WARNING: THIS CLASS IS AN EXPERIMENT!

Page 3: CS549: HCI in the Real World, A Retrospective

Motivation• Take learning *outside* the classroom • Missing bridge between academia and industry • No job title says “HCI” in it • HCI leads to a vast variety of roles

!

!

• Designed as the class I would have wanted to have as an undergrad

Pre-Requisites• No hard and fast pre-requisites, if space

permits and you have active interest, you are welcome to take this class. !

• Ideal: • CS 147: Intro to HCI • CS 247: HCI Design Studio • CS 376: Research Topics (bonus!) • CS 547: HCI Seminar (bonus!)

Class Demographics

N = 17

Page 6: CS549: HCI in the Real World, A Retrospective

Class Format• Series of on-site visits to Bay Area technology

companies • See real-life HCI-practitioners in their own

environment • Hear about how they do in their work life • How did they get there

!

• Focus on different types of roles

Site Visit Format• Wednesday’s from 3:15 PM - 6:05 PM

• Expect to use 1 hour of that as “travel time” since several of the companies we will be visiting will be in San Francisco!

• Sample agenda: • 4:00 PM: Class convenes at off-campus location • 4:00 PM - 4:10 PM: Check-in/Sign-in • 4:10 PM - 4:30 PM: Walking Tour • 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM: 2x-3x Presentations/Talks • 5:30 PM - 5:50 PM: Discussion • 5:50 PM: Adjourn

My Secret Goals• Influence the direction of someone’s life/

career within 10 weeks !

• Show students what it’s like out there and let them make a better informed decision about what they what they want to do !

• Learn how students perceive HCI at Stanford and beyond • Is there anything we need to change?

Perceptions of HCICS549: HCI in the Real World

11

Page 12: CS549: HCI in the Real World, A Retrospective

What is HCI?• the study, planning, design and uses of the

interaction between people (users) and computers !

• HCI is different from other Computer Science disciplines in that it’s all about the periphery !

• HCI is ultimately about PEOPLE • the computers do what we design them to do

12

Page 13: CS549: HCI in the Real World, A Retrospective

What is Design?• to plan and make decisions about (something

that is being built or created) : to create the plans, drawings, etc., that show how (something) will be made !

• to plan and make (something) for a specific use or purpose !

• to think of (something, such as a plan) : to plan

HCI-Practitioner Roles• Visual Designer • Interaction Designer • Industrial Designer • Usability Analyst • Front-end Engineer • Product Manager • Startup Founder • Physical/Tangible Product Designer • Researcher/Academic
