Dear C ol leagues,Welcome to the 2020 spring semester Professional Development Days activities. Each new year brings possibilities and TMCC has a wonderful range of activities planned to start the semester off on the right foot. Please join me and your colleagues for the Spring Semester Kickoff in the Student Center on Tuesday, Jan.14. Registration and coffee are from 8:30 – 9 a.m. followed by the kickoff event and lunch.

I look forward to sharing my TMCC Vision 2.0 in a talk titled ““Reflections and Responses in a High-Tech, High-Touch World.” I look forward to this campus input session for TMCC’s new and improved Strategic Master Plan (SMP) a table-top exercise that will generate ideas as the first in a three-phase process in the college’s Strategic Master Planning effort.

The Professional Development Office, with the input of the faculty members of the Center for Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee, have put together an excellent program for our faculty and staff. I thank them for their great efforts.

The Learning Café during our Roaring 20’s lunch on Jan. 14 will showcase teaching and learning techniques in short “speed learning” segments. During Professional Development Days you will hear from your colleagues on a variety of topics: Canvas technologies, social media, Open Educational Resources, undergraduate research opportunities, and how the college is managing waste and recycling. You also have an opportunity to hear from students about the positive impact of the Nevada Promise Scholarship on their lives.

I look forward to the new year and decade as we continue to do the exciting work of creating student success. Each of us contributes to this important mission and I am proud and appreciative of our efforts.

Happy New Year!

Dr. Karin M. Hilgersom, President

1:30 – 4:30 pm.ACUE Course Design Institute – Session OneSIER 204

This workshop is the first of two sessions this week for faculty who are registered in the 2019-2020 ACUE cohort. The purpose of this Course Design Institute is to give us a chance to rethink how we structure our courses, so we will learn about creating assessment opportunities, aligning our assignments with our outcomes, and building our tests with our final assessments in mind. On our second day, we will discuss the shapes of our syllabi, how to create transparent grading standards, and how to build rubrics and checklists that can work as tools to help us return work quickly and that also serve as devices that help our students learn. Come prepared to discuss the pros and cons of graphic syllabi, to consider how strong course learning outcomes are the foundation of a quality course, and to explore the ‘rules’ of our syllabi and why we have the policies that we do.Track: Teaching Strategies, Student EngagementDr. Martha Johnson-Olin, instructor, English, TMCC ACUE facilitator

When registering for this workshop on the January calendar prodev.tmcc.edu, you are also registering for session two on Thursday, January 23.
