Crossref for PreprintsGeoffrey BilderDirector of Strategic Initiatives@gbilder
~ 1999-2000
“Cannot assign Crossref DOIs to duplicative
works”
Except for….
Reprints
Translations
Exceptional manifestations
“publish ahead of print”
“online ahead of print”“article in progress”
“article in press”“online first”
etc.
Which basically left preprints..
“Cannot assign Crossref DOIs to duplicative
works”
Like a version
submission
acceptance
publication
authors original accepted manuscript
postprint
u-vor/e-vor
JAV
Common Usagehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preprint
submitted manuscriptunder review
Citation record
preprint final published version
version of record
u-vor/e-vor
preprint
updatedenhanced
online with DOI
publisher citable version
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postprint
The new rules…
a CR DOI assigned to an accepted manuscript, must be assigned by the CR member who accepted the manuscript for publication.
When a CR DOI is assigned to an accepted manuscript (AM), the same Crossref DOI should be used for the version of record (VOR) as well.
Preprints may be assigned CR DOIs by the CR member hosting the preprint.
preprint DOIs must link to published version DOI if/when there is one available
(crossref will provide tools to make this easier)
preprint versions must be labelled clearly as such
published DOIs may link to preprint version if/if it has a DOI
all Crossref tools and APIs will privilege later versions
Thanks

Early Content RegistrationJennifer LinDirector of Product Management@jenniferlin15
Current Issues
• broken links from unregistered DOIs undermine trust in persistent links and availability of content• publishers-
• cannot meet funder mandates that focus on acceptance point for reporting• advance publicity & press leave out DOIs or lead to broken
links• researchers - cannot provide evidence of all publications in
grant and employment applications• funders & institutions - cannot fully track research they
support

Status: ORCID Auto-UpdateChuck KoscherDirector of Technology@ckoscher
How’s it going?
Articles with at least one author ORCID:Publishers depositing ORCIDs:Requests sent to authors for permission:Permission not given (or no response):Works pushed to author profiles:
363,478480
256,667155,300153,254
Issues to consider
When publishers update their deposited metadata, should Crossref re-push the work to the author’s profile, should the author be notified?
What can be done to improve the conversion rate for permission requests?
Encourage publishers to validate the ORCID given by the author.
