Keys to unlock Successful Entrepreneurship

Introduction

The era of globalization, Liberalization, Industrialization and immerging technologies has opened up abundant opportunities for the mankind to grow socially, technologically, economically and financially. In the old system of socialized economies, the government used to possess the ownership of business ventures for fulfilling all needs of human survival. In the era of liberalization, the introduction of free markets has not only given opportunities to the people to join the economic development as entrepreneurs in the varied field of economic market but has also supported the global economic development beyond leaps and bounds.

Keeping in view the advantages which entrepreneurships serves to the growth and development of the nation at the global fora, the Government of India is also facilitating the set up, working and sustainment of entrepreneurship in the country in the maximum possible areas.

At one side where entrepreneurships serves to the growth and development of the nation; being an entrepreneur is mix of various thick and thins. It is challenging, rewarding, frustrating, satisfying, disappointing, and exhilarating. To be successful in one’s adventure along with sustaining in the highs and lows of one’s own business, some of the qualities need to be perceived which surely pave the way towards successful entrepreneur of the global acclamation. In the words of Steve Jobs, the Co-Founder of Apple: “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.”

In line to this background, this paper highlights few factors which constitute the key for the successful entrepreneurship. Before understanding the key for successful entrepreneurship, it is important to understand what an entrepreneurship is and who is an entrepreneur. This will help the reader to elucidate the key attributes in clear perspective.

Meaning of Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneur

In the simplest language, Entrepreneurship can be devolved of two meanings:

Firstly, the entrepreneurship refers to owning and managing a business. This is the occupational notion of entrepreneurship i.e. creation of new business.

Secondly, entrepreneurship refers to entrepreneurial behaviour in the sense of seizing an economic opportunity. This is the behavioural notion of entrepreneurship.

According to A. K. Yetisan, “Entrepreneurship is a process of designing, launching and running a new business, which typically begins as a small business, such as a start-up company, offering a product, process or service for sale or hire. It has been defined as the endeavour with the capacity and willingness to develop, organize, and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit.

* Dr. Gargi Rajvanshi, Assistant Director, ICSI.

The views expressed are personal views of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the Institute.

Page 3: CS FOUNDATION COURSE...Promotes Capital Formation 2. Creates Large-Scale Employment Opportunities 3. Reducing Unemployment 4. Promotes Balanced Regional Development 5. Reduces Concentration

e-bulletin 3 July 2017

To define entrepreneur, it can be said that an entrepreneur has been defined as "a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk". Rather than working as an employee, an entrepreneur runs a small business and assumes all the risk and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes."

Role of Entrepreneurship in Economic Development

The entrepreneur who is a business leader looks for ideas and puts them into effect in fostering economic growth and development. Entrepreneurship is one of the most important input in the economic development of a country. The entrepreneur acts as a trigger head to give spark to economic activities by his entrepreneurial decisions. He plays a pivotal role not only in the development of industrial sector of a country but also in the development of farm and service sector. The major roles played by an entrepreneur in the economic development of an economy are discussed in a systematic and orderly manner as follows.

1. Promotes Capital Formation 2. Creates Large-Scale Employment Opportunities 3. Reducing Unemployment 4. Promotes Balanced Regional Development 5. Reduces Concentration of Economic Power 6. Wealth Creation and Distribution 7. Increasing Gross National Product and Per Capita Income 8. Improvement in the Standard of Living 9. Promotes Country's Export Trade 10. Induces Backward and Forward Linkages 11. Facilitates Overall Development

Along with these points, it will be pertinent to state that entrepreneurship leads to overall development of an area due to increase in demand and setting up of more and more units. In this way, the entrepreneurs multiply their entrepreneurial activities, thus creating an environment of enthusiasm and conveying an impetus for overall development of the area.

Key to Hold Successful Entrepreneurship

Everything comes with some cost. Entrepreneurship is also not free from its cost. Apart from the capital cost and business running cost, the starting up and running a business is not a smooth sail. Starting a business from scratch is even harder. The entrepreneurial journey is a rollercoaster, and in the beginning one probably face more downs than ups. It requires a lot much of skills, positive attitude, hard work, patience and efficiency to lead an entrepreneurship to the graph of success. Various authors have mentioned a plethora of attributes for the entrepreneur to lead his venture towards accomplishment; yet following twelve keys as mentioned by “The daily Drukler” are globally accepted in making an entrepreneur a tough person with power to make the struggle a bit easier and to positively lead his venture towards success.

The 12 key insights which one should apply to his world of entrepreneurship are discussed as below:

1. Venture should have Adore and Interest It is always said that “those who perform, love what they’re doing are always successful. This is true in case of entrepreneurship too. Yes, one need to love what one does. It’s called passion. Think about it and find your passion because it’s the place to start on your road to success as an entrepreneur.

Page 4: CS FOUNDATION COURSE...Promotes Capital Formation 2. Creates Large-Scale Employment Opportunities 3. Reducing Unemployment 4. Promotes Balanced Regional Development 5. Reduces Concentration

e-bulletin 4 July 2017

According to Drucker, “your performance depends on your love and passion for something to be performed.”

2. Active and On-Time Actions It is rightly analysed that Successful entrepreneurs do not wait until the opportunity knock their doors. They rather perceive the bright idea and go to work. Passion without action is to have the Ferrari in the garage collecting dust. One need to plan, think and strategize. In reality it is those who take action win the race every time over those who don’t. Therefore listen to idea and ‘go to work’ not tomorrow but today itself.

3. Know Your Business One can only achieve success in one’s venture when he or she is through with the minute technicalities of their work. Therefore, think hard about what is the purpose and mission of your business? Success is clearly yours when you are clear on your purpose as to why this business is for you? Then only you will be able to know how to run this business. It’s your North Star and if you haven’t identified it then you’re lost in the dark and primed to walk off a cliff.

4. Know your Customer Of course it is the customer who is the start and end of any business. One should know ones customer who is the reason for him in business. Then only, one can better target the market for his business and lead the business towards success.

5. Know the realities of Business As rightly said that “Neither studies nor market research nor computer modelling is a substitute for the test of reality.” Drucker called it “the test of reality”. To run a business successfully with desired yields one should find the realities of related aspects of business rather than engaging into the overhyped myths.

6. Learn about Innovations: It says that for the successful run of one’s entrepreneurship, it is pivotal to “Measure innovations by what they contribute to market and customer.” The life blood of a company is rooted in management and innovation.

7. Align with the Market: Be ready to pivot. Go with the market. Don’t worry if it’s not the way you ‘planned’. Nothing ever is. As Drucker alludes to here, some of the greatest success stories in business are the result of a change in direction based on market response or product surprise. Just like the guy trying to invent a super strong new adhesive. Yes — he failed. His failure is called a Post-it Note.

8. Understand your capabilities and qualities One should hatch on the ideas which are workable and are in the reach of his capabilities. All the Innovative ideas are not meant to be worked equitably for all the entrepreneurs It is said that Innovations are like frogs’ eggs: of a thousand hatched, only one or two survive to maturity. Therefore, your goal as an entrepreneur is to create a system and culture which allows you to quickly move through all the potential things you ‘could’ do so you can nail the things you ‘should’ do.

9. Learn to Say “No” In short, all one has to do is learn to say ‘no’ if an activity contributes nothing.

10. Strong Management Strong management drives the company in line with its purpose of incorporation. This is not only advantageous for the growth of the company but this also avoids conflicts with various unnecessary challenges which might interrupt the development of the company. To be crisp, “top management will be the company. Everything else can be outsourced.”

Page 5: CS FOUNDATION COURSE...Promotes Capital Formation 2. Creates Large-Scale Employment Opportunities 3. Reducing Unemployment 4. Promotes Balanced Regional Development 5. Reduces Concentration

e-bulletin 5 July 2017

11. Focus on the bigger picture Always remember to take a step back and think about why you started on this road in the first place. What is your ultimate goal? Whether it is about building something that lasts, gaining fame and success, or giving back to society, keeping your long-term goals in mind will help you to reframe your daily challenges against a larger backdrop of achievement. The entrepreneurial path is about the journey—not the destination. Building resilience and stepping outside of your comfort zone are pillars of the temple of personal growth that you are about to erect.

12. Eat the elephant one bite at a time Not hitting your targets as fast as you want to be frustrating, especially after hearing about so many unicorns and 20-year-old tech billionaires. It’s important to keep in mind that every overnight success takes 10 years. There is a lot of hard work and failure behind every triumph, and the key to reaching that point in your own story is absolute perseverance through anything negative that comes your way. You will only realize how much progress you’ve made by looking back every once in a while at where you started.

Last but not the least, with finding and realizing the potential of a business is psychologically difficult but is not practically difficult. One should be confident of one’s qualities and should lead the ventures towards success while preserving the keys for success.
