Neighbourhood Profile: FRANKLIN AVENUE AND MAIN STREET

The main Municipal bus station for Fort McMurray is located at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Main Street. The total transit ridership in 2010 was 1,135,719 persons1. Transit operations commence at 5:45am and run throughout the day until 11:45pm. The business hours at this intersection range from 8am to 5pm, to 24 hours a day. The buses operate at 20 minute intervals, so there are periods with lots of people and periods when there are very few people.

The Salvation Army is another organization operating in the vicinity of the study area. The Salvation Army manages a mat program from September 1st through to the end of April. This is a wet program operating from 5pm to 8am and caters to those individuals who are under the influence of alcohol. The Salvation Army also operates a Shelter year round from 5pm to 8am. This is a dry service catering to men in need of transitional or temporary lodging.

The Municipality has experienced increasing economic growth as a result of the oil sands development. The current population of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is 104,338, which is anticipated to increase to 205,000 by 2028. Of the current population, approximately 76,797 reside in Fort McMurray2.
