A project is a temporary endeavour with a defined beginning and end undertaken to

meet unique goals and objectives, typically to bring about beneficial change or added

value.

Software project management is the art and science of planning and leading software

projects.

The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals.

The primary constraints are scope, time, quality and budget.

The secondary and more ambitious challenge is to

optimize the allocation of necessary inputs and integrate them to meet

pre-defined objectives

Traditional SDLC model:

One of the basic and traditional SDLC model is the WATERFALL MODEL.

The waterfall model is a sequential design process, often used

in software development , in which progress is seen as flowing steadily

downwards (like a waterfall).

There are different phases in this model which as shown in the figure.

Advantages of Waterfall Model:

It helps find problems earlier on

which can cost a business less than if

it was found later on.

Requirements will be set and these

wouldn't be changed.

As everything is documented a new

team member can easily understand

what's to be done

Implementers have to follow the

design accurately

Disadvantages of Waterfall Model:

If requirements may change the Waterfall model may not work.

Many believe it is impossible to make one stage of the projects life

cycle perfect.

Difficult to estimate time and cost for each stage of the development

process.

Changing Trends:

The SDLC models have evolved as new technology and new

research have addressed weaknesses of older models.

Ideas have been borrowed and adapted between the various

models

Launch of Samsung Note 3 and Apple Iphone 5S was almost done

simultaneously.

This is because none of these companies wanted to lose their market share.

The delay in launch of one machine may result into profit of the other

competitor company.

This shows that how project management can help an organization to reach

their goal.

Agile SDLC Model:

Agile SDLC model is a combination of iterative and incremental process

models with focus on process adaptability and customer satisfaction by

rapid delivery of working software product.

Agile model believes that every project needs to be handled differently and

the existing methods need to be tailored to best suit the project

requirements
