How and where you work at heights affect your choice of equipment. There are mainly two different types of harnesses, with or

without belt. Below table explain what type of harness to use for fall protection, anchor line, support equipment, rope access and

rescue.

LOOPS

When manufacturing loops, the strap is

folded double to make snap-hook con-

nections as easy as possible.

D-RING AT THE BACK

Our D-rings are always fixed, ensuring the

D-ring cannot slide up and hit the neck in

a fall situation.

Enable the harness to be put on and taken

A new innovative Cresto premium harness for maximum comfort and universal use in tough

environments like for instance offshore. The design of the harness makes it suitable for most

workplaces where the user does not want to feel restricted. The harness is unique since it’s also

approved for support and positioning, without having a belt. The 1129 harness is equipped with

self-luminous attachment D-rings, for quick identification and rescue if light disappears.

This new harness is developed with and for professional industrial tower- and pole climbers. With

focus on details, ergonomics and comfort. This harness is perfect for demanding users that works

with support and carry a harness a full working day. In the same time, the harness is both robust

and light in weight. The Ergo-plus belt carry loops for tool bags and accessories. On the backside

of the belt the user will find good place to place a personal rescue device, like the “Smartline” (see

rescue equipment). 1136 replaces 1132.

leg variant, W2T. This solution provides for continuous connection when

transferring between anchorages. Both devices work independently and

A N C H O R A G E

WHAT IS AN ANCHORAGE POINT?

Fundamental for an anchorage point is that it should withstand a

static strength of 1200 kg during 3 minutes. This limit comes from

a European standard named EN 795. A fall protection system with

an anchorage point (A), full body harness (B) and a connecting

lanyard (C) should during a fall protect the user and limit body

impact forces to a maximum of 600 kg. In Europe, we have decid-

ed that double safety for the actual anchorage point is suitable.

An anchorage point can also be a part of the existing structure

and is then not required to be CE marked. It could for instance be

a steel beam or a tube. The user is then responsible to estimate

and decide that the specific point can handle up to 1200 kg, as

required from the standard. The user often has problem to find a

good attachment point for the connecting lanyard. Then a mobile

solution, like an anchorage sling, could be used as an intermedi-

ate and to connect the lanyard hook into. The beam and the sling

together creates an anchorage point. In our product range we

have several different types of mobile and permanent solutions

for different structure and surfaces.

Sometimes there could be a need to install a fixed system e.g. rail

or wire, then the system becomes the anchorage point.

Rail and wire can be mounted vertical and used as an anchorage

point. Here the user is connected directly to a special glider that

is tested and approved together with the wire and rail according

to the standard EN 353.

Horizontal systems can be mounted on for instance roofs, machin-

ery’s, cranes or other industrial environments. If these systems are

not meant to be removed they could be tested and CE marked

against other relevant EN standards and directive. The user is

connected to the system with the connecting lanyard.

COLLECTIVE FALL PROTECTION

Collective fall protection could be a fixed or portable installation. A

guardrail or a protective net are examples of solutions that are both

effective and safe. The barrier allows users to safely work without

the need of personal fall protection, risk analysis or a rescue plan.

Fixed systems can be mounted in various envi-

ronments where there is a fall risk. Always being

attached to the system allows work to be carried

out in a safe and secure manner.

VERTICAL SYSTEMS

Our rail and wire systems are suitable for installation in almost

any fall risk environment where work is frequent. We commonly

install rail or wire systems on existing ladders, walls and towers.

The worker is always attached directly to a sliding runner with an

integrated shock absorber.

HORIZONTAL SYSTEMS

Our horizontal rail and wire solutions can be mounted on nearly

any wall or roof. The user is attached directly to the system with

a connecting lanyard.

BENEFITS WITH THE VACUUM CONCEPT

The vacuum packaged bag guarantees that condensation water

cannot appear, as there is no air. Furthermore, it is impossible for

the rope or packaged components to wear down or rub against

each other as they lie still in the vacuum bag. Our experience

shows that inspection intervals are at least once every 10 years

thanks to the vacuum packaging. Additionally, an unopened

vacuum package is also both easy and quick to inspect in po-

sition, which gives the customer the chance to make significant

savings in connection with the annual inspection. As the vacuum

package is unique and patented, there is no comparable or

better solution on the market.

RESQ DD-X

ResQ DD is designed and used for the safe rescue and evacuation of

personnel in the event of an accident. By connecting a winch, axle and

brake drum directly to each other, ResQ DD (Direct Drive) is capable

of handling dynamic weight loads of up to 282 kg (3-4 persons) and

heights up to 600 meters. The innovative design of ResQ DD gives a

product that is robust, safe and easy to use.

Crestos patented vacuum packing secures simple and quick yearly

inspections as well as up to 10 years lifetime for unbroken packages.

PMX

POWER SUPPLY

PMX is the new four stroke engine ascender from ActSafe in

Sweden. This sturdy yet light-weight rope winch is the perfect

lifting solution for operations in very challenging environments.

With the PMX you can go both up and down the rope for me-

tres on end. The closed rope cover and the left hand operated

throttle add to the safe and easy handling of this versatile and

cost-efficient rope winch.

The ActSafe Power Supply adds a reliable and continuous

power source to the ActSafe Power Ascender. When operating

the Power Ascender from a fixed position you can now use the

Power Supply as your main power source. Plug in the Power

Supply, connect it to the Power Ascender, and start using your

system exactly the way you need it.

ACX is the new battery-powered ascender from ActSafe in

Sweden. This ultra-portable rope winch is the solution for op-

erations needing a fast, safe and light-weight lifting system.

The ACX weighs only 13 kg incl. battery and runs at a speed

of up to 25 m/min. The battery is easily managed with regards

to charging level and time. On top of that the ACX has IP 55

protection as well as a closed rope cover for better and safer

working. The bi-directional throttle situated on the left hand

side of the ascender adds to its easy handling and operation.

The standard EN365:2004 states that fall protection, support

equipment and evacuation equipment must be subjected to pe-

riodic inspections, at least every twelfth month. If the equipment

concerned is subjected to a lot of wear and tear it must be in-

spected more often.

A “Competent Person”, who should have been certified by a manu-

facturer or authorized partner, must carry out the yearly inspection.

Additionally each user is responsible for checking their equipment

prior to use - the so-called ‘daily inspection’.

We and our partners carry out periodical inspections both in our

service centre and on site with the customer. Many of our customers

have a service contract with us or our partners, covering regular

inspections and maintenance of the products. Customers with a

lot of equipment can also be trained by us, to become a certified

“Competent Person”.

We also recommend the use of our online inspection database

Inspector to register inspections simply and safely.

RFID/NFC

A RFID/NFC tag can be added to the product during inspection.

By doing so the next yearly inspection will be easier. A selected

range of Cresto products have integrated RFID/NFC tags already

from production. You can see which these are in this catalogue or

on Cresto’s website and/or the products’ ID sticker. The products

are marked with the following RFID icon.

The ABC of fall protection

A - ANCHORAGE POINT

The anchorage point for the connecting line has to be a safe

attachment able to take a load of at least 12 kN. Existing points

can, for example, be found in I-beams, scaffolding or other

fixed or structural points. These existing points may need to be

supplemented with a mobile anchorage point/anchorage sling.

• Permanent anchorage e.g. Fixed anchorage points, hori-

zontal wire systems, horizontal rail systems

• Mobile anchorage e.g. Anchorage slings made from

webbing and wire

B - FULL BODY HARNESS

Used to hold and, in the event of a fall, safely catch the user

before, during and after a fall.

• Full body harness must be used for all fall protection

situations

C - CONNECTING LINE

Used between the full harness and the anchorage point.

• Fall arrest lanyard: Max 2 meter, shock absorber

• Fall arrest block: With self-retractable line and inte-

grated shock absorber

• Anchor line: Fall protection, manual or automatic rope

grab with shock absorbing function

• Support lanyard: Only to be used as a restraint system.

(In environments where there is a fall risk, the support

lanyard must be used together with one of the above

connecting devices)

work on a stable base and when fall risk cannot be avoided.

Anchor line with manual rope lock (with or without shock absorb-

er). Requirements for safety distance to edge. Suitable method for

preventing the risk of exposure to falling.

Support equipment recommended for use in combination with fall

protection. Suitable for work where the supporting structure can

be slippery, unstable or on steeply sloping roofs where the hands

need to be available for work.

Rope work with working- and back-up rope with supplemental

components for rope adjustment. Suitable when the supporting

structure is not stable, dependable or is missing. Recommendation

is to follow one of the authorised methods such as Irata, Sprat or

Soft.

Method for being able to evacuate or move a person in distress to

a safe position to await medical personnel.

FALL FACTOR

PENDULUM EFFECT

The pendulum effect is one of our greatest risks when we use

personal fall protection equipment. In order to eliminate this risk

the anchorage point should be as directly above the user’s head

as possible. Alternatively as near as possible.

Fall factors (FF) is a term often used. We divide FF into the follow-

ing sections; FF 0, FF 1, FF 2. This means that the individual falls

the lanyard’s length 0, 1 or 2 times.

If the lanyard is connected at foot level you fall the length of the

lanyard x 2, or if you are connected to a taut lanyard above the

head you will not, in principle, fall at all.

For example, if you have a 2 meters fall arrester lanyard and FF

2 you fall a total of 4 meters plus your own body height and the

possible length of the fall arrester (Max 140 cm for Cresto´s fall

arrester); additionally the flexibility of the harness shall be taken

into consideration.

This implies that the choice of suitable equipment for low working

heights is of vital importance. And the choice of height for the

anchor point can be crucial for safe working.

Read the specific instructions for your particular lanyard.
