Text, Image and Electronic Art - Project 4Lucia Ulc, Hannah Purmort, Trent Segura, Rose Emmons, Noelle Logan1 May, 2012

For the final project our initial brainstorming inspired us to initiate a campaign, both online and offline, stemming from Isabel Nunez's absence due to illness. Inspired by origami, "an ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury." The project goal is to spread this well-wishing enough to eventually have one thousand cranes created and documented by us and those who we communicate our campaign to. The cranes will have individual messages and prayers, written by the creator, geared towards someone in poor health. Our group project contains several components that serve to initiate and further the campaign, including...

- Documentation of a "how to" tutorial for making the cranes, which is a series of step-by-step photographs uploaded to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and our project blog.

- The Instagram and Twitter component contains hash tags, one being #crane_tut which links to the tutorial photographs, and one being #1k_crane which is used to uniformly represent the entire campaign and will be used when posting photos of crafted cranes to Facebook and Twitter.

- Our project blog, located at http://www.tumblr.com/blog/cranes4isa contains all process and result information and photographs. It also links to Isabel's progress blog, Breast Cancer from Day One.

In regards to Project 4 being appropriate and filling the requirements for the class, Cranes 4 Isa fits appropriately within the rubric. It contains a TEXT element through the written messages on the cranes. It contains IMAGE, through the documentation with photographs. It contains an ELECTRONIC ART medium through the use of social media. As per Isa's teaching and artistic style, the project goes beyond being visually aesthetic art and has a substantial, more contemporary and social undertone.

The experimentation and research aspect involved competency in origami and skill to teach it, study of successful social networking campaigns, and ability to network and entice others to take time out of their lives to help with our project and cause. The desired result is, in a way, a dedication to Isabel Nunez and should act as evidence of a support system during her struggle. Given her appreciation for art as it relates to real-world issues, we feel it is the perfect subject matter for project 4. It should also have a positive effect on us and others involved, and should forge an understanding that taking time and documenting what may seem so minimal actually has a significant effect.

The final product, regarding the actual class project, is the documentation of our efforts through various social networking mediums. Cranes 4 Isa is also the beginning of an initiative, the goal of which may take months to reach. It's dependent on the willingness of others to involve art and communication for the greater good and awareness of those in struggle. As of now, we have harnessed several supporters who have contributed to our cause.
