Headteacher’s Report 2012/2013
I am delighted to report that the school year 2012-13 has been another successful one for Crickhowell High School
with excellent examination results and the school achieving Band One status in Wales. There is continued growth
and development across the school in so many key areas.
Our exam results at GCSE and at A-Level are outstanding with our L2 the best on record. We are particularly pleased
to see 94% of our students achieve the Level 2 Threshold with 77% achieving the L2 Threshold with English and
Maths and over 50% of grades awarded at A and A*. At A-Level 52% of all grades awarded were at A and A* and
99.8% of grades were A – E. Key Stage 3 saw the highest number of levels achieved by students in Year 9 at 5+, 6+
and 7+ and we continue to attract a wide number of students into every year group of the school from and
increasingly wide area.
We have continued to expand the range of subjects and vocational options available to students in order to ensure
the best learning pathway is available for every student whatever their talent, ability and needs. Our constant focus
is to meet changing needs, to continue to work together and to extend partnership opportunities ensure the highest
quality and provision in all areas of education and training. We have also this year further enhanced our ICT facilities
across the school to include wider opportunities for the use of technology to enhance learning.
Whilst we are delighted with these outstanding results the core business of our school ethos remains the wellbeing
of all in our community and the values which underpin every aspect of our work. We strive to provide a nurturing
and purposeful environment where every learner can flourish and develop as an individual. We are constantly
amazed by our students’ achievements and proud of their individual talents and success.
Every day the school is an exciting mixture of academic study, extra-curricular activities, sporting events, community
participation and a range of clubs far too numerous to mention here. Our newsletters and website reflect the rich
diversity of school life and I recommend you take the time to delve into them.
Our vision of continual improvement guides us on our journey and whilst financial constraints are a barrier we must
overcome we are optimistic we can exceed our targets for improvement and make Crickhowell High School even
better with each new academic year.
None of this would be possible without the commitment of students, staff, parents, governors, our cluster primary
schools and the wider community. I am extremely proud of and grateful for the dedicated team of professionals
who work at Crickhowell High School to ensure the ambitions and academic success of all our students will become a
reality. Equally I would like to thank all parents, guardians and carers for your wonderful support which makes
everything possible.
Yours sincerely
Jackie Parker

ALN Report 2012/2013
Fifteen pupils were subjects of Statements of Educational Need at 5th September 2012. The number of pupils
without statements, who were maintained on the SEN register, fluctuated but was 105 at 5th September 2012.
Therefore, at that date the total was 120 pupils. Two students with a statement of needs , both with a statutory
entitlement to TA support, stayed into the 6th form. This put an extra demand on the department as the School
were expected to find this support from core funding.
Thirty pupils were granted special arrangements when undertaking GCSE examinations. The concessions included
reader, scribe, use of word processor, practical assistant, extra time, prompter, supervised rest breaks and
transcriber. The duties of reader, scribe, practical assistant, prompter and transcriber were carried out by the
Teaching Assistants (TAs). Staffing levels within the Department were as follows:
Mrs Janice Morgan , Additional Learning Needs Manager, Mrs Sally Dawkins, SENCO, 1 part–time SpLD Teacher, 9
full-time and one part-time Teaching Assistants. We were also pleased to welcome Ms J Shipley who offered us two
days a week on a voluntary basis. Additional teaching support was provided by a specialist EAL (English as an
Additional Language) Teacher and a specialist Teacher for the Deaf.
Teaching staff delivered programmes of study in literacy and numeracy skills whilst TAs provided classroom support
for pupils in Years 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. We were involved in a Powys Transition Pilot scheme called Text Now to
improve the Reading ages of Year 6/7 Pupils. This involved a TA being trained then visiting the Primary school for
20minutes every day for 5 weeks to read with identified Pupils. Once the pupils joined us in Year 7 they continued
their 20 minutes per day for another 10 weeks. The pupils on this scheme improved their Reading Age, an average
of 6 months during this time. Several Teaching Assistants have undertaken the Catch-Up Reading programme and
deliver this to selected students during registration. They also manage a Homework Club each lunch time with
access to computers. One TA has taken on the role of Learning Coach offering her expertise to pupils in Upper school
offering help, guidance and mentoring. She also staffs a regular weekly drop in for pupils who are feeling stressed or
worried about their exams and offers advice on revision techniques. TAs and Sixth formers undertake Basic Skills
programmes in numeracy and literacy under the guidance of the Literacy Coordinator.
Staff development opportunities included courses/lectures on literacy and numeracy, Exam concessions and the
yearly refresher course in Manual Handling, safety issues and Epipen training. Five members of the department
attended a two day course on People handling in preparation for a wheelchair user who joined us in September
2013. All staff in the department were also involved in a Team Teach day offered by the Outreach Team at Penmaes.
The Department works very closely with the School Leadership Team, School Student Support Officer, Child
Protection Officers, Directors of Key Stages, SET Officer, Primary School Staff, Area Educational Psychologists (Powys
and Monmouthshire), ALN Governor, Occupational Therapists, Visual Impairment Service, SEN Careers Wales and
other relevant agencies, to ensure the needs of the children are met. The Penmaes Outreach programme is
available and we have been grateful for expert information and advice we have received in relation to a number of
our students.
Capitation for SEN amounted to £800.

Physical Education Report 2012/2013
The Department continues to provide a broad and balanced programme of activities for all students within
curriculum time and additionally we are able to support a number of extra-curricular activities and groups. We
continue to publish time and days of school practices in the School Newsletter and on the School Website in order to
ensure that parents are kept in touch with the range of activities available. One of our aims is always to provide
opportunities and links to the community, enabling students to achieve their full potential.
There are a large number of students who have represented South and Mid Wales, Powys, Wales and the school in
Athletics, Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Football, Badminton, Tennis, Swimming and Cricket. We continue to be
encouraged by the number of students who are committed to and consistently involved in sport. We play
representative fixtures against other schools in Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball, Badminton, Tennis, Cricket and
Athletics. We also enter all County tournaments and competitions. Two senior Netball Teams successfully competed
in the Brecon Evening Leagues. A number of our older students have become coaches and referees in a variety of
sports. In May our athletes did particularly well in the Powys Track and Field event. We have regularly entered
teams in the South Powys Cross Country Leagues with both individual and team success.
Our strong ties with the community continue to help with a number of sports. It has been encouraging to see the
development of the Girls Soccer and Girls Tennis in the community. As a school, we reap the benefits with more and
more girls being confident and able to compete alongside the boys in the school teams. The same can be said for
Rugby and Cricket with more girls being able to play and compete at a good standard. We have also benefited from
the services of the WRU Development Coach for Powys visiting school on a regular basis.
Skiing and snowboarding continues to form part of our extra-curricular provision. This year’s trip to Austria, saw 70
pupils involved. This is an extremely popular extra-curricular activity.
We are in the sixth year of the 5x60 programme running at Crickhowell High School which has proven to be very
popular, opening up many more activities for students such as rock climbing, horse riding, judo, basketball, dance,
canoeing, kick-boxing, golf and ballroom dancing, fencing, archery, dodgeball and zumba.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is now flourishing with 50 students completing various sections of the Bronze
level and numerous others working through Silver and Gold awards. One of our students subsequently completed
the Gold Award and has been presented with this at Buckingham Palace.
Finally, the Rock Challenge (a National Performing Arts competition) allows us to broaden our extra-curricular
provision. The immense amount of time and effort from the school and community, involved in our entry in the UK
Rock Challenge was appreciated by so many with around 70 participants. Our 2013 performance was entitled ‘Look
on the Bright Side’. This year the event was held in Eastbourne.

Teaching Standards, Curriculum Developments and General Matters
We continue to focus on improving the quality of teaching and learning, building upon our Estyn Report of 2012 and
its subsequent recommendations. Teaching and learning is our core business and the learner is at the heart of the
school. This links with our very strong Pastoral Care and an excellent PSE Programme as well as a rich extra-curricular
provision. Yearly improvements and targets are identified in our School Improvement Plan and monitored through
our Quality Assurance Calendar. This is supported by regular lesson observations and regular work scrutiny as well as
our School Effectiveness Framework which includes annual departmental reviews. This is also closely linked to our
programme of staff development and training.
The school’s curriculum policy has been developed in line with the Powys Curriculum Statement Document 2009 and
continues to develop through regular curriculum review involving all stakeholders as part of the Estyn 2012
recommendations. The purpose of Crickhowell High School is to educate all its pupils to the maximum of their
potential and this means offering a curriculum that is fit for this purpose. Our aim encapsulates the drive to
maintain and improve high standards and to develop a curriculum for lifelong learning. Our curriculum objectives
mirror those laid out in the Powys Curriculum Statement 2009:
1) To develop our students as successful and independent learners. 2) To develop our students as confident individuals. 3) To develop our students as responsible citizens.
Our curriculum is built on the following principles:
1) A focus on the learner and a learner profile 2) Emphasis on subject specific and cross curricular skills development. 3) A focus on continuity and progression 3-19. 4) Flexible individual learning pathways. 5) Relevance to the 21st Century and a national and global context. 6) Supporting Government Policy. 7) Meeting National Curriculum requirements. 8) Ensuring equal opportunities and ‘Entitlement for all’. 9) Continuity and links with the primary, further and higher education sectors. 10) Appropriate Assessment, Recording and Reporting of Attainment by students.
Attendance
Our overall attendance for 2012-2013 was 94.1%. The overall absence figure of 5.9% comprised 5.8% authorised
absence and 0.1% of unauthorised absence. These figures reflect students in Years 7-11 who are undertaking the
National Curriculum.

Management Issues
We have had 716 students on roll for 2012-2013.
Premises
Appropriate teaching resources and accommodation continues to be a major priority and in 2011 we installed
additional interactive whiteboards across the school, improved ICT systems and software, as well as upgrading B5
and improving the decoration in a number of offices and corridors. We have instigated a new decoration and
refurbishment plan to be phased over the next three years. Toilet facilities within the school are cleaned daily and
there is an annual programme for redecoration/refurbishment.
Toilets
The toilet facilities within the school are cleaned daily and there are discussions with the Authority on upgrading the
facilities in 2014.
Community Links
We benefit from close links with a variety of local organisations within our community and we are developing wider
community involvement. We work closely with Crickhowell Rotary Club, Dyfed Powys Police, our Cluster Primary
Schools, Curlew Performing Arts, Arts Alive, Powys Leisure, The CRIC Centre, Young Farmers Clubs, Coleg Powys,
Coleg Gwent and a number of local sports clubs and charities.
