All Tomorrow’s PartiesMinehead, SomersetMay 7-9 and 14-16

Surely there is little with more allure than the chance to face off with Matt Groening from behind the wheel of a dodgem. that’s the veritable magic of AtP (May’s pair of weekends curated by the Simpsons creator and indie legends Pavement): the stars are housed, fed and entertained in Butlins just like the fans, as the holiday camp is given over to the festival spirit. Anything can happen- bands pulling off impromptu sets on the beach, a bus ride to the post office sitting next to Bon Iver’s frontman, or a rock star holding a Sunday morning knitting class (Kim Deal’s relatives won’t have felt the cold last Christmas).

All this and you get a bed, a roof and a shower whilst housed up in the chalets over the weekend, so dour weather can’t spoil the party and the musk of debauchery will be long gone by Monday’s trip home. (DW)

The Great EscapeBrightonMay 13-15

Of the three things Austin, tX is best known for - the lone Star, texan bohemia, and the SXSW music festival - Brighton can only really take a stab at recreating the latter convincingly. the Great escape takes place across a startling 30 venues, with the bold self-proclamation of being europe’s largest festival for emerging acts.

And touting 350+ bands on the roster already, this may well be true. Not much point in name dropping then, but rest assured there are some tantalising big names down there for those tired of scouting for new talent and would prefer the safety net of an established act.

In reality, it’s unlikely to be a super-sized industry showcase comparable

to the bloated SXSW, but with bands swinging from the rafters of plenty of Brighton’s venues, it’ll more than suffice for now. (DW)

Slam DunkLeeds/HertsfordshireMay 29-30

SPlIt BetWeeN the universities of leeds and hertfordshire, Slam Dunk brings a torrent of punk to both ends of england. In its second year, the festival has the unenviable task of focusing on a genre whose bands usually disseminate amongst the better known festivals.

It does seem to be picking up speed now though, with statesmen such as New found Glory, Capdown and rX Bandits on board to play. Joe Strummer will be looking down on this one from beyond the studded leather gates of punk heaven. (DW)

Evolution WeekenderNewcastle/Gateshead,May 30-31

WhAt Better way is there to fritter away the tail end of a bank holiday weekend than the cheap evolution festival in the North east? Since the main stages are based on edges of the tyne, hope for a balmy sunset. But if you have room in your bag amongst all the brown ale and peanuts for sustenance, pack a coat.

A fairly mainstream line-up (with impressive names, considering economical ticket prices) is peppered with some more quirky bands, including the literal onstage insanity of Dananananaykroyd. Good luck getting up to revise on tuesday morning. (DW)

Dot to DotBristol/Nottingham/ManchesterMay 29-31

WIth lAteSt inclusion of Manchester alongside Bristol and Nottingham, Dot to Dot festival now forms a well spread triumvirate.

As the name implies, the idea here is to jump between the myriad of venues in the host city (or for the keen journeymen, between the cities themselves) to catch bands of choice. for a day festival the roster is huge and packed with emerging talent, which means timeslots are swift and unabashed power walking is required to sneak in consecutive bands at distant sites. Shoppers must marvel at the reams of indie kids flocking back and forth.

the bigger names roll out in the evening and are gifted more time, but by then you’ll have settled to stake out the

last few acts, whether that’s for a caustic burst of los Campesinos!, the charm of ellie Goulding, or to blast the night away with Zane lowe. (DW)

Peter Hook of New Order and Joy Division will be playing solo and his former bandmates Bernard Sumner and Phil Cunningham will be performing with their new band Bad Lieutenant.

ParklifeManchesterJune 12

PaRKLIFE IS a new festival taking place in Manchester’s Platt Fields Park as part of its extensive centenary celebrations, and it’s aimed squarely at the student demographic. With six different stages, it’s impressively large for a new event and has managed to grab some big-name headliners.

The main stage will feature Calvin Harris, Friendly Fires and Booka Shade, but the real magic is happening elsewhere. The two dance stages will see sets from dubstep veterans Skream and Benga (performing both separately and together as Magnetic Man) as well as D’n’B pioneer Goldie, andy C, High Contrast, Sub Focus and DJ Hype.

The indie-inclined may want to take a look at the Now Wave stage, which will be showcasing new music from Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke (currently working on his solo album) and folktronica legend Four Tet, preceded by hyped bands Errors, Egyptian Hip Hop and We Have Band. This is shaping up to be a potentially excellent festival. (DB)

DownloadDonington ParkJune 11-13

SINCE 2003, Download has showcased some huge names in hard rock, punk, and metal, and every year they manage to grab bigger acts as headliners.

This year will see aC/DC, aerosmith, and Rage against The Machine topping the bill and is likely to be very special indeed – this year being the thirtieth anniversary of the Monsters of Rock festival which Download has essentially succeeded. Most of Friday’s acts have not yet been revealed so prepare for some surprises. Download is one of the biggest festivals the UK sees and on top of that is also one of the most fan-friendly – for each festival the organisers take and often implement suggestions from attendees. The festival is comparatively safe too; it is well staffed and has one of the best-equipped festival field hospitals around. a good choice for anyone into the harder end of the musical spectrum. Isle Of Wight festivalIsle of WightJune 11-13

IF yOU’RE willing to cross the Solent and be within stone-skimming distance of France, you’ll find a goliath of a line-up on the Isle of Wight. Having resurrected the ‘60’s Woodstock beater in 2002, the festival has steamrolled back on to the big stage. Plenty of questions can be asked of the stellar cast though. are the

Strokes still relevant? Can they build a stage big enough for

Jay-Z’s ego? Will this performance finally let Macca pay off that damned alimony?

If these arouse no curiosity, the immense depth of the roster means there is plenty of a-list talent to be found elsewhere. (DW)

Bands: Paul McCartney, Blondie, Florence + the Machine, Vampire Weekend

RockNessLoch NessJune 11-13

THERE’S SELDOM a more idyllic spot for a festival. However, don’t let the alluring scenery of rural Inverness lull you into a roaming in the twilight with dewy-eyed reverie; RockNess is as gruelling as festivals come.

Considering the somewhat biblical

showers that befall our friends in the very uppermost north, you’ll find you’re often at the mercy of the Gods where RockNess is concerned, but endurance is part of what festivals are about, right? RockNess has thus far enjoyed a modest attendance; however that looks set to change this year, with an early line up including The Strokes, Fatboy Slim and Vampire Weekend.

RockNess caters for fans of all musical genres, coupled with a site that’s small enough so you’ll not get lost too easily on those hazy nights. add to this the local penchant for pushing things a little further than you may be used to and you have yourself an extremely raucous weekend ahead. In its fifth year, RockNess benefits from being a festival that still has something to prove. (JH)

NOW IN its sixth year Wychwood Festival is now firmly established as one of the most eclectic events on the festival circuit.

Once again the event has secured some classic indie big-hitters to head up the proceedings. Friday sees grebbo, indie-folksters The Levellers, whist Saturday boasts Madchester hell-raisers The Happy Mondays and The Lightening Seeds. Sunday has a set from acclaimed folk-musician Seth Lakeman.

Elsewhere the remainder of the bill is typically eclectic taking in the brilliant 2-tone sounds of Pauline Black (from The Selecter), Dreadzone and their fusion of dance, dub and folk, King Creasote, critcally acclaimed group The Leisure Society, Goldheart assembly and The South (formerly the Beautiful South.) With loads more already on the bill (and to be

added) there is something to satisfy.a great comedy line-up also takes in some of

the best (and funniest) performers on the circuit including Robin Ince, Pete Johansson and Ray Peacock, and the numerous workshops and cinema offers much more than music.

Whilst not offering the names big on the student music scene, what Wychwood does offer is an eclectic and mind-expanding mix of world-wide sounds in a friendly, laid-back atmosphere – sounds good to us.

Barbara’s lead single ‘Rules Dont Stop’ harks back to the sound of popular second album With Love and Squalor

after a change in sound on last release Brain Thrust Mastery’

“I think it was something we set out to do before we even began to write.” Chris Cain conceded. “We felt after Brain Thrust Mastery we needed to get back to the stripped down sound of With Love and Squalor perform once again as a three piece.”

The sound isn’t the only alteration that the band has made since Brain Thrust Mastery. Changes have also been made in personnel. The impressive acquision of former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows arguably strengthens the band’s line up.

“Andy has been a friend of the band for about a year. We first met him generally as you meet other people in your trade. He is a super friendly, affable dude that one quickly becomes friends with. We had talked to him

before he left Razorlight about the possibility of drumming on a couple of tracks and at the time we had a number of different drummers to do one or two tracks for Barbara. But Andy left Razorlight and when we became aware of his availability to potentially do more we talked to him about it.”

“We were very excited to do a record together. He moved out to New York in the summer and it was great. It’s working out very well. He’s definitely the best drummer we have ever worked with in terms of his musicianship. The only downside is that he has a solo record coming out this summer as well which he is in the process of finishing up, and his availability for touring is going to vary a little bit. Unfortunately Andy will not be a traditional full member of the band for the time being. He will often be invisible, but we are going to include him as much as possible and were going to do the next record together as well.”

The band recently played their return gig in the UK, at London’s Hoxton Bar and Grill – a gig which sold out in the record time of three minutes and 25 seconds. Here, they got the opportunity to sample a live reaction to the new material.

“We played six or seven new ones. New songs are always a bit harder to sing along to because you’ve never heard them before, but people seemed pretty happy with it,” Cain told us, enthusiastically.

“We talked to everyone for one or two hours afterwards and there were one or two songs which they picked out, were very excited about and latched on to, which is very encouraging. I would say overall that it has come across live even better than our previous albums.”

The same weekend they were also in attendance at this year’s NME awards in London, where Cain told of his personal disappointment of how the night turned out.

“We were meant to be sitting next to Dwayne

“The Rock” Johnson but he didn’t show up. We were very excited at the possibility to meet The Rock. I’d say he owes me and Keith (Murray- lead singer) a rain check.”

W.A.S have announced a number of festival appearances over the course of the year, including Camden Crawl in London on Sunday May 2 and Reading and Leeds over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

“Our agent came to us with the offer to do one of the Camden Crawl shows. We are excited at the prospect to play in such a historic venue like London’s Roundhouse. There’s going to be some MTV involvement where it will be on TV so we are looking forward to have the opportunity to get the new songs out to some new people on a mainstream basis.”.

“We are going to be in the UK on and off throughout the next year. At this point there are no plans for a lengthy 25 date tour booked and we will probably not get to do anything

We Are Scientists are back! In the run-up to the release of their fourth album Barbara, bassist Chris Cain chatted to Robert Dalling about the new release, their future, and his own university experience.

WE ARE SCIENTISTS

Page 5: The National Student Magazine - April 2010

like that until the fall, as we have many festivals lined up, but we will be coming in and out at different points with single releases and occasional shows.”

The band have received a lot of success on UK soil, arguably more than they have in the US. Cain discussed his thoughts on why, as a New York based band this was.

“I think it’s less to do with the sound and more to do with the way things worked out. When I say that, I mean that we had more radio plays earlier in the UK - dating back to

2005. We got off the ground running, and in turn our touring was rewarded by more press on the radio, newspapers etc. The UK has always been our priority, and because of that we have never really had time to focus on the US, and at this point it’s never going to be our priority.”

Despite releasing some great material throughout the first three albums, We Are Scientists are yet to obtain that commercially successful song to grasp a wider mainstream audience, with their highest chart position obtained being at eleventh with song ‘After Hours’. Cain spoke of his hopes for a change of fortune with the new album.

“I think anybody who is out there in a pop band is interested to a degree about getting

as much exposure as possible. We certainly would be happy to increase our listenership. The second single that is going to be coming out called ‘Jack and Ginger’ is probably going to be our bid at that exposure. I think it stands a pretty good chance. Maybe ‘Rules Dont Stop’ may do it, but i think that is calculated to be more of an intro single for Barbara and then ‘Jack and Ginger‘will be one that will appeal to a broader audience.”

Cain continued his premonitions, explaining his hopes for the future.

“I’d say that this record will do a little better than the first two have. I like to imagine in terms of our presence as a band that we will be one day headlining festivals. Most importantly I’d see us making a few more records, continuing to make great music. Would we like to get to a position where we could call all the shots backstage front of the stage and everything? Yes we would. But I think we’ll stick to what we’re doing and hope to progress from here.”

As a band that met and formed whilst studying at Southern California University, I asked Cain upon closing to reflect on his own university experience, and pass on any advice to current students.

“I graduated in International Relations but I majored in babes. I’d advise students, however boring this may sound is to just enjoy the material, try not to focus on what is good for you but do something instead that will give you a buzz. In my experiences, even before the band took off I have never done anything specific as a result of my degree in college. I’ve always felt that the more important thing was that the experience really develops your mind. I’d say focus less on what you are majoring in and realise the fact that you have access to lecturers who know a lot, because once you leave it is much harder to gain insight into that kind of experience.”

SonisphereVarious countries/dates

In the era of dirt cheap air fares, there is little stopping the discerning metal-head from pursuing the Sonisphere brand deep onto the continent.

Between Scandinavia, the Alps, the eastern Bloc, the Balkans, the Med, and the gateway to the Middle-east, there are few corners of europe that will avoid the scorching noise of Sonisphere this summer.

Stretching from June way into August, it seems like the perfect time to add an extra stop to the InterRail itinerary, transforming any usual euro trip into a true metal Odyssey.

Last year Sonisphere set itself up as a top metal/rock event bringing together an array of exceptional line-ups.

this year they have done something truly historic bringing together the ‘big four’ of thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer (who play together for the first time ever at Warsaw, Switzerland, Prague, Sofia, Greece, Bucharest and Istanbul). (DW)

Primavera SoundBarcelona, SpainMay 27-29

the LIne-uP for this year’s Primavera is a music fans wet dream!

Focussing on providing the best independent acts as well as established and renowed acts from across the music spectrum – this festival has gained a reputation for quality line-ups and 2010 is no exception.

the list for this year reads like a who’s who of must-see bands – Pavement, Pixies, the Fall, Wire, Lee Scratch Perry, the Drums, Orbital, Monotonix, the XX, Yeasayer – the list goes on and on with each band impressive in their own way.

Spread across six stages at the Parc Del Forum site in Barcelona, the setting for the event is as impressive as the sounds.

there’s a definite reason this event has grown in both size and reputation. Put simply ‘check it out’!

Bands: Pixies, Pavement, Pet Shop Boys, Orbital, the Drums, Surfer Blood, Japandroids, the XX, Yeasayer, Diplo, Beach house, Atlas Sound

primaverasound.com BenicassimSpainJuly 15-18

In teRMS of continental festival action there is no doubt that Benicassim is one of the big boys.

One of the events major draws is the location. Set in the beautiful beach resort of Benicassim, the acts play at night, allowing festival-goers to relax on the beach or check out the other attractions the festival has to offer during the day without worrying about missing the bands they desire to see.

And as usual the event offers good array of top live acts including Kasabian, the Prodigy, Vampire Weekend, hot Chip, Ian Brown and Dizzee Rascal.

Adding to the list are Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, turntaballist DJ Shadow, ellie Goulding, 2-tone legends the Specials and John Lydon’s reformed post-punk mob Public Image Limited amongst the hundreds of acts performing during the event.

everyone we know who has been has raved about it – great weather, great bands and a great location seems to be the general concensus – three things we like at a festival!

Bands: Kasabian, Ian Brown, Vampire Weekend, hot Chip, DJ Shadow, ellie Goulding, the Specials, Dizzee Rascal

fiberfib.comSónarBarcelonaJune 17-19

WIthOut eVen considering a flight out to the Balearic Islands, fans of electronic music can take in both fine weather and their favourite big names at Barcelona’s Sónar festival. And relaying the enduring party spirit of the Spaniards, the festival is split into ‘By Day’ and

‘By night’ portions, ensuring events will occupy the majority of daylight, twilight and far beyond.

the relaxed daytime sessions are set in the city’s old town and feature lighter open-air performances, art shows and various other cultural festivities. When night falls, the proceedings are moved to a huge hangar skirting the city and the crowd pullers roll out. Watch out for fatigue and take a siesta: worst comes to worst, you could catch some sleep at a SonarCinema matinee showing to keep you going… (DW)

Bands: hot Chip, Air, 2manydjs, LCD Soundsystem

galicia.sonar.es/en/

Dessau, Germany, July 16-18

NeStleD iN amongst the mechanised giants of Germany’s past at the open air Ferropolis museum, Melt! appears a strangely austere setting for a festival.

But with crowds bathed in light shows hanging from cranes and girders, the site sits like a homage to how partying has most definitely persisted beyond industrialisation. the festival marries electronic and rock artists in a way only Krautrock progeny could manage, so

expect experimental button bashers like DJ Shadow, Pantha Du Prince and Four tet to be rubbing shoulders with more straight-laced acts like the Big Pink and the XX.

then there’s plenty of weirdness from new age pioneers like Yeasayer blurring the lines between the camps. (DW)

SzigetBudapest,August 9-16

With a week-long programme of over 1,000 bands and 400,000 attendees flocking to the titular island lying on Danube, Sziget is one of the world’s biggest festivals. it’s not hard to see why the hungarian event has ballooned: a massive international gathering, cheap beer, riverside camping, no wellies in sight, and the spas of Budapest a few minutes away.

to put the awe-inspiring scale of the festival in context; there will be more musicians performing at Sziget than there will be attendees at several other festivals featured in this preview. and because of the vastness, this is very much a festival for any music fan, irrespective of genres of choice, with headliners range from iron Maiden and Gorillaz to the Buena Vista Social Club. So yeah, kind of makes Glastonbury look like a stunted backwater get-together in comparison right? (DW)

it May have a name more fitting to a sail-boat than a music festival, but don’t let that put you off! Back for a third year Spirit of Burgas takes place on a beach on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and definitely a top musical beach party.

this year you can catch metal-legends Faith No More, who always put on an awesome show, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, punk legends the Stranglers and some top draw drum & bass with both LtJ Bukem and Sub Focus taking to the stage.

all in all over 100 acts will hit the beach, in the blazing august heat for the third installment of one of Europe’s hottest new beach festivals.

WheN iT comes to partying hard, few festivals party harder than Roskilde! As if four days of musical madness isn’t enough the Danes kick things off a whole four days earlier for the ‘partying and good times’ of the events ‘warm-up period’.

Once proceedings do kick off the festival offers hundreds of quality acts over seven stages. As usual carrying some serious big-hitters with the cartoon pop-phenomenon Gorillaz, nu-prog gods Muse and three-piece rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures as well as the likes Kasabian, indie-legends Pavement, Wild Beasts, The Temper Trap, Gallows, NOFX and Beach house the line-up does not disappoint.

With much more on offer, and still to be added to the bill Roskilde keeps up its reputation as one of the best continental music fests.

You should seriously consider checking out one of europe’s ultimate feel-good parties.

thErE’S a few things impressive about Exit festival. it boasts an incredible setting being hosted in a eighteenth century fortress by the river Danube in Serbia, where it will take over for the eleventh time.

also the fact that the event was originally started by three university students in 2000 has has grown to be the event it is today – an award-winning festival boasting an array of top-artists.

On the main-stage this years shindig has metal-legends Faith No More, the Chemical Brothers, LCD Soundsystem, Missy Elliot and DJ Shadow.

there really is something for everyone.

For the dance fans there’s Chromeo, Crookers and Josh Wink and the those who like the guitars played fast and loud Suicidal tendencies and Cathedral.

a performance by hardcore-legends Bad Brains makes this a must-have ticket for punk fans, and the main stages after-2am schedule highlights the festivals support for the best in drum and bass with DJ Zinc & Dynamite MC, DJ Friction & MC i.D, Breakage & Stamina MC, London Elektricity & MC Wrec and Foreign Beggars amongst the beat-smiths on show.
