PRINCIPAL REPORT
Dear Parents,
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
Once again the stall was a great success raising
$1192.40. Students had a wonderful time selecting from a
huge range of gifts. Thank you to all those families who
donated items and to everyone who came along to help on
the day. Not only did the children have fun but as you can
see by the photos so did the mums!

SMS INFORMATION UPDATE
Toolamba Primary School will be implementing a new
system that will use mobile phone Short Message Service
(SMS) to send text messages to notify parents/caregivers
of an emergency. We would appreciate if parents could
complete the attached form and return to school before
the 20th May 2016 so we can begin trialling the system.

STUDENTS ADVANCE TO THE STATE LEVEL
This week, three of our students competed in Regional
Events. We are extremely proud of their achievements.
Elsie Boyer and Maya Rutherford participated in the
Regional Trials in Benalla on Wednesday and were
successful in progressing through to try out for the State
Team Netball Team.
Brodie Wooster competed in the Regional Soccer Trials
and has also progressed through to the State Trials.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing begins on the 10th May. The National
Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
involves students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from all states and
territories in Australia and is overseen by each school.
If your child is in one of these years, the program will
assess their skills in four areas - reading, writing, language
conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and
numeracy.
These are the skills every child needs to help them
progress through school and succeed with future work and
study opportunities.
These national test results provide information on how
your child is progressing and performing in the key areas
of literacy and numeracy and also helps to support
improvements in teaching to benefit your child.
The assessments happen nationwide every year in the
second full week of May.
Tuesday 10th Language Conventions and
Writing
Wednesday 11th Reading
Thursday 12th Numeracy
NAPLAN tests provide very valuable information, but there
are no consequences for individual students for a poor or
good performance. At the classroom level it is one of a
number of important tools used by teachers to measure
student progress. To provide an overview of the format of
the tests, a full set of example tests is available.

very good spirits. It was lovely to catch up with him.

SENIOR NEWS
I had a wonderful time during my long service leave which
included a trip to Vietnam. It was good to get home though
and back into the swing of things. I would like to thank
Jess Thompson for teaching the Grade 5/6s while I was
away.
We have had a busy week this week with Cross Country,
the Mother’s Day Stall as well as school photos.
Next week we will conduct the NAPLAN tests for Grades 3
and 5. Please ensure your child is well rested and well-
nourished so that they have every opportunity to do their
best. The tests will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday.
On Tuesday, May 17th, the Grade 5/6s will be travelling to
Reedy Swamp in Shepparton for a day of environmental
and wildlife studies. A yellow permission note was sent
home this week. Please sign and return to me, with $6 for
the bus travel. Children will require a packed lunch
(rubbish free) for the day as well as a water bottle.
This term our Integrated Studies theme is called Curious
Creatures. We are studying minibeasts. So far the kids
have been researching the types of minibeasts and the
definitions. They have been working through a rubric
which provides them with choices of activities to guide
their own learning, in a variety of learning styles. They will
also have a project to complete this term and this can be
part of the homework routine.
Just a reminder that homework books are required back at
school on Fridays as well as reading log books. The white
word sort is to be cut out and pasted into homework
books, as well as written. Thank you for your support with
this.
The Secondary School Placement forms have been sent
home and are required back at school no later than Friday
13th May. The dates of open days and information nights
for secondary schools are on this newsletter. The schools
also have the dates and times on their respective
websites.
Can you believe that next week is week 5? That means
that over the next couple of weeks, we will be busy with
assessment, in preparation for report writing. During this
time, early bedtimes and sustainable breakfasts are
important for brain function
