Young Explorer ProgramKids of all ages love our Young Explorer program, where they’re grouped with trav-elers their own age for fun and educational activities while adults attend faculty lectures. They’ll enjoy thought-provoking discussions and mind-bending games that fuel creativity, all while building new friendships. Our Young Explorer leaders are all recent Stanford grads and Stanford Sierra Camp counselors and are pros at understanding and adapting to the personalities and interests of each young explorer—which means that everyone has a great time.

Faculty LeaderIvan Lupic , who joined Stanford Univer-sity as an assistant professor of English in 2013, is an English literature and Shake-spearean scholar with research interests in the European Renaissance, book history and manuscript studies, theater histo-ry, and the intersection of literature and political thought. His latest book, Subjects of Advice: Drama of Counsel from More to Shakespeare, was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2019. Having grown up in the Balkans and lived in Croatia for much of his life, Professor Lupic has seen firsthand the changes that have impacted this region over the last few decades. In recent years, he has written several articles on the literary cul-ture of the Ragusan Republic, a maritime republic centered in the city of Dubrovnik that flourished in the 15th and 16th centuries. This work forms the founda-tion for his new book project, The Illyrian Renaissance: Literature in the European Borderlands. During our program, his lectures will focus on the history, culture and literature of Croatia.

To assist you in making these independent arrangements, we will send you information with your confirmation materials on when to arrive and depart. What to ExpectWe consider this program to be a moderately strenuous program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Some days require early-morning starts and/or go into the late evenings; we often have a full schedule of excursions, lectures and special events. Daily excursions involve one to three miles of walking, with tours as long as three hours on city streets, which are, in some cases, uneven or cobblestoned. Many sites and buildings do not have elevators and also do not allow buses to pull up in front, thus requiring a walk of several minutes, sometimes uphill, to reach the entrance. Our journey requires travel by motor coach, with most drives no longer than 90 minutes. There are a few excursions by motorboat on this program and although these boat trips are brief, travelers sensitive to seasick-ness should be aptly prepared. Average temperatures in Croatia in late June range from the mid-70s (°F) to the mid-80s; come prepared for potentially hot weather. Although all of the hotels and motor coaches used in this program are air-conditioned, some of the museums and other sites we visit are not. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 6 years of age and older on this program. California Seller of Travel Program
