    CRIME PREVENTION TIPSSAFETY TIPS ON HOW TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM

    *BASIC INFORMATION ON DETERRING ROBBERS IN YOUR COMMUNIT

    VEHICLE SECURITY1. Park your car in a locked garage or other protected areas.2. As much as possible, park only in areas which are well-lighted and patrolled

    constantly.3. Before you get inside the car, walk around it and check for any signs of entry,

    anybody hiding in the backseat, and anything under the car.4. Lock your car every tume you leave it, even in locked garage.5. Equip your car with an intrusion alarm system and either a two-way radio or a

    telephone.

    *PROTECTION AGAINST CAR THIEVES AND CARNAPPERS

    DOS1. Install a warning device to deter carnappers/thieves.2. Lock your door and close your windows even while driving. When a stranger

    attemps to get in your car while at intersections, blow your horn and or/drive even if you have to violate traffic signals.

    3. Never rely on watch-your-car boys.4. Remember, an honest driver is the best guarantee for your vehicles safety. 5. Require police clearance, photography and character references from people

    applying as driver.6. When your ignition key is lost, change ignition switch at once.7. Instruct your driver not to stay in your car while parked. He can fall asleep list

    to the car radio or be so engrossed in reading comics or newspaper and be an e

    prey to armed carnappers. The driver should securely lock the car and stay at anear enough to have the car in sight.

    DONTs1. Dont leave valuables and/or packages inside your car. 2. Dont leave your car/other motor vehicle for long period of time especially at night.3. While driving & a motorist calls your a ttention to a flat tire, or that a car is on fire, do

    not stop. Drive on & stop at a safe distance or a place where there are people around.

    *PROTECTION AGAINST SNATCHERS, PICK POCKETS AND OTHER ROBBERS

    DOs1. Stay near people but stay away f rom drunks and groups of suspicious-looking

    people who could be threats to you.2. Stay in well-lighted areas and routes with uninterrupted pedestrian and vehicular

    traffic.3. Make a mental accounting of the contents of your bag and wallet so you could

    identify them when you fall victim to theft and the police recovers your personalvalues.

    4. Have a presence of mind & remember the description of the thief when vic timized.5. Keep your bag close to your body while inside cinema houses, churches, shopping

    malls and markets, as well as when walking in crowded areas.6. When held up, raise alarm only when it is safe.7. Always bring along a whistle with which t o get help during emergencies.8. Install a warning device in your vehicle which may alert law enforcement officers

    when you are being held-up or robbed.

    *PROTECTION AGAINST SWINDLERS

    DOs1. Always instruct your household to contact you or any member of the family

    whenever they receive telephone calls or other means of information regardinganything about the family. This could be a trick.

    2. Beware of street swindlers on the lookout for deals. Remember that there asuch thing as double-your-money ventures.

    DONTs

    1. Do not extend credit to persons whom you do not know and trust personally.2. Do not conned or sweet-talked into removing your earnings or other valuabl

    from safekeeping. Chances are you will loose them.3. Do not trust people especially those whom you barely know, who promise you

    income but requires you to withdraw your money from the bank.

    HOW TO SECURE YOUR HOMES

    DOS

    1. Lock all doors at all times, open windows just enough to allow entry of fresh air, notburglars.

    2. Instruct house helps not to entertain or allow strangers inside the house,3. When somebody knocks, verify his identity before unlocking your door, peepholes

    are very helpful for this purpose.

    4. When it is a repairman, serviceman. Or electrical inspector, etc carefully verify hisidentity. When in doubt call their main office.

    5. Cash and valuables are better deposited in banks.6. Check all electrical appliances before leaving your homes to preclude fires.7. Use drapes or curtains in windows to keep your valuable things like appliances,

    jewels etc to be out of sight from the outside.8. Record description; make serial numbers of facilities, equipment like appliances for

    easy identification.9. Before sleeping at night, see to it that all doors and windows are properly secured.10. When going on vacation, request a trusted neighbourhood to look over the safety of

    your house and to contact the police when an unusual incident occurs.11. If robbers were able to enter your house, try to quietly call the police by telephone.12. Remain calm, do not panic. Robbers/hold-uppers are dangerous especially if

    agitated because you panicked.13. If possible, try to talk it out with t he robber; delaying tactics can sometimes be useful.14. Get a good description of robbers; take note of peculiarities like tattoos, moles,

    manner of speech and physical defects.

    DONTS

    1. Do not admit stranger under any circumstances. If transactions are unavoidable, letthem stay away from the door to prevent visual observation of the contents andlayout of the house.

    2. Do not leave door keys in the flower pots, under doormat or in the mailbox.3. Do not leave bicycles, garden hose and other valuables scattered in the yard. These

    will invite robbers/thieves.

    RESIDENCE AND FAMILY SECURITY

    You should employ various security measures at your respectiveresidences. The following are some of the measure suggested:

    1. Household staff should be advised not to entertain queries made over the telepor from strangers as to information about the children and their parents. Likewthey should be advised to be alert for strangers loitering on foot or in parked vein the vicinity of the residence and be informed as to whom to ca ll to report the

    matters. They should also be advised to look out for suspicious-looking characwho may be posing as food vendors, garbage collectors, bottle and newspaperbuyers and the likes.

    2. Advise your children to refrain from playing/loitering on the roads outside yoresidence where they are highly-vulnerable for abduction. Advise your childrennever leave home without telling where they are going.

    3. Carefully check references of anyone you intent to employ as babysitter, domeshelper, gardener, driver or even security guard or bodyguard. It is possible thakidnappers could be utilizing said persons to infiltrate your residence so as to avital information.

    4. Make sure that anybody you leave your children with is responsible andtrustworthy.

    5. Ask your childrens school to help provide security. Along this line, ask or advschool authorities and staff employees on the following:

    a. Not to give out any information whatsoever about students.b. Avoid any kind of publicity in which students are named r their pictur

    shown.c. Not to release a student to someone other than his/her parents withou

    receiving authorization from a parent. In the high risk situation, it is goallow the child to speak to the parent on the phone authorizing to releaThis practice provides protection against kidnapers who call and claimthe childs parent.

    d. Report to the police if any stranger is seen in the automobile/jeep, theteacher should note its make, color, model and tag number and pass thinformation to the police.

    e. Help teachers closely supervise outside play periods.

    *PROTECTION AGAINST CELLPHONE SNATCHING

    DOs1. Buy cellphone only from authorized dealers.2. Record your cellphone serial numbers immediately after purchase.3. Always place your cellphone in your pocket or bag where it is not visible.4. If theres an urgent need for you to use your cellphone while outside, go to a place

    where you are more secure inside stores, near security guards, near police stations,inside offices, or even in comfort room cubicles.

    5. Always walk in well-lighted places. When walking alone, be on guard for personsfollowing you walk towards areas where there are people in case you might needhelp.

    6. Keep your bag with your cellphone inside close to your body.7. When in public vehicles, be alert for snatchers; suspicious passengers who come in

    by threes or fours and who position themselves beside/behind the driver, near theestribo, and one among the passengers.

    8. If you fall victim to snatchers, report to the police and to your cellphone providersimmediately.

    9. Always cooperate with the police and the barangay authorities.DONTs

    1. Do not display or use your cellphone in public as nuch as possible.2. Do not use your cellphone while riding a public utility bus or jeep.3. Do not show to anyone where you keep your cellphone while walking in public.4. Do not buy cellphone for your children who are not capable of serving it.5. Dont walk while texting.6. Do not place your cellphone near the window adjacent to a pathway or sidewalk.7. Dont buy second hand cellphone from a stranger.

    *COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

    1. A conscious, collective effort to maintain peace and order in the neighbourhoodmore effective than self or family-oriented approach to crime prevention.

    2. Good leadership and active participation of community members are vital.3. Regular crime prevention meetings should be held to discuss the most common

    modus operandi of criminals and thieves and the counter -measures against the4. Residence volunteers, in groups of two or three, can walk the streets in designa

    areas at specific hours.5. When a crime is in progress, notify the police and other volunteer groups.6. A witness to an on-going crime can alert neighbours by making noise or pre -

    arranged signals.7. If the ronda group is small, the time and area of the neighbourhood walk sho

    be known only to the leaders of the volunteers.

    *SECURITY OF OFFICE AND BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS

    DOs1. Provide vaults that are according to purpose. A vault for documents is not

    appropriate for cash.2. Change safe combination, especially when the personnel in charge of it has bee

    terminated.3. Cash left in the establishment should be placed in a safety vault, if possible, wi

    combination or time lock.4. Preferably, transport money in your car with an escort.5. Before closing time, check possible areas where robbers could hide, i.e. comfort

    closet, cabinet, etc.6. Install enough lights outside.7. Prune shrubbery plants around your establishment to window level.8. Reinforce glass doors and show windows with accordion type i.e., steel curta

    equipped with burglar proof locks.9. Install burglar alarms on all doors and windows not visible to outsiders and se

    before leaving.

    DONTs1. Do not leave the key in the safe if theres another person in the room.

    Do not keep large sum of money in office, keep only a minimum amousufficient to take care of the days need.
