Ace Tips on Bridge Cranes
Bridge cranes are custom built pieces of material handling equipment designed for a specific location and a particular overhead lifting job. A finished unit is made up of basic standardized components with the size, method of assembly, and characteristics chosen, yielding the desired result.
The basic components of most bridge cranes are 1) end trucks, 2) bridge drives, 3) bridge control panel, 4) bridge girder, 5) trolley, 6) hoist, 7) festooned cross conductors, 8) festooned push button conductors and 9) push button and cable assembly. Sometimes other components such as a catwalk, cab, radio control, collision control device, warning horn, lights, or other special accessories are added.
There are various types of bridge cranes with many being highly specialized, but the great majority of installations fallinto one of three categories: 1) top running single girder bridge cranes, 2) top running double girder bridge cranes, and 3) underruning single girder bridge cranes. Illustrations of the three types with major components labeled are as follows:

CAUTION: These tips are provided as a starting point in the selection process and are not universally applicable. Please consult our experts for the solution to your specific application problem.
Ace Industries manufactures all types of quality bridge cranes engineered to meet your specific application. To accomplish this result for you quickly and most economically, we stock complete proven selections of end trucks, drives, controls, hoists, trolleys, and other related equipment manufactured by the leading hoist and crane companies in the world. When presented with your exact requirement, our professional engineering staff, will custom design a bridge crane to meet your needs. There is no compromise with quality. Every component is chosen based on our vast experience to yield superior performance, reliability, durability, and economy (lowest total cost of ownership).
The component manufacturers we represent are recognized as some of the foremost and most reliable in the world. We stock and supply end trucks, hoists and trolleys by Shaw Box (LiftTech), CM, Yale, Coffing, R&M, Ace Engineering, and Stahl. Some crane builders attempt to cut costs by supplying only the hoist from a nationally recognized vendor and manufacturing their own end trucks and trolleys. This is usually done at the expense of quality and reliability. Certainly, at a later time, the crane owner is a captive market with limited options, when it comes to finding and purchasing repair parts for these locally manufactured components, if they are even available.
Ace not only manufactures bridge cranes, but we also provide and install complete systems consisting of engineering, runways, support columns, and all other related items to make sure that you have single source responsibility and a turn key job. Our world class engineering department insures you that these systems will reliably handle your application.
Call us whenever you have a need for a new bridge crane or any modification to an older one that you might already own. Modernization or modification of older cranes is one of our specialties. Our engineering staff and other specialists can save you money by refurbishing your older but still useful equipment.
Some basic dimensions and engineering data for our standard bridge cranes to 95’ span and 30 ton capacity are presented in the following pages These crane specifications are representative only and should not be relied on for accuracy in your application. Other bridge cranes for spans in excess of 100 feet and capacities in excess of 100 tons are available upon application. Please consult us regarding your bridge crane needs and we will provide a detailed quotation designed specifically for you. Our continuing challenge at Ace is to be the highest quality, lowest cost, best service supplier in the crane and hoist industry.

Ace Tips on Jib CranesThere are various types of jib cranes but the great majority of them fall into one of three categories:1) free standing jib cranes2) wall bracket jib cranes3) wall cantilever jib cranes
CAUTION: These tips are provided as a starting point in the selection process and are not universally applicable. Please consult our experts or the hoist manufacturer to find out the solution to your specific application or problem.
Ace Industries manufactures and distributes a full line of industrial jib cranes as shown above. We also supply fittings for those interested in making their own wall bracket and wall cantilever jibs. We have jibs and components by CM, LiftTech, Yale, Gorbel, Spanco and others. Like our other products, there are no compromises. Heavy duty bearings provide smooth operation and long life. Optional bottom or top entry collectors provide trouble free electrification for 360 degree rotation. Motorized models are available. Standard capacities to 5 ton. Spans to 20 feet with 20 feet under the boom.
We find that the foundation requirements for free standing jib cranes are often underestimated. Standard footing requirements are shown on the free standing jib dimension page.
The proper installation of a jib crane can easily exceed the cost of the equipment. A poor installation on the correct foundation or structure can cause problems. Difficulty in movement and undesired rotation after release can be dangerous to plant personnel. Have our expert technicians install your jibs to insure a satisfactory result.
Wall traveling jib cranes and other special applications are also available.
Hoists and trolleys of every type and capacity are available from our stock to complete your jib crane project. This assures you of one source responsibility.

* Do not deviate from “B” dimension. ** The “W” dimension indicates the S-beam to be used. If a cap channel needs to be stitch welded to the top of the S-beam, the letter “C” will follow the S-beam size. The last number indicates the size of the cap channel. *** The diagram to the right, details the thrust and pull forces that this jib crane applies to the supporting structure when a load is lifted. The chart above details in pounds the thrust at point A and the pull at point B. It is essential that a structurally adequate wall, column or truss exist to support the jib crane.Caution: Specifications and dimensions are for estimating purposes only. E Series Steel — Adjustable Height*
E Series Steel — Fixed Height*
SPANCO E Series Gantries are economical and rugged. The fixed height models conform to military specifications* and are sturdily constructed of high strength mechanical tubing with welded and bolted construction. Gantries roll easily on durable polyurethane wheels that will not mark floors. Wheel brakes, swivel locks, and other wheel and caster styles are optional
All gantries have standard American I-beam or wide flange beam. Gantries can be purchased without the beam for freight savings. Gantries with beams are shipped in three pieces for easy assembly. Higher capacities and adjustable height models are available.
* Standard fixed height steel Series E gantries meet MIL-G-29673 except for the use of lightweight, non-marking polyurethane wheels. Steel wheels available (option) to fully meet MIL-G-29673.

Ace Tips on Light Rail Cranes
The flexibility and ergonomic safety benefits of Light Rail crane systems have made them one of the fastest growing markets in the material handling industry. A system consists of a runway structure made up of light weight, pre-formed track, normally made into a C shape. The opening of the C is faced downward and the trolleys are made to run on the inside of the “C” with the wheels contacting the flanges of the rail on either side of the opening. The leading manufacturers, CM, Gorbel and Spanco advertise the advantages of their particular products based upon such things as ease of movement, stability, ease of erection, capacity, and cost.
Ace has been a leader in this field with hundreds of successful installations in place. We will help you select the correct equipment to suit your needs, and then supply whatever degree of installation help you might require.
Normal maximums are 2 ton capacity and 34 foot bridge span. Runway lengths are unlimited but bridge spans normally stop at 34 feet. These systems most often provide hoist service for machine tools and assembly work stations. They can be easily erected over machinery that is already in place, and later, they can be moved or repositioned if the need arises. An electric chain hoist suspended from a push trolley with a push bridge is the general rule. The beauty of this rail system is the ease of positioning by hand. The force required is much less than that required for a standard structural beam system and is usually well within ergonomic guidelines for repetitive sustainable work conditions. Most systems are free standing, but ceiling supported is also available.
Mixed capacity bridges can be provided for the same runway as long as loading is verified by engineering for the specific application involved.
Stick by the “minimum rule”. Keep capacities to a minimum, keep bridge lengths to a minimum, and keep maximum hook heights to a minimum. Besides extra cost considerations, the reason for this is to keep dead weight down, thereby enhancing positioning by hand. Maximum hook height should normally be kept at less than 14 feet for load positioning and control.
A 6” concrete floor is normally all that is required. One of our most popular systems requires no bracing of support columns to building steel and even meets California Seismic specifications. Ceiling mounted systems require a building with adequate overhead structure to suspend the crane.
These systems can be fully motorized but this is rarely necessary except in higher capacities, or when the worker cannot position the load due to the presence of an obstruction or hazard such as encountered over a machine, pit, or other inaccessible area.
Systems come complete with everything to complete most applications. Included are runway structure, runway rails, bridge, trolley, festoon electrification for the bridge and runway, hardware and anchor bolts. Standard color depends on the manufacturer. Bridges are normally yellow and runways blue or yellow.
Call Ace today for assistance in determining the correct light rail system complete with hoist and electrification. We will be glad to provide your choice of components only, or an installed, turn-key system. We recommend installation by our own experienced crews to insure you of the best quality, lowest cost, finished job.

Flat Cable C Track SystemsC track festoon systems are used for (1) powering runways and monorail crane systems, (2) cross conductors supplying power and control on bridge cranes, and (3) separate festooned pushbutton arrangement on bridge cranes and other applications where an independent pushbutton is desirable.
Most C track festoon systems use flat conductor cable for flexibility and compactness but they can be supplied with round cable when required. A representative C track system with standard components and flat cable is illustrated below. Please note that on festoon push button arrangements the Control Unit Trolley replaces the Tow Trolley. On other applications, there is no control unit trolley.
Standard duty C track is the norm and more than adequate for most applications however, it also comes in heavy duty. Standard duty is rated for trolley loads of less than 40 pounds and speeds of less than 250 fpm. These figures are far above those found in most applications.
Square bar and I beam festoon systems are readily available but are used infrequently. The various components for all of these other systems are similar in function to those of the C track system illustrated.

If only 10% additional is used (normally recommended for power festooning), the push button will spring back toward the center of the bridge if released by the operator. This can be an irritating and even dangerous occurrence.
