we can make scholarship money available to such students, it might enable them to acquire a college education that they wouldn't be able to get. It also might enable some of the students who would otherwise have to work, to spend more time on their academics and, therefore, be more productive in their future lives."

"I think it is important for any individual who has the ability and ambition to have an opportunity to go to college. There is a certain exposure that one gets from a college experience - rubbing elbows with professors and fellow students - that broadens students' scope and gives them new ideas and thoughts that they can better utilize in their own lives and make greater contributions to others in the future ."

Alums Jim Englert ' 92 and Thad Melton '92 have been sailing

together since they first met on CNC 's sailing team in 1987. The sailing enthusiasts were part of the sailing team when it was ranked thirteenth in the nation. Since their college days, the two alums have begun to make a name for themselves at regattas around the country and intend to compete in the 5-0-5 World Championships in Hyannis, Massachusetts in September. The two alums have beaten other sailors who placed in the top five in the last 5-0-5 World Championships, which lends them confidence in their rapidly developing abilities. Last year, the duo tied for first place at the Mid Atlantic Regional Championships, and placed second at the Eastern Canadian Championship on their two-man boat - the 5-0-5 with a jib, mainsail and a spinaker. In addition, they placed fifth at the 5-0-5 Mid Winter Championships just behind Ethan Bixby, a 5-0-5 World Champion and in front of Macy Nelson , a three time North American champion.

One could say the alums were destined to sail together. "Sailing is something I've always done," said Melton. "My father manufactured sailboats in Ohio. I began taking out a rowboat when I was three and started racing after I turned eleven."

Like Melton, Englert's love of competition began as a child. "My father was

captain of the Naval Academy Sailing Team in 1955," said Englert. "I began sailing as a toddler. My parents would put me in a car seat and take off for a regatta!" Before he was a teenager Englert began competing as a junior sailer on the Chesapeake Bay.

The sport for Englert and Melton is exhilarating. "It starts with each race," said Englert. "I'm so nervous my hands are shaking."

"It's exciting and great to be out on the water," said Melton. "Sailing is something I've done my entire life - the thrill of the speed going through the water, particularly on a high wind day or beating someone around that mark. It's an adrenaline rush when you win."

One of their most memorable experiences out on the water was on the CNC sailing team. Englert and Melton took out the college's J-24 boat their senior year during a practice race to the Hampton Roads bridge tunnel - something no one else on the sailing team had ever done.

"There were five of us - Jim, Mike Weaver, Brian Costa and Susan Hoskins," said Melton. "It was blowing pretty good. As we went around the tunnel we decided to put our spinnaker out and head down wind. We finally got our chute in and the boat just took off. There was spray coming up three to four feet off the back of the boat. It was incredible!"

The two sailors begin talking about September's championship race. "We are a long shot for this," said Englert. "We haven't competed in a world championship before. They hope their new boat, the 5-0-5, a double-handed 16'6", touted for its light weight, high performance hull design, powerful sailplan and trapeze, will do the trick.

"The team with the best boat speed, boat handling and tactics wi II win the world championship," said Melton. "The boat speed we have for the most part, but we sti II

need to work on changing gears as the wind velocity changes. Boat handling is the next important area to work on. We need to be able to complete every tack every time even when we are dead tired."

Melton says that will require practicing the moves thousands oftimes until they become automatic. The team has recruited Mike Weaver, CNU's assistant sailing coach, to coach them.

Englert and Melton plan to compete locally over the summer and along New England's coast before the world championship in September. Their goal is to race each weekend that they can against the best 5-0-5 sailors in the world.

Between regattas, Englert and Melton practice in Gloucester. The two must juggle their competition time in between busy work schedules. Englert is a production manager for Cybernetics and Melton is the general superintendent for FNC Fireproofing.

Englert and Melton hope to raise several thousand dollars this summer for a new mast and line, rigging, sails, boom, foam rudder and carbon tiller .

YOU can establish a scholarship at CNU.

Would you like to establish a scholarship at Christopher Newport University but think you can't afford it right now? If so, you ought to consider funding a scholarship through a bequest- an amount of money or a percentage of your estate that you leave to the University in your will or trust. For a minimum bequest of $10,000 you can establish a named scholarship and

• make a major gift without using any of the funds you need to live on

• reduce your federal estate taxes

• make an enduring commitment to your alma mater

• become a member of the Navigator Society

Norma Brown in the Office of Institutional Advancement will be happy to explain how you can make a bequest to CNU. Contact her at (757) 594-7805, by e-mail at [email protected],
