Princess Cruises has announced plans to add a new ship to its ever-growing fleet in 2017 and, although the vessel’s exact specifications are yet to be revealed, she will be of the same class as her two soon-to-be sister ships – Royal Princess and Regal Princess.

The new ship will be constructed to carry 3,560 passengers and will weigh in at 143,000 tons. She will feature a number of popular public spaces, including multiple signature dining venues, a glamorous central atrium and Princess’ trademark Movies Under the Stars outdoor cinema.

Holland America Line has recently announced that the keel has been laid for its new Pinnacle Class ship.

A block weighing 680 tons was lowered to officially mark construction of the ship, which, with a capacity for 2,650 guests, will be the largest ship ever built for the cruise line.

The as yet un-named vessel is set to hit the ocean waves in February 2016.

Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ latest ship will be named Azores and is due to join the line’s fleet in 2015, replacing Discovery. Originally constructed in 1994 as a transatlantic ocean liner, the ship was stripped down to her hull before being restored during a $150 million renovation.

Catering for 550 guests within 277 cabins, Azores will also hold a fabulous array of features across her eight passenger decks, including a selection of newly renovated restaurants and bars.

FirstLOOK

Royal Caribbean Quantum ClassIt’s coming - a whole new concept in cruising - exciting technology, innovations and firsts at sea.

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class is unlike anything you’ve seen before. We sent Product & Commercial Director Alison to check on the progress of the new ships.

Did you know?Over 150,000 dining reservations have

already been made for Quantum of the Seas

The Quantum Class ships are the largest ever to be built at Meyer Werft

ship yard

There will be no land-fill production from the ships’ construction -

everything is reused, recycled or incinerated

Due to their colossal size, there will only be 30 centimetres of space between the ships’ hulls and the ground when

they sail out of the yard

All cabins are constructed away from the main vessel, and then neatly slotted

into place at a later date

Each cabin is thoroughly checked by a representative from Royal Caribbean, and then – only once they are happy with what they find – are the cabins fitted with official Royal Caribbean

locks

Istanbul boasts a long and illustrious history, the remnants of which are on display across this diverse and intriguing metropolis. Bridging the gap between Europe and Asia, Turkey’s most populous city is famous for its collection of historic and impressive landmarks, which include majestic mosques and spectacular palaces, alongside other marvellous structures such as the basilica-turned-museum, Hagia Sophia.

You can also experience contemporary Turkish culture in locations all over city, especially at the bustling souks and marketplaces, where you will find an array of colourful fabrics and spices, as well as other authentic local souvenirs – ideal as gifts for friends and family.

Venice truly lives up to its reputation as the world’s most romantic city and is an utter delight to explore. Perhaps best-known for its labyrinth of winding canals, which twist and turn their way through this watery metropolis, Venice offers a wealth of exciting sites for the discerning traveller to uncover.

An abundance of iconic landmarks can be found littered across Venice and a tour of the city is a great way to see them all whilst in port. From the inspiring architecture of Saint Mark’s Basilica to the majestic Doge’s Palace, fascinating Venetian heritage and culture is on show around every corner.

VENICE ISTANBUL

DUBROVNIKA jewel of Croatia’s Adriatic coastline, the ancient walled-city of Dubrovnik is amongst Europe’s most historically intact cities and, as such, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A walk around Dubrovnik’s historic city walls is highly recommended – as is a tour of the Old Town, where you will discover plenty of intriguing monuments.

Dubrovnik is also known for its well-maintained sandy beaches, which are complemented by the region’s warm Mediterranean climate. Whether you are looking for a cornucopia of historical discovery or a spot of sun-soaked relaxation, Dubrovnik offers a little something for every type of traveller.

The medieval town of Kotor is not one of the Mediterranean’s most well-known ports, but nestled on the edge of the Montenegrin coastline, it exudes timeless charm and plenty of historical intrigue. The town’s maze of cobblestone streets and scenic piazzas – surrounded by towering cliffs sweeping down to a stunning natural bay – creates a truly captivating environment.

Kotor’s culture and heritage is best appreciated in its Old Town, where ancient structures such as St Tryphon’s Cathedral and the Rector’s Palace stand side by side with quaint cafes and restaur-ants, offering travellers the chance to dine within this enchanting setting.

As the capital of the beautiful island nation of Malta, situated in the Mediterranean Sea, Valletta has maintained much of its stunning 16th century architecture, which is on show across the city. Make sure to leave plenty of time to explore Valletta or book a tour of the city with your cruise operator or tour provider, as there is so much history to uncover, from grand cathedrals and imposing fortresses to beautiful gardens and fascinating museums.

Valletta’s breathtaking natural beauty is also immediately apparent, and a walk around the outside of the city walls is a fantastic way to observe spectacular views along the island’s rugged coastline.

EmergingPORTS

Here are some of our favourite emerging ports across the Mediterranean. These wonderful destinations are becoming more and more popular with cruisers, so book a fantastic deal now with Cruise118.com – as they are likely to sell out quickly - and discover something a little different on your next Mediterranean voyage.

Located on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Ravenna is the perfect destination for cruisers looking for an authentic Italian experience within a charming setting – without the hustle, bustle and overcrowded streets of larger cities such as Rome or Milan. In typical Italian style, this delightful town is home to an array of fashionable shopping boutiques and quaint cafés, offering a taste of local culture and cuisine.

Although a relatively small town, Ravenna also contains a number of historic churches and plenty of interesting architecture, much of which dates back centuries. Take time to wander around this attractive community to uncover a host of wonderful surprises.

Too often overlooked in favour of Croatia’s better-known cities, Spilt is a charming town on the nation’s Dalmatian coastline. At its heart, Split contains an abundance of wonderfully preserved Roman history, in the form of ancient walls, temples and squares, many of which have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to their historical significance.

The region also boasts an ideal Mediterranean climate, perfect if you’re looking to escape to somewhere warmer. A walk along the city’s picturesque and sun-drenched waterfront is a particularly rewarding experience, while relaxing on the sandy beaches is a great way to top up your tan.

THE PLACE TO BE

A cruise is the ultimate way to see Australia. While a hotel holiday roots you to the spot, a cruise keeps you moving to a different destination Down Under every day. Where a self-catering break leaves you having to organise meals, days out and transport back, a cruise package can cover every cost and practicality before you sail. The result? You get nothing but the good parts on your Australian tour – like scuba diving, hot air balloon rides and guided tours of modern cities and unique national parkland. A cruise takes the planning and the pains out of your holiday and just lets you get on with the important part – enjoying an unforgettable travel experience.

And in a place like Sydney, you’ll want all the time you can get to enjoy it. Even just arriving feels like a bucket list experience, with the famous curved sails of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge coming into view as you sail into port. And once you set foot on dry land in Australia’s largest city, you’ll understand why it’s such a high-demand travel destination. From Bondi Beach to the Blue Mountains, everything buzzes with a unique energy and colour.

Sydney is an incredible city to experience on a cruise, with more arts, music, sports and nightlife going on than you could shake a boomerang at. But it’s also the gateway to some once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experiences in destinations across Australia – from the urban energy of Brisbane to unforgettable

wildlife experiences around the Great Barrier Reef

Sydney knows how to have fun, with bright public artworks and a packed social calendar that pulls you right into its way of life. Arts and music festivals, wildlife tours, a legendary nightlife packed with smiling revellers... it’s an easy place to fall in love with. Beyond urban attractions like Luna Park, boutique shopping along The Rocks and the Australian Museum and Taronga Zoo, you’ll also find a great pick of bucket list experiences to take away with you when you set sail. Tour the iconic Opera House, scale the towering heights of Harbour Bridge on a guided climb, and head just out of the city for the wildlife of the Blue Mountains – some of Australia’s most beautiful natural landscape sits right on Sydney’s doorstep. But beyond the city, a cruise heading out of Sydney also opens up some more essentials for your Australian bucket list...

SYDNEY

What could be better on your Australian tour than the chance to hug a koala? Everyone loves a koala. They’re fuzzy, they’re laid back and they communicate in snores and burps. So they’re a lot like many humans, really. They’ve even got little pouches like kangaroos for their babies, also called joeys. Hugging the little critters should be on everyone’s bucket list – and we can tailor a cruise that gives you the chance. Add a 6 night hotel stay to your cruise in the five-star Sofitel hotel in Brisbane, and you’ll get a trip to the Wheel of Brisbane and the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary included – along with the chance to tick a koala hug off your list, and enjoy an adventure in spectacular Springbrook National Park.

A world away from Australia’s great cities is Cairns on the northeast coast, giving you a taste of the life aquatic to add an extra dose of awesome to your bucket list tour. Cairns itself is a gorgeous city, where – as you walk the sunny streets – you’d be hard pressed to find any shops, homes, restaurants and public buildings that aren’t bright, modern and beautiful. Beyond the city’s bars, night markets and wildlife parks, the surrounding countryside is perfect for a hot air balloon ride, showing you paradise beaches and the spectacular Daintree Rainforest rolling out below. But the area’s biggest attraction by far has to be the magnificent wildlife of the Great Barrier Reef – and a chance to see this natural wonder on a diving or snorkelling tour is surely right up there at the top of any adventurer’s bucket list. ■

For the critically-acclaimed TV series Game of Thrones, location is everything. The show is set in an elaborate fantasy world modelled on the

medieval era, so it is important that the producers find the perfect place in which to bring this world to life. To achieve this, they track down historic and enchanting locations across the globe –

many of which are available on cruise itineraries, so you can secure one of our amazing deals and

see them for yourself.

DubrovnikFantasy fans around the world may know Dubrovnik

better by its screen name of King’s Landing, as it provides the backdrop for scenes staged in the capital

city of the fictional world of Westeros in HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones.

An Eastern Mediterranean cruise can take you to this ancient walled city to see some of the iconic

locations featured in the popular TV show, including historic battlements, fortresses and drawbridges,

most of which have been graced by the series’ many well-known characters. The location for the notorious

Blackwater Bay is also in the city, which many fans will remember from one of Game of Thrones’ most action-

packed and exhilarating episodes.

SevilleThe beautiful and historic city of Seville has been

chosen to feature in season five of Game of Thrones, which is due to screen on HBO next spring. The city will more than likely portray the fictional Kingdom of Dorne, which has not been featured in the ground-

breaking series until now.Seville is available on a range of Western

Mediterranean itineraries, including some cruises sailing to the sun-soaked Canary Islands. A stay in

the city offers the opportunity for fans of the show to scout some of the upcoming locations, which include

the Alcazar of Seville – one of the world’s oldest palaces still in use – currently believed to be the

setting for the Water Gardens of Dorne.

This is perfect for the family - with water slides, pools, kids clubs and more

This smaller more intimate ship is exclusively for adults

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has revealed that it will no longer charge guests staying in its top seven suite classes for internet access from 1st January 2015. Members of Regent’s loyalty program who have achieved gold status or higher will also get unlimited internet access, regardless of their suite selection. At the moment, guests who book Concierge Class or above will get between 30 and 500 minutes of free internet.

The line has stated that the move to provide free internet coincides with its recent multi-million dollar upgrade, which has seen Regent double its available bandwidth and expand its Wi-Fi connection across all of its vessels.

Desmond Tutu to sail with Crystal

World-famous peace and human rights activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu will bring his perspective of South Africa, and the rest of the world, aboard Crystal Cruises’ 13th March 2015 cruise to Tutu’s African homeland. The Archbishop will share personal insights and stories as part of a complimentary lecture and Q&A session with guests on a variety of topics close to his heart.

Vice President of Entertainment for Crystal Cruises Brett Bullock commented on Tutu’s role aboard the ship, saying: “Our inquisitive guests are engaged travellers who will relish the rare opportunity to experience South Africa through the eyes of one of the country’s most precious sons...and perhaps take some of his inspirational spirit home with them.”

Oceania Cruises has announced that French author and TV chef Jacques Pépin will be on-board the Oceania Riviera for a one-off culinary voyage in July next year. The famed chef will be aboard Oceania’s 11 night Iberian Inspiration cruise.

Pépin, who is currently the cruise line’s executive culinary director – bringing his award-winning commitment to good food and drink to the cruise line’s restaurants at sea – will be providing guests aboard the Oceania Riviera with complimentary cooking demonstrations and guest lectures, as well as taking part in book signings and paid cookery classes in Riviera’s Bon Appetit culinary centre.

What’s NewFOR 2014

Oceania ships return from refurbishment

Oceania Cruises’ three Regatta Class ships – Regatta, Nautica and Insignia – have all returned from refurbishment after a $50 million makeover carried out this summer – the largest renovation in the line’s history. This thorough refurbishment was planned to bring the ships up to date with Oceania’s two newest ships, the Marina and Riviera, in order to create a full fleet of sleek, modern vessels.

All three ships have benefitted from new décor across their public areas, including the Terrace Grill, which has also received a new grill, so guests can enjoy an exquisite range of new cuisine; from gourmet lamb chops to delicious lobster tails. The ships now also

boast a new Baristas coffee lounge, providing the perfect venue in which to relax with a hot drink and socialise with fellow guests.

The vessels’ staterooms have also been decorated with original artwork, whilst Owner’s and Vista suites have new luxury bathroom facilities, providing guests with an attractive and opulent place to retreat whilst at sea.

In addition, the Grand Dining Rooms and Toscana speciality restaurants have been expanded on all three of the Regatta Class ships, and the Canyon Ranch SpaClub has also been upgraded – gaining a new steam room and changing areas.

Regent Seven Seas has begun construction on its latest cruise ship – Seven Seas Explorer – which is due to set sail in the summer of 2016. Catering for just 750 passengers per voyage, the vessel will offer plenty of space, as well as a high staff-to-guest ratio.

Although the first piece of steel has only recently been cut, some details about this new ship have nevertheless emerged. She will feature a range of designer suites, alongside stylish public areas, including the line’s signature nine-deck atrium, six gourmet restaurants and two-story Explorer Theatre.

Ultra-luxury line Seabourn has recently confirmed plans to launch a fourth mid-scale vessel towards the latter half of 2016. The as yet un-named ship is set to be modelled on the three most recent vessels in line’s fleet – Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Soujourn and Seabourn Quest – and will share their many of their successful features.

Earlier in the year, Seabourn announced that it would be selling the smaller half of its fleet – namely Seabourn Pride, Spirit and Legend – to fellow luxury line Windstar Cruises and the new vessel is set to replace the capacity lost when these vessels leave the Seabourn fleet.

Silversea’s all-suite luxury expedition ship Silver Galapagos arrived in dry dock in Panama this summer for a complete refurbishment, with all suites and corridors receiving full upgrades.

Renovations will also include a new blue-and-beige colour scheme for the Explorer Lounge, with the focus on creating a consistent look across the interior design of Silversea’s expedition vessels.

The refurbishment is the second in as many years, with the first makeover taking place in 2013 to give Silver Galapagos a new massage room, salon, fitness centre and Jacuzzi on deck – along with marble en-suite bathrooms and an additional outdoor restaurant named The Grill.

You could spend hours and hours browsing the seemingly infinite number of shops and stalls along the neon-soaked streets of Tokyo’s most diverse and well-known shopping districts. The ports and islands of the South Pacific each boast their own distinctive character – and Tahiti’s capital of Papeete is no exception. This blissful haven boasts a timeless allure and is easy to navigate on foot, creating one of the archipelago’s most sought-after destinations.

The region’s beaches are perhaps Papeete’s most popular attraction, offering visitors the chance to relax and play on the soft sand or in the crystal clear ocean waters. Papeete’s stunning waterfront is also home to a plethora of wonderful features, from tempting local food stalls and friendly bars, to large areas of green grass and carnival-like attractions.

As Tahiti’s capital city, Papeete also boasts a wealth of bustling shopping districts, and the island’s most sought-after souvenir is a local black pearl – the ultimate luxury Tahitian accessory. There are, however, many fibreglass imitations available in shops across the city, so look for a certification of authenticity if you’re hoping to purchase the real thing.

Travellers with a preference for the active lifestyle should also take advantage of the range of exhilarating water sports available along Papeete’s scenic coastline. Everything from sailing, surfing and water skiing to snorkelling and scuba diving is on offer here,

The bigINTERVIEW

At SixStarCruises.co.uk, we offer a range of great deals and are always taking bookings for voyages with luxury cruise line Azamara Cruises, so we caught up with the line’s Managing Director for the UK and Ireland Richard Twynam to

learn more about the Azamara experience.

Tell us a bit about your background and how you got involved with AzamaraWith 20 years’ experience in the travel industry I’ve held senior roles for airlines and tour operators. In 2010 I joined Virgin Holidays Cruises as Managing Director and a few years later I launched the Kuoni cruise programme. In Autumn 2013, I was delighted to be approached by Larry Pimintel to become Azamara Club Cruise’s first ever Managing Director for UK & Ireland.

How would you describe the typical Azamara guest? The Azamara customer is a true adventurer who loves to explore and get involved in local culture, whilst enjoying the luxury of returning to a five-star experience on board. Our typical guests are in their 50s and are affluent and erudite, they like functional luxury, and enjoy staying in boutique hotels.

What makes the Azamara cruising experience stand out?Our two boutique ships, Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, carry a maximum of just 694 guests, this means that we can sail to less-travelled ports that the bigger ships cannot access, for instance the beautiful port of Kotor in Montenegro. We have a global reach and visit diverse and unique ports to ensure that all destination interests are catered for.

Azamara’s once-in-a-lifetime voyages take in remarkable destinations, events and holiday celebrations. For example, this New Year, guests of Azamara Journey will enjoy unforgettable New Year’s Eve fireworks while anchored off Copacabana Beach.

Guests can also enjoy longer stays, more overnights and night touring to enable a richer travel experience and the opportunity to see a destination come alive at night.

How does Azamara help its guests to experience a destination? In each destination, we offer a range of shore excursions and AzAmazing Evenings to offer the best access into the destinations we visit; our new Land Discoveries programmes, Insider Access and Nights and Cool Places provide a truly authentic experience to travel deeper into local life.

With Insider Access, guests meet locals and share experiences designed to deepen their understanding and appreciation of local culture. It’s private touring for just 12 people. These small groups visit private homes and get to the meet the people that live there, for instance in Rembrandt's house in Amsterdam, our guests get to use Rembrandt’s original printing presses.

Nights and Cool Places is all about after-dinner activities that highlight the unique characteristics of our ports of call. Carefully curated tours celebrate the arts, architecture and scenery that are best experienced after night falls. I’m very keen to try our tour to the Picasso Museum in Malaga.

What’s your most memorable cruising experience? So far it would be taking breakfast with my wife, on our first break away from our new baby, sitting in Windows restaurant on Azamara Quest, moored off Monte Carlo.

And your favourite destination?I get asked this a lot. Either the Cinque Terre in Italy or anywhere in Asia, as my wife and I have both travelled and lived there.

How about your favourite cruising dish?I’m not sure there is one dish. What I love is authentic tasty food, so a fresh buffalo mozzarella salad, or authentic Asian noodles are a favourite.

See fantastic Azamara deals, videos and more atSixStarCruises.co.uk

Tell us more about AzAmazing EveningsThey’re hosted on each voyage (excluding transatlantic voyages) and are a complimentary, bespoke, once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers exclusive access to a landmark for one night only and showcases the best of local culture through dance, music, theatre and cuisine in gorgeous settings.

In August we held our first AzAmazing Evening in the UK at Liverpool Cathedral. Guests enjoyed an exclusive, spectacular gala evening of music, with a performance from The Cavern Club Beatles, celebrating 50 years since The Beatles arrived in the USA.

What’s next for Azamara? We’re continuing to expand our voyages programme to take our guests to some of the world’s most intriguing destinations. In 2015, Azamara will sail to Australia for the first time, and will visit 16 maiden port calls including Osaka, Bali, Aruba & Curacao.

In addition, we’re due to launch a new programme called ‘Cruise Global Eat Local’ which will allow guests the opportunity to visit those hidden gem restaurants not usually frequented by tourists. This will further allow them the opportunity to enjoy an authentic experience of a destination and engage with local culture.

In 2016 we have 44 new maiden calls in Australia, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Europe and the West Indies.

Richard Twynam

Azamara Cruises prides itself on offering the finest gourmet cuisine in each of its exquisite on-board dining venues. The line employs a team of highly skilled expert chefs, whose only priority is to lovingly prepare all of the

on-board meals to the highest possible standards.

Whilst you may well have enjoyed Azamara’s range of delicious cuisine at your table, you may not know about the preparation that goes on behind the scenes.

We sent our colleague Rebecca Welsby on a tour of the galley on-board Azamara Journey. Here are her thoughts on the experience: “It was great to see how much planning and detail goes into every meal on a cruise, from carefully preparing the appetisers to sourcing specific produce at each port on the itinerary to make sure everything is as fresh as it can be.

"I was amazed to see that everything is made fresh on the day it is to be eaten, as with such a vast number of guests on-board, so much time and effort has to be put into each dish. Even though the food was already incredibly delicious, my tour of the galley made me appreciate it 10 times more!”

I was amazed to see that everything is made fresh on the

CruiseKITCHEN

Azamara Cruises’ ships have three main dining venues, including two speciality restaurants, as well as a host of casual cafes and grills. Aqualina offers a grand fusion of Mediterranean flavours across a diverse menu; Prime C serves tender and perfectly cooked cuts of beef alongside a range of fresh seafood and Discoveries Restaur-ant features a menu filled with classic dinner selections, each with a unique twist.

BurningQUESTIONS

There are certainly a lot of questions when it comes to cruising but because we pride ourselves on going that little bit further, our expert Cruise Concierge are on-hand through every stage of your booking - not

only to help you get the best out of your holiday but also to answer any questions that you may have.

When is the cheapest time to book a cruise? John, Norfolk

Early, when the lowest-priced staterooms and cabins are all still available and you’re likely to be able to secure one and benefit from an early booking discount. It can also work out cheap if you book very late but only if you’re lucky enough to find an unsold cabin and are flexible with regards to where and when you can travel. It’s also cheaper in the ‘low’ season of your chosen destination, as demand is not as high. Hannah Grey

How long will I have to wait before receiving a confirmation of my booking? Lucy, Glasgow

It depends on which line you travel with, but in most cases and certainly when you book your cruise with Cruise118.com or SixStarCruises.co.uk, you will receive confirmation of your booking within 24 hours of making it. You will receive a cruise line invoice and statement within 14 days from the date of your booking. Paul Bolton

Do cruise lines provide shuttle buses into town from the ports or is there an extra charge for them? Adam, London

All cruise lines will provide a shuttle service. In some cases, this may be included in the cost of your package depending on the cabin type and member status, or may be complimentary from the cruise line. Some cruise lines will charge extra for the shuttle buses. The price will depend on distance from the place of interest you want to visit. Prices will be available from the cruise line, if they are not included in your package. Passengers with mobility issues may be able to get priority use of these services. Jolie Royds

I’ve booked a fly-cruise with formal dress nights. What’s the best way to pack my suits? Or can I hire on-board? Steve, Cardiff

To keep your suits in the best shape, use a foldable suit bag with a shoulder strap. Not only will this free up valuable luggage space, you’ll also be able to take your suits on the plane as hand luggage and ensure they stay in good shape. A number of cruise lines also offer suit hire if you don’t have space or a suitable bag. Michelle Clarke

Where do small cruise ships dock in Monte Carlo? Can you explore the town on foot? What are the best places to visit? Sarah, Manchester

Monte Carlo is one of five sectors within Monaco and smaller cruise ships dock right in its famous harbour, which in itself is one of the must-sees when visiting the town. Monte Carlo is small and easily explorable on foot and the best places to visit aside from the harbour are the famous casino, the lively Casino Square, which is great for people and car watching, the impressive Opera House and, to get away from the hustle-bustle, the Japanese Gardens. Anthony Donovan

I’m going on a fjords cruise. Will I need kroner in Norway or are euros accepted? Dave, Carlisle

You will need kroner, as it is Norway’s official currency. Some shops in tourist areas do accept euros but you will get change in either kroner or euros, so kroner is always the best option. Anthony Donovan

Getting to Know Youby Rose Williams

Reader, what did you think when you first heard the expression? Is it a posh way of saying ‘sales staff’?

The word ‘concierge’ is often bandied about in the travel industry but what does it mean? I dragged the Shorter Oxford Dictionary from its place in my husband Charlie’s study; blew off the cobwebs and found ‘concierge’ defined as: “The custodian of a house, castle or prison.” So how has it become linked to hotels and the travel industry? I asked James Cole, Managing Director of Cruise118.com, SixStarCruises.co.uk and RiverVoyages.com why they use the expression. He told me that their interpretation of ‘concierge’ is “someone who looks after customers and goes the extra mile to ensure that they, the customer, get the cruise they want – and more besides.”

In pursuit of my understanding the role of the Cruise Concierge, I was invited into the main office of the company (WTH UK) to spend an afternoon with the sales team. I had a great time; the knowledgeable, friendly team were welcoming and keen to talk about the way they interact with their customers.

I need to pause here and take us back to the first issue of this magazine and my first article and remind myself that the main intention of this regular column is to “better inform new and experienced cruisers about different aspects of cruising”. With this original statement in mind, I focused my questions around the best use cruisers can make of their time with their Cruise Concierge.

The budget: Be realistic and tell the Cruise Concierge how much you have budgeted for your cruise holiday. When I was discussing this with the team, I thought about the house-hunting programmes on the television, where the presenter pushes the potential buyer over their upper limit. Have no fear, this will not happen with your Cruise Concierge. They will keep within the limits you set them. Even so, their job is not easy, particularly when they are given a price guide of £250 for a one-week cruise. I can hear you scoff; but I heard the conversation.

The itinerary: Let me be upfront; geography was not my best subject at school. With this in mind, Charlie and I have bought a globe of the world. We tell friends it is so that we can show our grandchildren where we are intending to travel, but as you may have guessed, it is really for me to understand the path of our journeys. I blame air travel for my lack of understanding of which country is where on the map. Booking a cruise requires a more informed knowledge of geography; asking the Cruise Concierge to find a one-week cruise that sets sail from Newcastle to the Eastern Mediterranean is not an option – and with a spin of my globe, I now understand why.

Clarity with dates: This is particularly relevant with cruises which include a flight to the departure port. Quoting for a cruise with a flight is not an exact science. Those of you who have independently booked flights on the internet will know how costs can fluctuate in the blink of an eye. Cruise Concierge can

give a more accurate estimate of cost if they can look at flights on specific dates.

Excursions: One recent innovation for the company has been working with an organisation that specialises in booking excursions. This service can save customers up to 60 per cent of the cost of booking on-board. Your Cruise Concierge will have details of the availability of the excursions on offer.

Contact with your Cruise Concierge: The aim of the service is to be personal and to meet your individual needs. Speaking to a specific person is not always possible but speaking to your named Cruise Concierge’s buddy or a person in their team is a viable alternative. A worthwhile piece of advice is to ask your Cruise Concierge for the name of their buddy so that you have a second person to talk to. Another suggestion is to email before you call so that you are aware of your Cruise Concierge’s availability. If your named person is out of the office, they will have left an out-of-office contact and the date or time of their availability.

Following my enjoyable and informative visit, my best advice is get to know your Cruise Concierge and let them take the anxiety out of booking your next cruise holiday. Have a great time cruising.

I decided that it would be a good idea to find out exactly what a Cruise Concierge was, so I took a trip to meet the team and learn more.

You’re InvitedAs a company, we regularly host a number of events that explore cruising, taking place in a range of locations from chic city-centre

venues to exclusive country hotels. Many events are also held aboard the cruise ships themselves, where you can enjoy a tour and often

sample the food on-board.

Every event is different, whether in a hotel with refreshments or on a ship, but typically you’ll be able to meet our Cruise Concierge in person,

along with a representative of a cruise line, and enjoy a presentation that details the typical on-board experience and the best destinations you can sail to. And of course, every event has exclusive deals for you,

ranging from discounted fares to exclusive extra benefits.

Past eventsRecently we’ve held a number of ship visits around the country for

cruise lines including Celebrity, Oceania, Regent and Crystal, in port cities such as Southampton, Liverpool, Belfast and Glasgow. We’ve

also been all over the country with events in hotels in the Lake District, Aberdeenshire, Dorset, Rutland and Kent, among many others, and the

feedback for all of these has been fantastic.

Upcoming eventsOn the run up to Christmas we certainly aren’t slowing down, with ship visits still available as well as presentations in every corner of the UK

for many of our favourite luxury cruise brands.

I look forward to personally welcoming you to these events if you would like to attend. I’ve worked on ultra-luxury cruise ships myself in the past, so it is a passion that I love to share, and I find that each

event is enriching not only for our guests but for the cruise lines – and indeed for me and my team. If you want to know more, I’d love to invite

you to an event.

What TO WEAR

There’s a lot to think about when packing for a cruise because, as well as clothes and footwear fit for our destinations, we need evening wear if our cruise has formal nights as well as swimwear and poolside clothes if we’re travelling when the weather’s fine. However, there are some specific things to consider when sailing to certain cruise regions and as the Far East is popular during

the cooler months, I thought it would be a good idea to take a closer look at what to wear there.

Dressing for the weatherCruises tend to avoid the Far East in the summer for a reason but even in September, you can expect top temperatures of between 28-30°C in countries like China, Hong Kong and Japan. From then on right through to March it gets progressively cooler but even into October it tends to stay in the late teens to early 20s, so you could find yourself waking your shorts and t-shirts from their UK wardrobe hibernation.

Later in the year, what to wear depends on which countries you are visiting. For example, China in December is distinctly seasonal, with temperatures not getting above 3°C, but in Japan, you can still enjoy temperatures of between 10 and 12°C. If you’re in Vietnam you’ll find Ho Chi Minh City distinctly balmy, with typical temperatures of anything from 21-32°C. Pack a lightweight waterproof, as there’s always a chance of showers, but by and large, summer is the rainy season in the Far East.

Exploring attireAs well as being blown away by the spectacle of some of the world’s most bustling metropolises, the Far East is of course about history and culture. With that in mind, you’ll need to make sure you pack some strong walking shoes fit for exploring. From Cambodia’s awesome Angkor Wat to the Great Wall of China itself, there’s a wealth of history to explore and you’ll enjoy it all the more with something suitable on your feet.

A big part of the Far East excursion experience on many cruises is temple visits, so you’ll want to make sure you dress respectfully. That means no bare shoulders and knee-length shorts or dresses. Lightweight slacks are a good all-round choice. In fact, above-the-knee shorts are a general no-no in South East Asia and often seen as disrespectful. It’s also worth noting that in Thailand, most temples require that you remove your shoes before entering, so avoid taking anything with elaborate laces.

We have an excellent selection of Far East cruises available at both Cruise118.com and SixStarCruises.co.uk and some fantastic itineraries exploring the Mekong and Irrawaddy at RiverVoyages.com

What’s NewFOR 2015

Avalon announces new Asian itineraries

Luxury river cruise specialist Avalon Waterways has recently unveiled its range of 2015 itineraries for the Far East. In a first for the line, the programme will offer exotic explorations of Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River aboard a newly designed suite vessel, the appropriately named Avalon Myanmar. The Irrawaddy flows from north to south through Myanmar, passing through a number of terrific towns and cities including Mandalay and Bagan.

Meanwhile, Avalon Myanmar’s sister ship – the Avalon Siem Reap – will explore Vietnam and Cambodia via the River Mekong. Both rivers are brimming with cultural and natural wonders and Avalon’s

latest itineraries will showcase them perfectly, offering river cruisers the opportunity to experience local life in each new port and truly immerse themselves in the region’s fascinating culture and heritage.

Avalon Myanmar and Avalon Siem Reap have been specifically designed to sail in a number of areas previously unexplored by other lines, such as the Upper Northern Irrawaddy, an area of outstanding natural beauty, and the stunning harbour of Ho Chi Minh City. Both vessels will also offer the same luxurious design found aboard the line’s European Suite Ships, as well as the same level of personalised service and sophisticated dining experiences.

AmaWaterways has announced plans to launch two new ships in 2015, the AmaVista and AmaSerena, which will operate voyages along the Main, the Rhine and the Danube Rivers.

The new vessels will both carry 164 passengers in luxurious modern staterooms, set to feature new twin balconies – combining a French balcony with a step-out balcony, offering stunning views, whatever the weather.

The ships will also feature a heated pool and poolside bar alongside a fitness centre, glass lifts and salon facilities. In addition, guests will have the choice of restaurant dining or bistro options out on deck, along with a chef’s specials venue.

Emerald Waterways launched the second of their innovative Space Ships – the Emerald Star – back in late May 2014 and the vessel has been impressing travellers throughout summer with a number of exciting river sailings.

The ship boasts an array of cutting-edge features including an on-board cinema and a heated pool with retractable roof, as well as on-board fitness, therapy and salon areas. The Emerald Star also features two elegant dining venues and a marvellous new balcony suite design.

Accommodating 182 guests, the vessel will operate a range of river cruises, travelling along the major waterways of Europe and visiting fascinating destinations across the continent.

Riviera Travel will introduce their latest river cruise ship, the MS Jane Austen, in 2015. The vessel will have a maximum capacity of 148 and boasts a terrific collection of features, including two bespoke restaurants and a purpose-built spa, alongside more unusual facilities such as a putting green and splash pool on the spacious sun deck.

One of the ship’s most exciting features is the forward viewing area, a brilliant aspect of the sun deck which offers passengers spectacular panoramas of inspiring landscapes.

Founded in the 11th century as a small fishing village and formerly known as Rangoon, Yangon is often featured within Irrawaddy River itineraries due to its fascinating historical background and captivating ambience. Take a walking tour of the city’s many incredible ancient landmarks, which include beautiful pagodas and spectacular Buddhist temples – many of which have stood for thousands of years.

Whilst in Yangon, be sure to experience the hustle and bustle of a vibrant marketplace, and sample some of the region’s unique cuisine at one of the city’s traditional restaurants, where delectable dishes offer an authentic taste of local culture.

Yandabo is a small, quaint village with a very interesting past. Although typical of the many tiny settlements located along the scenic banks of the Irrawaddy River, Yandabo is well-known as the location for the signing of the first treaty ending the 19th century First Anglo-Burmese War in 1826.

Nowadays, the village has a population of around a thousand people and is a popular calling point on river cruises through Myanmar. One of the settlement’s main modern-day industries is pottery making, and river cruise guests can take the opportunity to spend time at a pottery workshop to see how skilled local workers produce fine ceramic crafts.

YANGON

As one of Myanmar’s most historically important districts, the ancient city of Bagan is a must-see destination along the Irrawaddy River. For a real insight into Myanmar’s cultural and religious heritage, visit the renowned Bagan Archaeological Zone, home to thousands of ancient temples, pagodas, monasteries and other buildings dating from between the 11th and 13th century – recognised as a golden age for the first united kingdom of Burma.

If you get the chance, get up early to observe the sun rise over the Irrawaddy in Bagan and you will not regret it. This spectacular view is sure to live long in the memory and is a breathtaking experience not to be missed.

BAGAN

Mandalay is a deeply spiritual and historic city – home to over half of Myanmar’s population of monks. A full-day tour of this great city is often included as part of Irrawaddy river cruise itineraries, leading guests to all of the region’s most iconic and historically significant sites. Visit the amazing Kuthodaw Pagoda – said to contain the world’s largest book, a Buddhist scripture inscribed on over 700 marble slabs – amongst a plethora of other intriguing temples and grand palaces.

You may also get the chance to visit a local tapestry and wood carving workshop. Here, you can learn more about these thriving Burmese industries and see skilled native artisans producing incredibly beautiful carvings and weavings.

Epitomising variety and old-world charm, Thailand is the perfect destination for those looking to travel further afield than the usual luxury European destinations and try something a little more exotic. Whether you are searching for relaxing solitude on the flank of a verdant hillside, indulgent beach-side relaxation, or a cultural encounter with the ancient East, Thailand is a compendium of riches patiently waiting to be explored.

Why Thailand?Perhaps the most emphatic reason to choose Thailand for your well-earned retreat is the sheer diversity of holiday options offered within the country. Travellers cannot fail to find their own perfect idyll within this sprawling expanse, and the opportunity to take part in a tour or multi-destination holiday allows travellers to experience everything

that the country has to offer in an unforgettable pre-planned adventure. Vibrant metropolises, secluded beach stays, island-hopping adventures and stately elephant treks; these are just a small selection of the delights that await you in this stunning region of the world.

In addition to the variety of experiences available, Thailand is a fantastic location in terms of value for money, with the cost of luxury living available at a fraction of the price of other global destinations with no sacrifice in terms of opulence. This allows travellers to experience the full force of this animated and vivid utopia without compromise or concession.

Thailand’s travel infrastructure is without a doubt the best in the region, making it a simple endeavour to tailor-make a trip to your specific requirements, whether you are new to South East Asia or you are returning for a second helping of this distinctive and enchanting area.

Where in Thailand?

Where to travel within Thailand depends largely on what you are hoping to get from your stay, with an incredible range of destinations and resorts that provide everything from unkempt and natural relaxation, to chic, modern living. Thailand’s beating heart and cultural centre is undoubtedly Bangkok, where it is easy for travellers to immerse themselves in the seemingly contradictory diversity of Thailand. Ancient architecture accompanies gleaming skyscrapers and old-world charm meets contemporary luxury in this wonderfully incongruous metropolis.

Bangkok can also act as your gateway to further Thai destinations, with a wide range of serene coastal locations providing the perfect antidote to bustling city life, each with their own individual energy and atmosphere. Koh Samui is a classically natural paradise of white sand beaches fringed with lush tropical greenery, as is the majestic island of Phuket. In comparison, the smaller island of Koh Phi Phi is a destination of astounding natural beauty in the form of towering cliff faces and undulating topography, providing a more thrilling and sublime holiday location that is more typical of the Krabi region in general.

What to do? The Thai lifestyle is inherently different from the traditions of the West, meaning that a whole host of new and exciting experiences are waiting between its sun-drenched shores. The exploration of ancient ruins provides a fascinating glimpse into Thailand’s cultural past, with Khao Yai National Park in the north, and Khao Sok National Park in the south, providing incredible examples of ancient beauty. Floating markets (such as the Damnoen Saduak in Ratchaburi) offer more opportunities to experience authentic Thai culture as well as providing a treat for the senses.

Travelling to Thailand at the right time allows visitors to experience the annual festivals that take place, with visitors in November able to enjoy the floating lantern festival of Loi Krathong and visitors in April having the chance to experience Songkran (Thai New Year).

Visitors looking to see more of the country can enjoy a trip to the Golden Triangle, the point at which the Ruak River meets the Mekong and where the countries of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet.

These incredible sights offer plenty of options for the more active traveller, whilst those more interested in pampering and relaxation can enjoy the serene luxury beach resorts and spa retreats that pepper Thailand’s coastline.

I hope that you enjoyed your summer. ‘What summer?’, I hear some of you ask. If you are looking to escape to a warmer climate in the luxurious

surroundings of a feature-packed cruise ship, here’s a little inspiration:

Cruising &COCKTAILS

With the Caribbean being a popular cruise destination in the coming months, it would be remiss of me not to revisit the versatile and diverse spirit that is rum.

The history of rum is well documented, so here are a few snippets of information. In 1493, Columbus left settlers on the island of Hispaniola, who planted sugar cane from which rum is produced. Sugar cane was planted and grown on almost every Caribbean island.

The term rum could come from several places. One theory is that it comes from saccharum – the Latin name for sugar – shortened to rum. Alternatively, the roemer or ‘rummer’ was a large drinking vessel used by Dutch seamen.

In 1888, Don Andres Brugal founded Brugal Rum in the Dominican Republic, a country on the island of Hispaniola. Since 1888, five generations of the Brugal family Maestros Roneros have continued to oversee the crafting of Brugal Rum, making it the number one rum in the Caribbean and Spain.

If the Caribbean is your ideal destination, then you may want to try cocktails containing rum. A great suggestion would be a mojito, as it is refreshing and cooling. For a great aperitif rum cocktail, why not try a daiquiri, and if you have a sweeter tooth a strawberry Ddaiquiri is the perfect option. There are also other options in the form of pina coladas or mai tais.

Brugal Swizzle1. Take a highball glass and place a slice of lime,

lemon and orange into the bottom along with 1 tsp of sugar and muddle them together.

2. Add two dashes of Angostura bitters and 1 ½ measures of rum (Brugal Anejo Dominican Rum would be my choice).

3. Add crushed ice to the glass and swizzle all the ingredients together.

4. Top off with ginger ale.

5. Top off with more crushed ice and a slice of citrus fruit.

We all hear tales of wines sampled on holiday that were utterly fantastic, on that gorgeous last night with

the sun setting on the Mediterranean, but they just don’t have the same pizzazz when opened on a cold

wet evening in the UK.

My recent fantastic trip to Rhodes highlighted the huge leaps made in the last decade by countries like Greece with their production of quality wines. Forget dodgy Retsina – Greek wines are now some of the most exciting and interesting in the world.

Although there are some very good reds available, it is the whites that are really causing a stir with two things to look out for – the grape Assyrtiko and the island of Santorini.

Assyrtiko is capable of producing vibrant whites with intense minerality and bright acidity. Think Sancerre but then throw in a whole load of zingy citrus fruit. The island of Santorini, with its ancient vineyards, unique climate and volcanic soils, is at the forefront of this revolution in Greek wine.

The best example is the Multi Decanter Gold Medal-winning Assyrtiko by Gaia Wild Ferment, from Santorini. This amazing wine is made by letting the natural yeasts that exist in any vineyard do their work – hands-off winemaking at its peak. The flavours this produces are stunning, a wine of intense orange blossom with spice and oak all combining perfectly. At £16.99, an absolute must try.

Next up is the delicious variety Malagousia, a grape saved from extinction by the efforts of Vangelis Gerovassiliou in the 1980s. The Ktima Gerovassiliou Malagousia is as good as it gets with the 2013 vintage winning the Decanter Regional Trophy this year. Floral and fresh like Viognier, yet with depth and complexity from skin contact and time in oak, this is just a superb white wine. £15.49 a bottle.

We also have two other Greek whites in the Whalley Wine Shop, the Notios White blend made by Gaia (£11.99) and Biblia Chora Ktima white (£16.49) made by Gerovassiliou; an elegant blend of Assyrtiko and Sauvignon Blanc that you could easily mistake for Sancerre as it has such pure minerality. We have the red wine Avaton from the same winery which is deep, rich and savoury - perfect for those with a liking for old-fashioned Bordeaux blends (£13.99).

Holiday READING

CruiseQUIZ

What could be better than devouring a good book while you relax on deck? You could be sailing to the sunny Caribbean while you journey to the far side of the world between the pages, or back in time, or

maybe even into someone else’s soul...

TemeraireNaomi Novik

Temeraire is a little bit like ‘Sharpe’ or ‘Master and Commander’ with dragons. For many people this would be reason enough to want to read it (like me) and it’s definitely a good yarn. Coming into

possession of a dragon’s egg after a battle with a French ship, our hero

Captain Laurence becomes the reluctant guardian of a mysterious breed of

hatchling. When it imprints itself on him, Laurence is forced to give up his bright

future to join the Aerial Corps and captain the fighting dragon, Temeraire. The

dragon lore is there, the combat and the drama are suitably action-packed... but

personally, something is lost for me in the over-tender treatment of Laurence’s and Temeraire’s bond. All in all though, a great

premise and well worth a read.

To Sell Is HumanDaniel H Pink

When I first bought To Sell Is Human I thought I’d be getting a book about

straight-up marketing but that couldn’t be further from the truth. As the title suggests, and as the book explains, everyone on Earth works in sales –

whether you’re persuading a mate that your holiday plans are the better option,

or listening to one of the kids trying to convince you that whatever they’re accused of breaking, losing or spilling, they didn’t do it. A well-researched and

very enlightening read, and so much more than just a guide on how to sell.

I, LuciferGlen Duncan

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series and Constantine will definitely find something to get their teeth into with I, Lucifer. This is the tale of the Devil made flesh, and is hugely fun both as a story and as a

mirror held up to our own nature and our ideas about sin. Given one last chance to repent and be welcomed back into the

light, providing he can live a good life as a mortal, Lucifer negotiates a hedonistic trial period and decides to tell his side of the story – and learns a little about what it’s like to be human along the way. For

me at least, I, Lucifer is one of those truly unputdownable reads.
