EDWARD JOHN EYRE HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER APRIL 2020- PAGE 2

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT Dear parents, caregivers and community members,

I am happy to advise that I have been appointed the principal's role at EJEHS for the remainder of 2020.As a community we are all currently facing many challenges, in regards to COVID-19. I will make it a priority to ensure that I am making decisions, based on up-to-date information and directions from both the health and education departments. The focus for all staff is to ensure that an education program continues for our students. Parents seeking more information are encouraged to call the National Coronavirus Health Information line on 1800 020 080 or visit this website here.

As you may be aware, the Minster for Education has announced 4 pupil free days before Easter (6,7,8 and 9 April) for all South Australian schools and preschools. As a result of this, the EJEHS pupil free day scheduled for next Monday 30 March has been cancelled and all students are encouraged to attend on that day. Congratulations to Sophie Hamlyn who has won the position of Senior Leader Student Pathways for terms 2 and 3. Sophie will be working in the student pathways area while Belinda McEvoy is on maternity leave. We wish Belinda all

the best while she is on leave and look forward to seeing her when she returns in term 4. Chloe Lyons is also on maternity leave and will be retuning to Adelaide at the end of this term. We also take this opportunity to wish Chloe all the best with her future endeavours.

We have had to postpone the year 12 Formal, which was scheduled for Friday 19 June. The Formal will take place later in the year. I will work with the student leaders to set a new date, once the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.I believe that the following few weeks/months are going to be challenging for the community. It is really important that we take care of each other and support each other in whatever way we can. We need to minimise the stress and anxiety for our students and remain calm and positive. It is a fact that we are all going to have to live our lives a little differently for awhile and appreciate the small pleasures in life. For example spending time with family, pets or just sitting outside enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.Staff and students all know how much I like to share inspirational quotes, so here is a quote to end my Principal's report."You can't calm the storm... so stop trying. What you can do, is calm yourself. The storm will pass".If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the school on 8645 7677.

Tricia Richman Principal

At our last school assembly on Friday 6 March, I had great pleasure in presenting my first Principal's Award at EJEHS and for 2020. This Principal's Award was presented to Mikayla Herbert for her great understanding and knowledge of roles and responsibilities in the CHAT program, showing a strong display of confidence and leadership in her work.

Congratulations and well done Mikayla!

STUDENT AND SUBJECT UPDATE ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

The Aboriginal Education team have been busy making the school more inclusive and welcoming for Aboriginal families. We have been busy putting up acknowledgements to country, along with hanging our Aboriginal art work up around the school. Our teachers have also been incorporating Aboriginal perspectives into their curriculum and updating Aboriginal student's One Plans. Unfortunately, the Aboriginal meet and greet with Clontarf and the school has been postponed but we look forward to

when we can hold this in the future.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING To assist staff with the flexibilities in SACE and to help maximise student success, there have been a number of training opportunities available to staff. These trainings look at such things as flexibility in assessment, special provisions, flexibility in subjects and other strategies to help students be successful. The SACE board are currently working on more ways that they can support teachers and students to have flexible options.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONSpecial education is defined as teaching for students with learning needs that cannot be met by the standard Australian school curriculum. It may involve specialised exercises, subject matter or techniques appropriate to the needs of the child.Special needs education in Australia has an inclusive approach, where a child attends a general school, whenever possible. Education providers are required by law to make reasonable adjustments to allow a student with disabilities to be educated on the same basis as other students.Special education is delivered at EJEHS in regular classrooms with a modified curriculum or additional teaching support. If you would like to discuss the support your child is getting please contact the specific class teacher.

STAGE 1 ARTStudents spent the first part of the term developing their folio ideas, focusing on etching, drawing, pottery and painting. Over the next 4 weeks, students will create their own original major artworks inspired by their favourite artists, styles and preferred mediums. Students will also complete a practitioner’s statement outlining their starting points and influences, intended message and evaluation of their work.

STAGE 2 ART For the first part of term 1, students have been completing their Folio 1 for Stage 2 Visual Arts, researching, analysing and experimenting with art practices of their own choice. Students are now refining ideas and creating their Practical 1 artwork. Student's chosen areas of work include: digital illustration, ceramic sculpture,

photography, relief printing, acrylic and watercolour paints. These artworks will represent the student's own interests, passions and themes created in genres best suited to their own styles and techniques.

SACE IMPROVEMENT Whether you are continuing to attend school, or are studying at home remember to visit the SACE Website. Watch the message from Professor Martin Westwell and continue to stay in contact with your teacher through email so you can stay up-to-date with your learning.

DIGITAL LEARNINGWith the current pandemic it is more important than ever that students have access to Digital Learning. EJEHS staff are working very hard to provide all learning through DayMap or Microsoft Teams. The DayMap parent portal will be opened by Tuesday 31 March. Please watch our facebook page or website so you know when it will be open. An email will be sent with username and password requirements for you to access this. If you have not given the school an email address it is very important that you do this so you can help

monitor your child’s work. If you require any assistance once the portal is open please phone the IT department at the school.

SACE ART SHOW 2020The SACE Art Show 2020 will showcase selected art and design work created by year 12 Visual Arts students in 2019. More than 100 pieces including paintings and drawings, sculptures, jewellery, costumes and multimedia works completed as part of students' South Australian

Certificate of Education art and design studies, will be on display. The exhibition can be viewed via virtual tour

CHAT Students have been involved in a number of catering events and participated in the running of the Eyre Café as part of the CHAT program. Students catered for the WASP parent information night and SAASTA lunch for regional students, which allowed them to develop their numeracy skills through recipe conversions and budgeting. With the opening of the café to invited groups, students gained experience in customer service and cooking meals to order. The students’ skills have continued to improve and they should be very proud of their achievements.

STUDENT AND SUBJECT UPDATE CHILD STUDIES

Throughout term 1, the Child Studies students have been working closely with the CHAT students to offer a crèche service to invited guests. The Child Studies students have used their class time to prepare learning activities for children of all ages. Some of these include painting boomerangs and Aboriginal flags for the cultural corner in the crèche, colouring in,

reading books and a range of arts and crafts. This has helped the Child Studies students to put what they are learning in class into perspective. The students hope to continue this service next term to build their knowledge around the needs of a child and their development and learning how to run a crèche. Quoted from student Ashleigh: “I am loving it. I definitely think I am developing people skills and how to communicate with young kids and finding new ways to keep them entertained… It’s always good to be doing something different and getting a feel on what it’ll be like to work with kids when I’m older”.

CLONTARF CAMP On Wednesday 11 March, year 10, 11 and 12 Whyalla Clontarf members made the trip to Sceale Bay for their first surf camp. It was a huge thrill for senior academy members, with 2 surf lessons, a school clinic at Streaky Bay Area School and fishing kept the boys entertained. As it was a senior camp, the boys also sat down on Wednesday night to set goals for the upcoming school year. We were thoroughly impressed with the maturity and respect shown from the boys, with the Principal of Streaky Bay Area School explaining how important it was to make a good first impression, which the boys excelled at. A big thanks to Chris Roberts, the Principal at Streaky Bay Area School and Andy Joy, Surf Instructor extraordinaire, for their time and expertise.
